New King James Version | New International Version |
“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. | 1"Very truly I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate, but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber. |
But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. | 2The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. |
To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. | 3The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. |
And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. | 4When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. |
Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” | 5But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice." |
Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them. | 6Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them. |
Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. | 7Therefore Jesus said again, "Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. |
All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. | 8All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them. |
I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. | 9I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. |
The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. | 10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. |
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. | 11"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. |
But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. | 12The hired hand is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. |
The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. | 13The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. |
I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. | 14"I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me-- |
As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. | 15just as the Father knows me and I know the Father--and I lay down my life for the sheep. |
And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd. | 16I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. |
“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. | 17The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life--only to take it up again. |
No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.” | 18No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father." |
Therefore there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings. | 19The Jews who heard these words were again divided. |
And many of them said, “He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to Him?” | 20Many of them said, "He is demon-possessed and raving mad. Why listen to him?" |
Others said, “These are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” | 21But others said, "These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?" |
Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. | 22Then came the Festival of Dedication at Jerusalem. It was winter, |
And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon’s porch. | 23and Jesus was in the temple courts walking in Solomon's Colonnade. |
Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, “How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.” | 24The Jews who were there gathered around him, saying, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly." |
Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s name, they bear witness of Me. | 25Jesus answered, "I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father's name testify about me, |
But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. | 26but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. |
My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. | 27My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. |
And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. | 28I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. |
My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. | 29My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father's hand. |
I and My Father are one.” | 30I and the Father are one." |
Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. | 31Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him, |
Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?” | 32but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?" |
The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.” | 33"We are not stoning you for any good work," they replied, "but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God." |
Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods” ’? | 34Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I have said you are "gods"'? |
If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), | 35If he called them 'gods,' to whom the word of God came--and Scripture cannot be set aside-- |
do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? | 36what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am God's Son'? |
If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; | 37Do not believe me unless I do the works of my Father. |
but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him.” | 38But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father." |
Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand. | 39Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp. |
And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed. | 40Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. There he stayed, |
Then many came to Him and said, “John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.” | 41and many people came to him. They said, "Though John never performed a sign, all that John said about this man was true." |
And many believed in Him there. | 42And in that place many believed in Jesus. |
