New Living TranslationEnglish Standard Version
On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place.1When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.
Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.2And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.3And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.4And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem.5Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.
When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.6And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.
They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee,7And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages!8And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language?
Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia,9Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome,
(both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!”11both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.”
They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this mean?” they asked each other.12And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”
But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying, “They’re just drunk, that’s all!” Peter Preaches to the Crowd13But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”
Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this.14But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words.
These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that.15For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.
No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:16But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:
‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.17“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;
In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike— and they will prophesy.18even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below— blood and fire and clouds of smoke.19And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and glorious day of the LORD arrives.20the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
But everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.’21And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’
“People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know.22“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—
But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him.23this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip.24God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
King David said this about him: ‘I see that the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.25For David says concerning him, “‘I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
No wonder my heart is glad, and my tongue shouts his praises! My body rests in hope.26therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also will dwell in hope.
For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.27For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One see corruption.
You have shown me the way of life, and you will fill me with the joy of your presence.’28You have made known to me the paths of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’
“Dear brothers, think about this! You can be sure that the patriarch David wasn’t referring to himself, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still here among us.29“Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne.30Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne,
David was looking into the future and speaking of the Messiah’s resurrection. He was saying that God would not leave him among the dead or allow his body to rot in the grave.31he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption.
“God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this.32This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.
Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today.33Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said, ‘The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit in the place of honor at my right hand34For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, “‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand,
until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.”’35until I make your enemies your footstool.”’
“So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!”36Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”37Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.38And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away —all who have been called by the Lord our God.”39For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!”40And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.”
Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all. The Believers Form a Community41So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper ), and to prayer.42And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.
A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.43And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.
And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had.44And all who believed were together and had all things in common.
They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.45And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity —46And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,
all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.47praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
