Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.1Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, and his loyal love endures!
Has the LORD redeemed you? Then speak out! Tell others he has redeemed you from your enemies.2Let those delivered by the LORD speak out, those whom he delivered from the power of the enemy,
For he has gathered the exiles from many lands, from east and west, from north and south.3and gathered from foreign lands, from east and west, from north and south.
Some wandered in the wilderness, lost and homeless.4They wandered through the wilderness on a desert road; they found no city in which to live.
Hungry and thirsty, they nearly died.5They were hungry and thirsty; they fainted from exhaustion.
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he rescued them from their distress.6They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles.
He led them straight to safety, to a city where they could live.7He led them on a level road, that they might find a city in which to live.
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.8Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people!
For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.9For he has satisfied those who thirst, and those who hunger he has filled with food.
Some sat in darkness and deepest gloom, imprisoned in iron chains of misery.10They sat in utter darkness, bound in painful iron chains,
They rebelled against the words of God, scorning the counsel of the Most High.11because they had rebelled against God's commands, and rejected the instructions of the sovereign king.
That is why he broke them with hard labor; they fell, and no one was there to help them.12So he used suffering to humble them; they stumbled and no one helped them up.
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.13They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles.
He led them from the darkness and deepest gloom; he snapped their chains.14He brought them out of the utter darkness, and tore off their shackles.
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.15Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people!
For he broke down their prison gates of bronze; he cut apart their bars of iron.16For he shattered the bronze gates, and hacked through the iron bars.
Some were fools; they rebelled and suffered for their sins.17They acted like fools in their rebellious ways, and suffered because of their sins.
They couldn’t stand the thought of food, and they were knocking on death’s door.18They lost their appetite for all food, and they drew near the gates of death.
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.19They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles.
He sent out his word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death.20He sent them an assuring word and healed them; he rescued them from the pits where they were trapped.
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.21Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people!
Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and sing joyfully about his glorious acts.22Let them present thank offerings, and loudly proclaim what he has done!
Some went off to sea in ships, plying the trade routes of the world.23Some traveled on the sea in ships, and carried cargo over the vast waters.
They, too, observed the LORD’s power in action, his impressive works on the deepest seas.24They witnessed the acts of the LORD, his amazing feats on the deep water.
He spoke, and the winds rose, stirring up the waves.25He gave the order for a windstorm, and it stirred up the waves of the sea.
Their ships were tossed to the heavens and plunged again to the depths; the sailors cringed in terror.26They reached up to the sky, then dropped into the depths. The sailors' strength left them because the danger was so great.
They reeled and staggered like drunkards and were at their wits’ end.27They swayed and staggered like a drunk, and all their skill proved ineffective.
“LORD, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.28They cried out to the LORD in their distress; he delivered them from their troubles.
He calmed the storm to a whisper and stilled the waves.29He calmed the storm, and the waves grew silent.
What a blessing was that stillness as he brought them safely into harbor!30The sailors rejoiced because the waves grew quiet, and he led them to the harbor they desired.
Let them praise the LORD for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.31Let them give thanks to the LORD for his loyal love, and for the amazing things he has done for people!
Let them exalt him publicly before the congregation and before the leaders of the nation.32Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people! Let them praise him in the place where the leaders preside!
He changes rivers into deserts, and springs of water into dry, thirsty land.33He turned streams into a desert, springs of water into arid land,
He turns the fruitful land into salty wastelands, because of the wickedness of those who live there.34and a fruitful land into a barren place, because of the sin of its inhabitants.
But he also turns deserts into pools of water, the dry land into springs of water.35As for his people, he turned a desert into a pool of water, and a dry land into springs of water.
He brings the hungry to settle there and to build their cities.36He allowed the hungry to settle there, and they established a city in which to live.
They sow their fields, plant their vineyards, and harvest their bumper crops.37They cultivated fields, and planted vineyards, which yielded a harvest of fruit.
How he blesses them! They raise large families there, and their herds of livestock increase.38He blessed them so that they became very numerous. He would not allow their cattle to decrease in number.
When they decrease in number and become impoverished through oppression, trouble, and sorrow,39As for their enemies, they decreased in number and were beaten down, because of painful distress and suffering.
the LORD pours contempt on their princes, causing them to wander in trackless wastelands.40He would pour contempt upon princes, and he made them wander in a wasteland with no road.
But he rescues the poor from trouble and increases their families like flocks of sheep.41Yet he protected the needy from oppression, and cared for his families like a flock of sheep.
The godly will see these things and be glad, while the wicked are struck silent.42When the godly see this, they rejoice, and every sinner shuts his mouth.
Those who are wise will take all this to heart; they will see in our history the faithful love of the LORD.43Whoever is wise, let him take note of these things! Let them consider the LORD's acts of loyal love!
