Psalm 90
New Living TranslationEnglish Standard Version
Lord, through all the generations you have been our home!1Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations.
Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God.2Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals!”3You return man to dust and say, “Return, O children of man!”
For you, a thousand years are as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours.4For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.
You sweep people away like dreams that disappear. They are like grass that springs up in the morning.5You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning:
In the morning it blooms and flourishes, but by evening it is dry and withered.6in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers.
We wither beneath your anger; we are overwhelmed by your fury.7For we are brought to an end by your anger; by your wrath we are dismayed.
You spread out our sins before you— our secret sins—and you see them all.8You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence.
We live our lives beneath your wrath, ending our years with a groan.9For all our days pass away under your wrath; we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away.10The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.
Who can comprehend the power of your anger? Your wrath is as awesome as the fear you deserve.11Who considers the power of your anger, and your wrath according to the fear of you?
Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.12So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.
O LORD, come back to us! How long will you delay? Take pity on your servants!13Return, O LORD! How long? Have pity on your servants!
Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives.14Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
Give us gladness in proportion to our former misery! Replace the evil years with good.15Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil.
Let us, your servants, see you work again; let our children see your glory.16Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children.
And may the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful. Yes, make our efforts successful!17Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!
