New Living Translation | NET Bible |
Look! The LORD is about to destroy the earth and make it a vast wasteland. He devastates the surface of the earth and scatters the people. | 1Look, the LORD is ready to devastate the earth and leave it in ruins; he will mar its surface and scatter its inhabitants. |
Priests and laypeople, servants and masters, maids and mistresses, buyers and sellers, lenders and borrowers, bankers and debtors—none will be spared. | 2Everyone will suffer--the priest as well as the people, the master as well as the servant, the elegant lady as well as the female attendant, the seller as well as the buyer, the borrower as well as the lender, the creditor as well as the debtor. |
The earth will be completely emptied and looted. The LORD has spoken! | 3The earth will be completely devastated and thoroughly ransacked. For the LORD has decreed this judgment. |
The earth mourns and dries up, and the land wastes away and withers. Even the greatest people on earth waste away. | 4The earth dries up and withers, the world shrivels up and withers; the prominent people of the earth fade away. |
The earth suffers for the sins of its people, for they have twisted God’s instructions, violated his laws, and broken his everlasting covenant. | 5The earth is defiled by its inhabitants, for they have violated laws, disregarded the regulation, and broken the permanent treaty. |
Therefore, a curse consumes the earth. Its people must pay the price for their sin. They are destroyed by fire, and only a few are left alive. | 6So a treaty curse devours the earth; its inhabitants pay for their guilt. This is why the inhabitants of the earth disappear, and are reduced to just a handful of people. |
The grapevines waste away, and there is no new wine. All the merrymakers sigh and mourn. | 7The new wine dries up, the vines shrivel up, all those who like to celebrate groan. |
The cheerful sound of tambourines is stilled; the happy cries of celebration are heard no more. The melodious chords of the harp are silent. | 8The happy sound of the tambourines stops, the revelry of those who celebrate comes to a halt, the happy sound of the harp ceases. |
Gone are the joys of wine and song; alcoholic drink turns bitter in the mouth. | 9They no longer sing and drink wine; the beer tastes bitter to those who drink it. |
The city writhes in chaos; every home is locked to keep out intruders. | 10The ruined town is shattered; all of the houses are shut up tight. |
Mobs gather in the streets, crying out for wine. Joy has turned to gloom. Gladness has been banished from the land. | 11They howl in the streets because of what happened to the wine; all joy turns to sorrow; celebrations disappear from the earth. |
The city is left in ruins, its gates battered down. | 12The city is left in ruins; the gate is reduced to rubble. |
Throughout the earth the story is the same— only a remnant is left, like the stray olives left on the tree or the few grapes left on the vine after harvest. | 13This is what will happen throughout the earth, among the nations. It will be like when they beat an olive tree, and just a few olives are left at the end of the harvest. |
But all who are left shout and sing for joy. Those in the west praise the LORD’s majesty. | 14They lift their voices and shout joyfully; they praise the majesty of the LORD in the west. |
In eastern lands, give glory to the LORD. In the lands beyond the sea, praise the name of the LORD, the God of Israel. | 15So in the east extol the LORD, along the seacoasts extol the fame of the LORD God of Israel. |
We hear songs of praise from the ends of the earth, songs that give glory to the Righteous One! But my heart is heavy with grief. Weep for me, for I wither away. Deceit still prevails, and treachery is everywhere. | 16From the ends of the earth we hear songs--the Just One is majestic. But I say, "I'm wasting away! I'm wasting away! I'm doomed! Deceivers deceive, deceivers thoroughly deceive!" |
Terror and traps and snares will be your lot, you people of the earth. | 17Terror, pit, and snare are ready to overtake you inhabitants of the earth! |
Those who flee in terror will fall into a trap, and those who escape the trap will be caught in a snare. Destruction falls like rain from the heavens; the foundations of the earth shake. | 18The one who runs away from the sound of the terror will fall into the pit; the one who climbs out of the pit, will be trapped by the snare. For the floodgates of the heavens are opened up and the foundations of the earth shake. |
The earth has broken up. It has utterly collapsed; it is violently shaken. | 19The earth is broken in pieces, the earth is ripped to shreds, the earth shakes violently. |
The earth staggers like a drunk. It trembles like a tent in a storm. It falls and will not rise again, for the guilt of its rebellion is very heavy. | 20The earth will stagger around like a drunk; it will sway back and forth like a hut in a windstorm. Its sin will weigh it down, and it will fall and never get up again. |
In that day the LORD will punish the gods in the heavens and the proud rulers of the nations on earth. | 21At that time the LORD will punish the heavenly forces in the heavens and the earthly kings on the earth. |
They will be rounded up and put in prison. They will be shut up in prison and will finally be punished. | 22They will be imprisoned in a pit, locked up in a prison, and after staying there for a long time, they will be punished. |
Then the glory of the moon will wane, and the brightness of the sun will fade, for the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will rule on Mount Zion. He will rule in great glory in Jerusalem, in the sight of all the leaders of his people. | 23The full moon will be covered up, the bright sun will be darkened; for the LORD who commands armies will rule on Mount Zion in Jerusalem in the presence of his assembly, in majestic splendor. |
