New Living Translation | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
Lord, through all the generations you have been our home! | 1A prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, You have been our refuge in every generation. |
Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God. | 2Before the mountains were born, before You gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity to eternity, You are God. |
You turn people back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, you mortals!” | 3You return mankind to the dust, saying, "Return, descendants of Adam." |
For you, a thousand years are as a passing day, as brief as a few night hours. | 4For in Your sight a thousand years are like yesterday that passes by, like a few hours of the night. |
You sweep people away like dreams that disappear. They are like grass that springs up in the morning. | 5You end their lives; they sleep. They are like grass that grows in the morning-- |
In the morning it blooms and flourishes, but by evening it is dry and withered. | 6in the morning it sprouts and grows; by evening it withers and dries up. |
We wither beneath your anger; we are overwhelmed by your fury. | 7For we are consumed by Your anger; we are terrified by Your wrath. |
You spread out our sins before you— our secret sins—and you see them all. | 8You have set our unjust ways before You, our secret sins in the light of Your presence. |
We live our lives beneath your wrath, ending our years with a groan. | 9For all our days ebb away under Your wrath; we end our years like a sigh. |
Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away. | 10Our lives last seventy years or, if we are strong, eighty years. Even the best of them are struggle and sorrow; indeed, they pass quickly and we fly away. |
Who can comprehend the power of your anger? Your wrath is as awesome as the fear you deserve. | 11Who understands the power of Your anger? Your wrath matches the fear that is due You. |
Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom. | 12Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts. |
O LORD, come back to us! How long will you delay? Take pity on your servants! | 13 LORD--how long? Turn and have compassion on Your servants. |
Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives. | 14Satisfy us in the morning with Your faithful love so that we may shout with joy and be glad all our days. |
Give us gladness in proportion to our former misery! Replace the evil years with good. | 15Make us rejoice for as many days as You have humbled us, for as many years as we have seen adversity. |
Let us, your servants, see you work again; let our children see your glory. | 16Let Your work be seen by Your servants, and Your splendor by their children. |
And may the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful. Yes, make our efforts successful! | 17Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish for us the work of our hands-- establish the work of our hands! |
