| 1Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. | 1Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His faithful love endures forever. |
| 2Has the LORD redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies. | 2Let the redeemed of the LORD proclaim that He has redeemed them from the hand of the foe |
| 3For he has gathered the exiles from many lands, from east and west, from north and south. | 3and has gathered them from the lands-- from the east and the west, from the north and the south. |
| 4Some wandered in the wilderness, lost and homeless. | 4Some wandered in the desolate wilderness, finding no way to a city where they could live. |
| 5Hungry and thirsty, they nearly died. | 5They were hungry and thirsty; their spirits failed within them. |
| 6“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he rescued them from their distress. | 6Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He rescued them from their distress. |
| 7He led them straight to safety, to a city where they could live. | 7He led them by the right path to go to a city where they could live. |
| 8Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 8Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity. |
| 9For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. | 9For He has satisfied the thirsty and filled the hungry with good things. |
| 10Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery. | 10Others sat in darkness and gloom-- prisoners in cruel chains-- |
| 11They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High. | 11because they rebelled against God's commands and despised the counsel of the Most High. |
| 12That is why he broke them with hard labor; they fell, and no one was there to help them. | 12He broke their spirits with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. |
| 13“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 13Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them from their distress. |
| 14He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; he snapped their chains. | 14He brought them out of darkness and gloom and broke their chains apart. |
| 15Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 15Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity. |
| 16For he broke down their prison gates of bronze; he cut apart their bars of iron. | 16For He has broken down the bronze gates and cut through the iron bars. |
| 17Some were fools; they rebelled and suffered for their sins. | 17Fools suffered affliction because of their rebellious ways and their sins. |
| 18They couldn’t stand the thought of food, and they were knocking on death’s door. | 18They loathed all food and came near the gates of death. |
| 19“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 19Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them from their distress. |
| 20He sent out his word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death. | 20He sent His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit. |
| 21Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 21Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity. |
| 22Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and sing joyfully about his glorious acts. | 22Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and announce His works with shouts of joy. |
| 23Some went off to sea in ships, plying the trade routes of the world. | 23Others went to sea in ships, conducting trade on the vast waters. |
| 24They, too, observed the LORD’s power in action, his impressive works on the deepest seas. | 24They saw the LORD's works, His wonderful works in the deep. |
| 25He spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up the waves. | 25He spoke and raised a tempest that stirred up the waves of the sea. |
| 26Their ships were tossed to the heavens and plunged again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror. | 26Rising up to the sky, sinking down to the depths, their courage melting away in anguish, |
| 27They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end. | 27they reeled and staggered like drunken men, and all their skill was useless. |
| 28“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. | 28Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress. |
| 29He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves. | 29He stilled the storm to a murmur, and the waves of the sea were hushed. |
| 30What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor! | 30They rejoiced when the waves grew quiet. Then He guided them to the harbor they longed for. |
| 31Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. | 31Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for all humanity. |
| 32Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation and before the leaders of the nation. | 32Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders. |
| 33He changes rivers into deserts, and springs of water into dry, thirsty land. | 33He turns rivers into desert, springs of water into thirsty ground, |
| 34He turns the fruitful land into salty wastelands, because of the wickedness of those who live there. | 34and fruitful land into salty wasteland, because of the wickedness of its inhabitants. |
| 35But he also turns deserts into pools of water, the dry land into springs of water. | 35He turns a desert into a pool of water, dry land into springs of water. |
| 36He brings the hungry to settle there and to build their cities. | 36He causes the hungry to settle there, and they establish a city where they can live. |
| 37They sow their fields, plant their vineyards, and harvest their bumper crops. | 37They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest. |
| 38How he blesses them! They raise large families there, and their herds of livestock increase. | 38He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; He does not let their livestock decrease. |
| 39When they decrease in number and become impoverished through oppression, trouble, and sorrow, | 39When they are diminished and are humbled by cruel oppression and sorrow, |
| 40the LORD pours contempt on their princes, causing them to wander in trackless wastelands. | 40He pours contempt on nobles and makes them wander in a trackless wasteland. |
| 41But he rescues the poor from trouble and increases their families like flocks of sheep. | 41But He lifts the needy out of their suffering and makes their families multiply like flocks. |
| 42The godly will see these things and be glad, while the wicked are struck silent. | 42The upright see it and rejoice, and all injustice shuts its mouth. |
| 43Those who are wise will take all this to heart; they will see in our history the faithful love of the LORD. | 43Let whoever is wise pay attention to these things and consider the LORD's acts of faithful love. |
