1 After that, Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let My people go, so that they may hold a feast to Me in the wilderness.’ ” Afterward Moses and Aaron went and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’” And afterward Moses and Aaron went in, and told Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness. And afterward Moses and Aaron came and said to Pharaoh, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel says: ‘Let My people go so that they may celebrate a feast to Me in the wilderness.’” Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.’”
2 But Pharaoh replied, “Who is the LORD that I should obey His voice and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and I will not let Israel go.” But Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.” And Pharaoh said, Who <i>is</i> the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go. But Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and besides, I will not let Israel go.” Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD and I will not let Israel go.”
3 “The God of the Hebrews has met with us,” they answered. “Please let us go on a three-day journey into the wilderness to sacrifice to the LORD our God, or He may strike us with plagues or with the sword.” Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please let us go a three days’ journey into the wilderness that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God, lest he fall upon us with pestilence or with the sword.” And they said, The God of the Hebrews hath met with us: let us go, we pray thee, three days' journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword. Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Please, let us go a three days’ journey into the wilderness so that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God, otherwise He will strike us with plague or with the sword.” Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword.”
4 But the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you draw the people away from their work? Get back to your labor!” But the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people away from their work? Get back to your burdens.” And the king of Egypt said unto them, Wherefore do ye, Moses and Aaron, let the people from their works? get you unto your burdens. But the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you let the people neglect their work? Get <i>back</i> to your labors!” But the king of Egypt said, “Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!”
5 Pharaoh also said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you would be stopping them from their labor.” And Pharaoh said, “Behold, the people of the land are now many, and you make them rest from their burdens!” And Pharaoh said, Behold, the people of the land now <i>are</i> many, and ye make them rest from their burdens. Again Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now many, and you would have them cease from their labors!” Then Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working.”
6 That same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people and their foremen: The same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people and their foremen, And Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying, So the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters over the people and their foremen, saying, That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and overseers in charge of the people:
7 “You shall no longer supply the people with straw for making bricks. They must go and gather their own straw. “You shall no longer give the people straw to make bricks, as in the past; let them go and gather straw for themselves. Ye shall no more give the people straw to make brick, as heretofore: let them go and gather straw for themselves. “You are no longer to give the people straw to make bricks as previously; have them go and gather straw for themselves. “You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw.
8 But require of them the same quota of bricks as before; do not reduce it. For they are lazy; that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ But the number of bricks that they made in the past you shall impose on them, you shall by no means reduce it, for they are idle. Therefore they cry, ‘Let us go and offer sacrifice to our God.’ And the tale of the bricks, which they did make heretofore, ye shall lay upon them; ye shall not diminish <i>ought</i> thereof: for they <i>be</i> idle; therefore they cry, saying, Let us go <i>and</i> sacrifice to our God. But you shall impose on them the quota of bricks which they were making before; you are not to reduce any of it. Because they are lazy, for that reason they cry out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’
9 Make the work harder on the men so they will be occupied and pay no attention to these lies.” Let heavier work be laid on the men that they may labor at it and pay no regard to lying words.” Let there more work be laid upon the men, that they may labour therein; and let them not regard vain words. Let the labor be heavier on the men, and have them work at it so that they will pay no attention to false words.” Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.”
10 So the taskmasters and foremen of the people went out and said to them, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I am no longer giving you straw. So the taskmasters and the foremen of the people went out and said to the people, “Thus says Pharaoh, ‘I will not give you straw. And the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spake to the people, saying, Thus saith Pharaoh, I will not give you straw. So the taskmasters of the people and their foremen went out and spoke to the people, saying, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I am not going to give you <i>any</i> straw. Then the slave drivers and the overseers went out and said to the people, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you any more straw.
11 Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it; but your workload will in no way be reduced.’ ” Go and get your straw yourselves wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced in the least.’” Go ye, get you straw where ye can find it: yet not ought of your work shall be diminished. You go, get straw for yourselves wherever you can find <i>it;</i> but none of your labor will be reduced.’” Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.’”

13 The taskmasters kept pressing them, saying, “Fulfill your quota each day, just as you did when straw was provided.” The taskmasters were urgent, saying, “Complete your work, your daily task each day, as when there was straw.” And the taskmasters hasted <i>them</i>, saying, Fulfil your works, <i>your</i> daily tasks, as when there was straw. And the taskmasters pressed them, saying, “Complete your work quota, <i>your</i> daily amount, just as when you had straw.” The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, “Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.”
14 Then the Israelite foremen, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over the people, were beaten and asked, “Why have you not fulfilled your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as you did before?” And the foremen of the people of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and were asked, “Why have you not done all your task of making bricks today and yesterday, as in the past?” And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, <i>and</i> demanded, Wherefore have ye not fulfilled your task in making brick both yesterday and to day, as heretofore? Moreover, the foremen of the sons of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and asked, “Why have you not completed your required task of making bricks either yesterday or today, as before?” And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?”
15 So the Israelite foremen went and appealed to Pharaoh: “Why are you treating your servants this way? Then the foremen of the people of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, “Why do you treat your servants like this? Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried unto Pharaoh, saying, Wherefore dealest thou thus with thy servants? Then the foremen of the sons of Israel came and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, “Why do you deal this way with your servants? Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: “Why have you treated your servants this way?
16 No straw has been given to your servants, yet we are told, ‘Make bricks!’ Look, your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.” No straw is given to your servants, yet they say to us, ‘Make bricks!’ And behold, your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people.” There is no straw given unto thy servants, and they say to us, Make brick: and, behold, thy servants <i>are</i> beaten; but the fault <i>is</i> in thine own people. There is no straw given to your servants, yet they keep saying to us, ‘Make bricks!’ And behold, your servants are being beaten; but it is the fault of your <i>own</i> people.” Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, ‘Make bricks!’ Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.”
17 “You are slackers!” Pharaoh replied. “Slackers! That is why you keep saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.’ But he said, “You are idle, you are idle; that is why you say, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.’ But he said, Ye <i>are</i> idle, <i>ye are</i> idle: therefore ye say, Let us go <i>and</i> do sacrifice to the LORD. But he said, “You are lazy, <i>very</i> lazy; for that reason you say, ‘Let us go <i>and</i> sacrifice to the LORD.’ Pharaoh said, “Lazy, that’s what you are—lazy! That is why you keep saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the LORD.’
18 Now get to work. You will be given no straw, yet you must deliver the full quota of bricks.” Go now and work. No straw will be given you, but you must still deliver the same number of bricks.” Go therefore now, <i>and</i> work; for there shall no straw be given you, yet shall ye deliver the tale of bricks. So go now <i>and</i> work; for you will be given no straw, but you must deliver the quota of bricks.” Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks.”
19 The Israelite foremen realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You must not reduce your daily quota of bricks.” The foremen of the people of Israel saw that they were in trouble when they said, “You shall by no means reduce your number of bricks, your daily task each day.” And the officers of the children of Israel did see <i>that</i> they <i>were</i> in evil <i>case</i>, after it was said, Ye shall not minish <i>ought</i> from your bricks of your daily task. The foremen of the sons of Israel saw that they were in trouble, since they were told, “You must not reduce your daily amount of bricks.” The Israelite overseers realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.”
20 When they left Pharaoh, they confronted Moses and Aaron, who stood waiting to meet them. They met Moses and Aaron, who were waiting for them, as they came out from Pharaoh; And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they came forth from Pharaoh: When they left Pharaoh’s presence, they met Moses and Aaron as they were waiting for them. When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them,
21 “May the LORD look upon you and judge you,” the foremen said, “for you have made us a stench before Pharaoh and his officials; you have placed in their hand a sword to kill us!” and they said to them, “The LORD look on you and judge, because you have made us stink in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants, and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.” And they said unto them, The LORD look upon you, and judge; because ye have made our savour to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us. And they said to them, “May the LORD look upon you and judge <i>you,</i> because you have made us repulsive in Pharaoh’s sight and in the sight of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us!” and they said, “May the LORD look on you and judge you! You have made us obnoxious to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.”
22 So Moses returned to the LORD and asked, “Lord, why have You brought trouble upon this people? Is this why You sent me? Then Moses turned to the LORD and said, “O Lord, why have you done evil to this people? Why did you ever send me? And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Lord, wherefore hast thou <i>so</i> evil entreated this people? why <i>is</i> it <i>that</i> thou hast sent me? Then Moses returned to the LORD and said, “Lord, why have You brought harm to this people? Why did You ever send me? Moses returned to the LORD and said, “Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me?
23 Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and You have not delivered Your people in any way.” For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not delivered your people at all.” For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all. Ever since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has done harm to this people, and You have not rescued Your people at all.” Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.”
