| 1While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box. | 1Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the offering box. |
| 2Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins. | 2He also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. |
| 3 “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them. | 3He said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put in more than all of them. |
| 4 For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.” Jesus Speaks about the Future | 4For they all offered their gifts out of their wealth. But she, out of her poverty, put in everything she had to live on." |
| 5Some of his disciples began talking about the majestic stonework of the Temple and the memorial decorations on the walls. But Jesus said, | 5Now while some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and offerings, Jesus said, |
| 6 “The time is coming when all these things will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another!” | 6"As for these things that you are gazing at, the days will come when not one stone will be left on another. All will be torn down!" |
| 7“Teacher,” they asked, “when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to take place?” | 7So they asked him, "Teacher, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that these things are about to take place?" |
| 8He replied, “Don’t let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and saying, ‘The time has come!’ But don’t believe them. | 8He said, "Watch out that you are not misled. For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he,' and, 'The time is near.' Do not follow them! |
| 9 And when you hear of wars and insurrections, don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place first, but the end won’t follow immediately.” | 9And when you hear of wars and rebellions, do not be afraid. For these things must happen first, but the end will not come at once." |
| 10Then he added, “Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. | 10Then he said to them, "Nation will rise up in arms against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. |

| 12 “But before all this occurs, there will be a time of great persecution. You will be dragged into synagogues and prisons, and you will stand trial before kings and governors because you are my followers. | 12But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you, handing you over to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. |
| 13 But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me. | 13This will be a time for you to serve as witnesses. |
| 14 So don’t worry in advance about how to answer the charges against you, | 14Therefore be resolved not to rehearse ahead of time how to make your defense. |
| 15 for I will give you the right words and such wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you! | 15For I will give you the words along with the wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. |
| 16 Even those closest to you—your parents, brothers, relatives, and friends—will betray you. They will even kill some of you. | 16You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will have some of you put to death. |
| 17 And everyone will hate you because you are my followers. | 17You will be hated by everyone because of my name. |
| 18 But not a hair of your head will perish! | 18Yet not a hair of your head will perish. |
| 19 By standing firm, you will win your souls. | 19By your endurance you will gain your lives. |
| 20 “And when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that the time of its destruction has arrived. | 20"But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near. |
| 21 Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. Those in Jerusalem must get out, and those out in the country should not return to the city. | 21Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. Those who are inside the city must depart. Those who are out in the country must not enter it, |
| 22 For those will be days of God’s vengeance, and the prophetic words of the Scriptures will be fulfilled. | 22because these are days of vengeance, to fulfill all that is written. |
| 23 How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days. For there will be disaster in the land and great anger against this people. | 23Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing their babies in those days! | 24 They will be killed by the sword or sent away as captives to all the nations of the world. And Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the period of the Gentiles comes to an end. | 24They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led away as captives among all nations. | 25 “And there will be strange signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. | 25"And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth nations will be in distress, anxious over the roaring of the sea and the surging waves. |
| 26 People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth, for the powers in the heavens will be shaken. | 26People will be fainting from fear and from the expectation of what is coming on the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. |
| 27 Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with power and great glory. | 27Then they will see the Son of Man arriving in a cloud with power and great glory. |
| 28 So when all these things begin to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near!” | 28But when these things begin to happen, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." |
| 29Then he gave them this illustration: “Notice the fig tree, or any other tree. | 29Then he told them a parable: "Look at the fig tree and all the other trees. |

| 34 “Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware, | 34"But be on your guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day close down upon you suddenly like a trap. |
| 35 like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth. | 35For it will overtake all who live on the face of the whole earth. |
| 36 Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man.” | 36But stay alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that must happen, and to stand before the Son of Man." |
| 37Every day Jesus went to the Temple to teach, and each evening he returned to spend the night on the Mount of Olives. | 37So every day Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, but at night he went and stayed on the Mount of Olives. |
| 38The crowds gathered at the Temple early each morning to hear him. | 38And all the people came to him early in the morning to listen to him in the temple courts. |
