New Living Translation | Berean Study Bible |
Lord, through all the generations you have been our home! | 1A prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, You have been our dwelling place through all generations. |
Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God. | 2Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God. |
You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals!” | 3You return man to dust, saying, “Return, O sons of mortals.” |
For you, a thousand years are as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours. | 4For in Your sight a thousand years are but a day that passes, or a watch of the night. |
You sweep people away like dreams that disappear. They are like grass that springs up in the morning. | 5You whisk them away in their sleep; they are like the new grass of the morning— |
In the morning it blooms and flourishes, but by evening it is dry and withered. | 6in the morning it springs up new, but by evening it fades and withers. |
We wither beneath your anger; we are overwhelmed by your fury. | 7For we are consumed by Your anger and terrified by Your wrath. |
You spread out our sins before you— our secret sins—and you see them all. | 8You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins in the light of Your presence. |
We live our lives beneath your wrath, ending our years with a groan. | 9For all our days decline in Your fury; we finish our years with a sigh. |
Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away. | 10The length of our days is seventy years—or eighty if we are strong—yet their pride is but labor and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. |
Who can comprehend the power of your anger? Your wrath is as awesome as the fear you deserve. | 11Who knows the power of Your anger? Your wrath matches the fear You are due. |
Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom. | 12So teach us to number our days, that we may present a heart of wisdom. |
O LORD, come back to us! How long will you delay? Take pity on your servants! | 13Return, O LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on Your servants. |
Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives. | 14Satisfy us in the morning with Your loving devotion, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. |
Give us gladness in proportion to our former misery! Replace the evil years with good. | 15Make us glad for as many days as You have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen evil. |
Let us, your servants, see you work again; let our children see your glory. | 16May Your work be shown to Your servants, and Your splendor to their children. |
And may the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful. Yes, make our efforts successful! | 17May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish for us the work of our hands—yes, establish the work of our hands! |
