1	My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father— Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. 2	He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.	He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.	And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for <i>the sins of</i> the whole world.	and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for <i>the sins of</i> the whole world.	He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
3	By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him: if we keep His commandments.	And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.	And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.	By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.	We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands.
4	If anyone says, “I know Him, but does not keep His commandments, he is a liar, and the truth is not in him.	Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,	He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.	The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;	Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.
5	But if anyone keeps His word, the love of God has been truly perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him:	but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him:	But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.	but whoever follows His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him:	But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him:
6	Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as Jesus walked.	whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.	He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.	the one who says that he remains in Him ought, himself also, walk just as He walked.	Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
7	Beloved, I am not writing to you a new commandment, but an old one, which you have had from the beginning. This commandment is the message you have heard.	Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard.	Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.	Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you have heard.	Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard.
8	Then again, I am also writing to you a new commandment, which is TRUE in Him and also in you. For the darkness is fading and the TRUE light is already shining.	At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.	Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.	On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true Light is already shining.	Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.
9	If anyone claims to be in the light but hates his brother, he is still in the darkness.	Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness.	He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.	The one who says that he is in the Light and <i>yet</i> hates his brother <i>or sister</i> is in the darkness until now.	Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness.
10	Whoever loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no cause of stumbling in him.	Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling.	He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.	The one who loves his brother <i>and sister</i> remains in the Light, and there is nothing in him to cause stumbling.	Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.
11	But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness. He does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.	But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.	But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.	But the one who hates his brother <i>or sister</i> is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.	But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.
12	I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven through His name.	I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake.	I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.	I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven you on account of His name.	I am writing to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.
13	I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father.	I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, children, because you know the Father. 15	Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.	Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.	Love not the world, neither the things <i>that are</i> in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.	Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.	Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them.
16	For all that is in the world— the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life— is not from the Father but from the world.	For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.	For all that <i>is</i> in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.	For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.	For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.
17	The world is passing away, along with its desires; but whoever does the will of God remains forever.	And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.	And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.	The world is passing away and <i>also</i> its lusts; but the one who does the will of God continues <i>to live</i> forever.	The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
18	Children, it is the last hour; and just as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have appeared. This is how we know it is the last hour.	Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.	Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.	Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour.	Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.
19	They went out from us, but they did not belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. But their departure made it clear that none of them belonged to us.	They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.	They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would <i>no doubt</i> have continued with us: but <i>they went out</i>, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.	They went out from us, but they were not <i>really</i> of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but <i>they went out,</i> so that it would be evident that they all are not of us.	They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
20	You, however, have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.	But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.	But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.	But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know.	But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
21	I have not written to you because you lack knowledge of the truth, but because you have it, and because no lie comes from the truth.	I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.	I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.	I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth.	I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.
22	Who is the liar, if it is not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, who denies the Father and the Son.	Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.	Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.	Who is the liar except the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son.	Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist—denying the Father and the Son.
23	Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father, but whoever confesses the Son has the Father as well.	No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.	Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: <i>(but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also</i>.	Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father; the one who confesses the Son has the Father also.	No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
24	As for you, let what you have heard from the beginning remain in you. If it does, you will also remain in the Son and in the Father.	Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father.	Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.	<i>As for</i> you, <i>see that</i> what you heard from the beginning remains in you. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.	As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.
25	And this is the promise that He Himself made to us: eternal life.	And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.	And this is the promise that he hath promised us, <i>even</i> eternal life.	This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.	And this is what he promised us—eternal life.
26	I have written these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.	I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.	These <i>things</i> have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you.	These things I have written to you concerning those who are <i>trying to</i> deceive you.	I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray.
27	And as for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But just as His TRUE and genuine anointing teaches you about all things, so remain in Him as you have been taught.	But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.	But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.	And <i>as for</i> you, the anointing which you received from Him remains in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you remain in Him.	As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.
28	And now, little children, remain in Christ, so that when He appears, we may be confident and unashamed before Him at His coming.	And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.	And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.	Now, little children, remain in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not draw back from Him in shame at His coming.	And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.
29	If you know that He is righteous, you also know that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of Him.	If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.	If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.	If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness also has been born of Him.	If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.
