On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place.1Καὶ ἐν τῷ συμπληροῦσθαι τὴν ἡμέραν τῆς Πεντηκοστῆς ἦσαν πάντες ὁμοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό
Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.2καὶ ἐγένετο ἄφνω ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἦχος ὥσπερ φερομένης πνοῆς βιαίας καὶ ἐπλήρωσεν ὅλον τὸν οἶκον οὗ ἦσαν καθήμενοι
Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.3καὶ ὤφθησαν αὐτοῖς διαμεριζόμεναι γλῶσσαι ὡσεὶ πυρός καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐφ’ ἕνα ἕκαστον αὐτῶν
And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.4καὶ ἐπλήσθησαν πάντες Πνεύματος Ἁγίου καὶ ἤρξαντο λαλεῖν ἑτέραις γλώσσαις καθὼς τὸ Πνεῦμα ἐδίδου ἀποφθέγγεσθαι αὐτοῖς
At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem.5Ἦσαν δὲ εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ κατοικοῦντες Ἰουδαῖοι ἄνδρες εὐλαβεῖς ἀπὸ παντὸς ἔθνους τῶν ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανόν
When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.6γενομένης δὲ τῆς φωνῆς ταύτης συνῆλθεν τὸ πλῆθος καὶ συνεχύθη ὅτι ἤκουον εἷς ἕκαστος τῇ ἰδίᾳ διαλέκτῳ λαλούντων αὐτῶν
They were completely amazed. “How can this be?” they exclaimed. “These people are all from Galilee,7Ἐξίσταντο δὲ καὶ ἐθαύμαζον λέγοντες Οὐχ* ἰδοὺ πάντες οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ λαλοῦντες Γαλιλαῖοι
and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages!8καὶ πῶς ἡμεῖς ἀκούομεν ἕκαστος τῇ ἰδίᾳ διαλέκτῳ ἡμῶν ἐν ἐγεννήθημεν
Here we are—Parthians, Medes, Elamites, people from Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus, the province of Asia,9Πάρθοι καὶ Μῆδοι καὶ Ἐλαμῖται* καὶ οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν Μεσοποταμίαν Ἰουδαίαν τε καὶ Καππαδοκίαν Πόντον καὶ τὴν Ἀσίαν
Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, and the areas of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome10Φρυγίαν τε καὶ Παμφυλίαν Αἴγυπτον καὶ τὰ μέρη τῆς Λιβύης τῆς κατὰ Κυρήνην καὶ οἱ ἐπιδημοῦντες Ῥωμαῖοι
(both Jews and converts to Judaism), Cretans, and Arabs. And we all hear these people speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done!”11Ἰουδαῖοί τε καὶ προσήλυτοι Κρῆτες καὶ Ἄραβες ἀκούομεν λαλούντων αὐτῶν ταῖς ἡμετέραις γλώσσαις τὰ μεγαλεῖα τοῦ Θεοῦ
They stood there amazed and perplexed. “What can this mean?” they asked each other.12Ἐξίσταντο δὲ πάντες καὶ διηπόρουν* ἄλλος πρὸς ἄλλον λέγοντες Τί θέλει τοῦτο εἶναι
But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying, “They’re just drunk, that’s all!” Peter Preaches to the Crowd13Ἕτεροι δὲ διαχλευάζοντες ἔλεγον ὅτι Γλεύκους μεμεστωμένοι εἰσίν
Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, “Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this.14Σταθεὶς δὲ Πέτρος σὺν τοῖς ἕνδεκα ἐπῆρεν τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπεφθέγξατο αὐτοῖς Ἄνδρες Ἰουδαῖοι καὶ οἱ κατοικοῦντες Ἰερουσαλὴμ πάντες τοῦτο ὑμῖν γνωστὸν ἔστω καὶ ἐνωτίσασθε τὰ ῥήματά μου
These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o’clock in the morning is much too early for that.15οὐ γὰρ ὡς ὑμεῖς ὑπολαμβάνετε οὗτοι μεθύουσιν ἔστιν γὰρ ὥρα τρίτη τῆς ἡμέρας
No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:16ἀλλὰ τοῦτό ἐστιν τὸ εἰρημένον διὰ τοῦ προφήτου Ἰωήλ
‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.17Καὶ ἔσται ἐν ταῖς ἐσχάταις ἡμέραις λέγει Θεός ἐκχεῶ ἀπὸ τοῦ Πνεύματός μου ἐπὶ πᾶσαν σάρκα καὶ προφητεύσουσιν οἱ υἱοὶ ὑμῶν καὶ αἱ θυγατέρες ὑμῶν καὶ οἱ νεανίσκοι ὑμῶν ὁράσεις ὄψονται καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι ὑμῶν ἐνυπνίοις ἐνυπνιασθήσονται
In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on my servants—men and women alike— and they will prophesy.18καί‿ γε ἐπὶ τοὺς δούλους μου καὶ ἐπὶ τὰς δούλας μου ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις ἐκχεῶ ἀπὸ τοῦ Πνεύματός μου καὶ προφητεύσουσιν
And I will cause wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below— blood and fire and clouds of smoke.19καὶ δώσω τέρατα ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ἄνω καὶ σημεῖα ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς κάτω αἷμα καὶ πῦρ καὶ ἀτμίδα καπνοῦ
The sun will become dark, and the moon will turn blood red before that great and glorious day of the LORD arrives.20 ἥλιος μεταστραφήσεται εἰς σκότος καὶ σελήνη εἰς αἷμα πρὶν ‹ἢ› ἐλθεῖν ἡμέραν Κυρίου τὴν μεγάλην καὶ ἐπιφανῆ
But everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.’21καὶ ἔσται πᾶς ὃς ἐὰν ἐπικαλέσηται τὸ ὄνομα Κυρίου σωθήσεται
“People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know.22Ἄνδρες Ἰσραηλῖται ἀκούσατε τοὺς λόγους τούτους Ἰησοῦν τὸν Ναζωραῖον ἄνδρα ἀποδεδειγμένον ἀπὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς ὑμᾶς δυνάμεσι καὶ τέρασι καὶ σημείοις οἷς ἐποίησεν δι’ αὐτοῦ Θεὸς ἐν μέσῳ ὑμῶν καθὼς αὐτοὶ οἴδατε
But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him.23τοῦτον τῇ ὡρισμένῃ βουλῇ καὶ προγνώσει τοῦ Θεοῦ ἔκδοτον διὰ χειρὸς ἀνόμων προσπήξαντες ἀνείλατε
But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip.24ὃν Θεὸς ἀνέστησεν λύσας τὰς ὠδῖνας τοῦ θανάτου καθότι οὐκ ἦν δυνατὸν κρατεῖσθαι αὐτὸν ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ
King David said this about him: ‘I see that the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.25Δαυὶδ γὰρ λέγει εἰς αὐτόν Προορώμην τὸν Κύριον ἐνώπιόν μου διὰ παντός ὅτι ἐκ δεξιῶν μού ἐστιν ἵνα μὴ σαλευθῶ
No wonder my heart is glad, and my tongue shouts his praises! My body rests in hope.26διὰ τοῦτο ηὐφράνθη μου «ἡ καρδία» καὶ ἠγαλλιάσατο γλῶσσά μου ἔτι δὲ καὶ σάρξ μου κατασκηνώσει ἐπ’ ἐλπίδι
For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.27ὅτι οὐκ ἐνκαταλείψεις τὴν ψυχήν μου εἰς ᾅδην οὐδὲ δώσεις τὸν Ὅσιόν σου ἰδεῖν διαφθοράν
You have shown me the way of life, and you will fill me with the joy of your presence.’28ἐγνώρισάς μοι ὁδοὺς ζωῆς πληρώσεις με εὐφροσύνης μετὰ τοῦ προσώπου σου
“Dear brothers, think about this! You can be sure that the patriarch David wasn’t referring to himself, for he died and was buried, and his tomb is still here among us.29Ἄνδρες ἀδελφοί ἐξὸν εἰπεῖν μετὰ παρρησίας πρὸς ὑμᾶς περὶ τοῦ πατριάρχου Δαυὶδ ὅτι καὶ ἐτελεύτησεν καὶ ἐτάφη καὶ τὸ μνῆμα αὐτοῦ ἔστιν ἐν ἡμῖν ἄχρι τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης
But he was a prophet, and he knew God had promised with an oath that one of David’s own descendants would sit on his throne.30προφήτης οὖν ὑπάρχων καὶ εἰδὼς ὅτι ὅρκῳ ὤμοσεν αὐτῷ Θεὸς ἐκ καρποῦ τῆς ὀσφύος αὐτοῦ καθίσαι ἐπὶ τὸν θρόνον αὐτοῦ
David was looking into the future and speaking of the Messiah’s resurrection. He was saying that God would not leave him among the dead or allow his body to rot in the grave.31προϊδὼν ἐλάλησεν περὶ τῆς ἀναστάσεως τοῦ Χριστοῦ ὅτι οὔτε ἐνκατελείφθη εἰς ᾅδην οὔτε σὰρξ αὐτοῦ εἶδεν διαφθοράν
“God raised Jesus from the dead, and we are all witnesses of this.32Τοῦτον τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀνέστησεν Θεός οὗ πάντες ἡμεῖς ἐσμεν μάρτυρες
Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God’s right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave him the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see and hear today.33τῇ δεξιᾷ οὖν τοῦ Θεοῦ ὑψωθεὶς τήν τε ἐπαγγελίαν τοῦ Πνεύματος τοῦ Ἁγίου λαβὼν παρὰ τοῦ Πατρὸς ἐξέχεεν τοῦτο ὑμεῖς καὶ βλέπετε καὶ ἀκούετε
For David himself never ascended into heaven, yet he said, ‘The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit in the place of honor at my right hand34Οὐ γὰρ Δαυὶδ ἀνέβη εἰς τοὺς οὐρανούς λέγει δὲ αὐτός Εἶπεν ‹ὁ› Κύριος τῷ Κυρίῳ μου Κάθου ἐκ δεξιῶν μου
until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet.”’35ἕως ἂν θῶ τοὺς ἐχθρούς σου ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν σου
“So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!”36Ἀσφαλῶς οὖν γινωσκέτω πᾶς οἶκος Ἰσραὴλ ὅτι καὶ Κύριον αὐτὸν καὶ Χριστὸν ἐποίησεν Θεός τοῦτον τὸν Ἰησοῦν ὃν ὑμεῖς ἐσταυρώσατε
Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?”37Ἀκούσαντες δὲ κατενύγησαν τὴν καρδίαν εἶπόν τε πρὸς τὸν Πέτρον καὶ τοὺς λοιποὺς ἀποστόλους Τί ποιήσωμεν ἄνδρες ἀδελφοί
Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.38Πέτρος δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς Μετανοήσατε [φησίν] Καὶ βαπτισθήτω ἕκαστος ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς ἄφεσιν τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ὑμῶν καὶ λήμψεσθε τὴν δωρεὰν τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος
This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away —all who have been called by the Lord our God.”39ὑμῖν γάρ ἐστιν ἐπαγγελία καὶ τοῖς τέκνοις ὑμῶν καὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς εἰς μακρὰν ὅσους ἂν προσκαλέσηται Κύριος Θεὸς ἡμῶν
Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!”40Ἑτέροις τε λόγοις πλείοσιν διεμαρτύρατο καὶ παρεκάλει αὐτοὺς λέγων Σώθητε ἀπὸ τῆς γενεᾶς τῆς σκολιᾶς ταύτης
Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.
All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper ), and to prayer.42Ἦσαν δὲ προσκαρτεροῦντες τῇ διδαχῇ τῶν ἀποστόλων καὶ τῇ κοινωνίᾳ τῇ κλάσει τοῦ ἄρτου καὶ ταῖς προσευχαῖς
A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders.43Ἐγίνετο δὲ πάσῃ ψυχῇ φόβος πολλά τε* τέρατα καὶ σημεῖα διὰ τῶν ἀποστόλων ἐγίνετο
And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had.44Πάντες δὲ οἱ ‹πιστεύοντες ἦσαν› ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ‹καὶ› εἶχον ἅπαντα κοινά
They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need.45καὶ τὰ κτήματα καὶ τὰς ὑπάρξεις ἐπίπρασκον καὶ διεμέριζον αὐτὰ πᾶσιν καθότι ἄν τις χρείαν εἶχεν
They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity —46Καθ’ ἡμέραν τε προσκαρτεροῦντες ὁμοθυμαδὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ κλῶντές τε κατ’ οἶκον ἄρτον μετελάμβανον τροφῆς ἐν ἀγαλλιάσει καὶ ἀφελότητι καρδίας
all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.47αἰνοῦντες τὸν Θεὸν καὶ ἔχοντες χάριν πρὸς ὅλον τὸν λαόν δὲ Κύριος προσετίθει τοὺς σῳζομένους καθ’ ἡμέραν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό
