New Living Translation | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. | 1Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting. |
Has the LORD redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies. | 2Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, Whom He has redeemed from the hand of the adversary |
For he has gathered the exiles from many lands, from east and west, from north and south. | 3And gathered from the lands, From the east and from the west, From the north and from the south. |
Some wandered in the wilderness, lost and homeless. | 4They wandered in the wilderness in a desert region; They did not find a way to an inhabited city. |
Hungry and thirsty, they nearly died. | 5They were hungry and thirsty; Their soul fainted within them. |
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he rescued them from their distress. | 6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He delivered them out of their distresses. |
He led them straight to safety, to a city where they could live. | 7He led them also by a straight way, To go to an inhabited city. |
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. | 9For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good. |
Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery. | 10There were those who dwelt in darkness and in the shadow of death, Prisoners in misery and chains, |
They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High. | 11Because they had rebelled against the words of God And spurned the counsel of the Most High. |
That is why he broke them with hard labor; they fell, and no one was there to help them. | 12Therefore He humbled their heart with labor; They stumbled and there was none to help. |
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. |
He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; he snapped their chains. | 14He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death And broke their bands apart. |
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
For he broke down their prison gates of bronze; he cut apart their bars of iron. | 16For He has shattered gates of bronze And cut bars of iron asunder. |
Some were fools; they rebelled and suffered for their sins. | 17Fools, because of their rebellious way, And because of their iniquities, were afflicted. |
They couldn’t stand the thought of food, and they were knocking on death’s door. | 18Their soul abhorred all kinds of food, And they drew near to the gates of death. |
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them out of their distresses. |
He sent out his word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death. | 20He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions. |
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and sing joyfully about his glorious acts. | 22Let them also offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, And tell of His works with joyful singing. |
Some went off to sea in ships, plying the trade routes of the world. | 23Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters; |
They, too, observed the LORD’s power in action, his impressive works on the deepest seas. | 24They have seen the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep. |
He spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up the waves. | 25For He spoke and raised up a stormy wind, Which lifted up the waves of the sea. |
Their ships were tossed to the heavens and plunged again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror. | 26They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths; Their soul melted away in their misery. |
They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end. | 27They reeled and staggered like a drunken man, And were at their wits' end. |
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 28Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. |
He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. | 29He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed. |
What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor! | 30Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven. |
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His lovingkindness, And for His wonders to the sons of men! |
Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation and before the leaders of the nation. | 32Let them extol Him also in the congregation of the people, And praise Him at the seat of the elders. |
He changes rivers into deserts, and springs of water into dry, thirsty land. | 33He changes rivers into a wilderness And springs of water into a thirsty ground; |
He turns the fruitful land into salty wastelands, because of the wickedness of those who live there. | 34A fruitful land into a salt waste, Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it. |
But he also turns deserts into pools of water, the dry land into springs of water. | 35He changes a wilderness into a pool of water And a dry land into springs of water; |
He brings the hungry to settle there and to build their cities. | 36And there He makes the hungry to dwell, So that they may establish an inhabited city, |
They sow their fields, plant their vineyards, and harvest their bumper crops. | 37And sow fields and plant vineyards, And gather a fruitful harvest. |
How he blesses them! They raise large families there, and their herds of livestock increase. | 38Also He blesses them and they multiply greatly, And He does not let their cattle decrease. |
When they decrease in number and become impoverished through oppression, trouble, and sorrow, | 39When they are diminished and bowed down Through oppression, misery and sorrow, |
the LORD pours contempt on their princes, causing them to wander in trackless wastelands. | 40He pours contempt upon princes And makes them wander in a pathless waste. |
But he rescues the poor from trouble and increases their families like flocks of sheep. | 41But He sets the needy securely on high away from affliction, And makes his families like a flock. |
The godly will see these things and be glad, while the wicked are struck silent. | 42The upright see it and are glad; But all unrighteousness shuts its mouth. |
Those who are wise will take all this to heart; they will see in our history the faithful love of the LORD. | 43Who is wise? Let him give heed to these things, And consider the lovingkindnesses of the LORD. |
