 | 1Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. | 1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! |
| 2Has the LORD redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies. | 2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble |
| 3For he has gathered the exiles from many lands, from east and west, from north and south. | 3and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. |
| 4Some wandered in the wilderness, lost and homeless. | 4Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; |
| 5Hungry and thirsty, they nearly died. | 5hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. |
| 6“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he rescued them from their distress. | 6Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
| 7He led them straight to safety, to a city where they could live. | 7He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. |
| 8Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 8Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! |
| 9For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. | 9For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. |
| 10Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery. | 10Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons, |
| 11They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High. | 11for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. |
| 12That is why he broke them with hard labor; they fell, and no one was there to help them. | 12So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help. |
| 13“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 13Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
| 14He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; he snapped their chains. | 14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart. |
| 15Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 15Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! |
| 16For he broke down their prison gates of bronze; he cut apart their bars of iron. | 16For he shatters the doors of bronze and cuts in two the bars of iron. |
| 17Some were fools; they rebelled and suffered for their sins. | 17Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction; |
| 18They couldn’t stand the thought of food, and they were knocking on death’s door. | 18they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. |
| 19“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 19Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
| 20He sent out his word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death. | 20He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. |
| 21Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 21Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! |
| 22Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and sing joyfully about his glorious acts. | 22And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and tell of his deeds in songs of joy! |
| 23Some went off to sea in ships, plying the trade routes of the world. | 23Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters; |
| 24They, too, observed the LORD’s power in action, his impressive works on the deepest seas. | 24they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep. |
| 25He spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up the waves. | 25For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. |
| 26Their ships were tossed to the heavens and plunged again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror. | 26They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; |
| 27They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end. | 27they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end. |
| 28“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 28Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
| 29He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. | 29He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. |
| 30What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor! | 30Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. |
| 31Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 31Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! |
| 32Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation and before the leaders of the nation. | 32Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders. |
| 33He changes rivers into deserts, and springs of water into dry, thirsty land. | 33He turns rivers into a desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, |
| 34He turns the fruitful land into salty wastelands, because of the wickedness of those who live there. | 34a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants. |
| 35But he also turns deserts into pools of water, the dry land into springs of water. | 35He turns a desert into pools of water, a parched land into springs of water. |
| 36He brings the hungry to settle there and to build their cities. | 36And there he lets the hungry dwell, and they establish a city to live in; |
| 37They sow their fields, plant their vineyards, and harvest their bumper crops. | 37they sow fields and plant vineyards and get a fruitful yield. |
| 38How he blesses them! They raise large families there, and their herds of livestock increase. | 38By his blessing they multiply greatly, and he does not let their livestock diminish. |
| 39When they decrease in number and become impoverished through oppression, trouble, and sorrow, | 39When they are diminished and brought low through oppression, evil, and sorrow, |
| 40the LORD pours contempt on their princes, causing them to wander in trackless wastelands. | 40he pours contempt on princes and makes them wander in trackless wastes; |
| 41But he rescues the poor from trouble and increases their families like flocks of sheep. | 41but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks. |
| 42The godly will see these things and be glad, while the wicked are struck silent. | 42The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth. |
| 43Those who are wise will take all this to heart; they will see in our history the faithful love of the LORD. | 43Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD. |
