| 1Jesus entered Jericho and made his way through the town. | 1He entered Jericho and was passing through. |
| 2There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich. | 2And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. |
| 3He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. | 3And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. |
| 4So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way. | 4So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way. |
| 5When Jesus came by, he looked up at Zacchaeus and called him by name. “Zacchaeus!” he said. “Quick, come down! I must be a guest in your home today.” | 5And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” |
| 6Zacchaeus quickly climbed down and took Jesus to his house in great excitement and joy. | 6So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully. |
| 7But the people were displeased. “He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner,” they grumbled. | 7And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.” |
| 8Meanwhile, Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, “I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!” | 8And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.” |
| 9Jesus responded, “Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. | 9And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. |
| 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and save those who are lost.” Parable of the Ten Servants | 10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” |
| 11The crowd was listening to everything Jesus said. And because he was nearing Jerusalem, he told them a story to correct the impression that the Kingdom of God would begin right away. | 11As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately. |
| 12He said, “A nobleman was called away to a distant empire to be crowned king and then return. | 12He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. |
| 13 Before he left, he called together ten of his servants and divided among them ten pounds of silver, saying, ‘Invest this for me while I am gone.’ | 13Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’ |
| 14 But his people hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want him to be our king.’ | 14But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ |
| 15 “After he was crowned king, he returned and called in the servants to whom he had given the money. He wanted to find out what their profits were. | 15When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. |
| 16 The first servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made ten times the original amount!’ | 16The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’ |
| 17 “‘Well done!’ the king exclaimed. ‘You are a good servant. You have been faithful with the little I entrusted to you, so you will be governor of ten cities as your reward.’ | 17And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’ |
| 18 “The next servant reported, ‘Master, I invested your money and made five times the original amount.’ | 18And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’ |
| 19 “‘Well done!’ the king said. ‘You will be governor over five cities.’ | 19And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ |
| 20 “But the third servant brought back only the original amount of money and said, ‘Master, I hid your money and kept it safe. | 20Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; |
| 21 I was afraid because you are a hard man to deal with, taking what isn’t yours and harvesting crops you didn’t plant.’ | 21for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ |
| 22 “‘You wicked servant!’ the king roared. ‘Your own words condemn you. If you knew that I’m a hard man who takes what isn’t mine and harvests crops I didn’t plant, | 22He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? |
| 23 why didn’t you deposit my money in the bank? At least I could have gotten some interest on it.’ | 23Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ |
| 24 “Then, turning to the others standing nearby, the king ordered, ‘Take the money from this servant, and give it to the one who has ten pounds.’ | 24And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ |
| 25 “‘But, master,’ they said, ‘he already has ten pounds!’ | 25And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ |
| 26 “‘Yes,’ the king replied, ‘and to those who use well what they are given, even more will be given. But from those who do nothing, even what little they have will be taken away. | 26‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. |
| 27 And as for these enemies of mine who didn’t want me to be their king—bring them in and execute them right here in front of me.’” Jesus’ Triumphant Entry | 27But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’” |
| 28After telling this story, Jesus went on toward Jerusalem, walking ahead of his disciples. | 28And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. |
| 29As he came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany on the Mount of Olives, he sent two disciples ahead. | 29When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, |
| 30 “Go into that village over there,” he told them. “As you enter it, you will see a young donkey tied there that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. | 30saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. |
| 31 If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying that colt?’ just say, ‘The Lord needs it.’” | 31If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” |
| 32So they went and found the colt, just as Jesus had said. | 32So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. |
| 33And sure enough, as they were untying it, the owners asked them, “Why are you untying that colt?” | 33And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” |
| 34And the disciples simply replied, “The Lord needs it.” | 34And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” |
| 35So they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it for him to ride on. | 35And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. |
| 36As he rode along, the crowds spread out their garments on the road ahead of him. | 36And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. |
| 37When he reached the place where the road started down the Mount of Olives, all of his followers began to shout and sing as they walked along, praising God for all the wonderful miracles they had seen. | 37As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, |
| 38“Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the LORD! Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!” | 38saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” |
| 39But some of the Pharisees among the crowd said, “Teacher, rebuke your followers for saying things like that!” | 39And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” |
| 40He replied, “If they kept quiet, the stones along the road would burst into cheers!” Jesus Weeps over Jerusalem | 40He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.” |
| 41But as he came closer to Jerusalem and saw the city ahead, he began to weep. | 41And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, |
| 42 “How I wish today that you of all people would understand the way to peace. But now it is too late, and peace is hidden from your eyes. | 42saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. |
| 43 Before long your enemies will build ramparts against your walls and encircle you and close in on you from every side. | 43For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side |
| 44 They will crush you into the ground, and your children with you. Your enemies will not leave a single stone in place, because you did not recognize it when God visited you. ” Jesus Clears the Temple | 44and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” |
| 45Then Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the people selling animals for sacrifices. | 45And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, |
| 46He said to them, “The Scriptures declare, ‘My Temple will be a house of prayer,’ but you have turned it into a den of thieves.” | 46saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.” |
| 47After that, he taught daily in the Temple, but the leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the other leaders of the people began planning how to kill him. | 47And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, |
| 48But they could think of nothing, because all the people hung on every word he said. | 48but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words. |
