The Capture of Rabbah

In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war,

Military campaigns commonly began after winter, when roads were passable, weather had improved, and fresh crops could help supply an army. Israel followed this established pattern as it continued its conflict with Ammon.

2Sa 11:1 In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war,…
1Ki 20:22 Afterward, the prophet approached the king of Israel…
1Ki 20:26 In the spring, Ben-hadad mobilized the Arameans…

Joab led out the army and ravaged the land of the Ammonites.

As commander of David’s forces, Joab carried the war into Ammonite territory, devastating the surrounding land and weakening the nation before moving against its capital.

2Sa 10:7-14 On hearing this, David sent Joab and the entire army…
1Ch 19:8-15 On hearing this, David sent Joab and the entire army…
Jdg 11:33 With a great blow he devastated twenty cities…

He came to Rabbah and besieged it,

Rabbah, Ammon’s fortified capital, stood in the region of present-day Amman, Jordan. Joab’s siege isolated the city and brought the remaining Ammonite resistance under pressure.

2Sa 12:26-28 Meanwhile, Joab fought against Rabbah of the Ammonites…
2Ki 6:24-25 Some time later, Ben-hadad king of Aram assembled his army…
2Ch 32:1-5 After all these acts of faithfulness, Sennacherib…

but David remained in Jerusalem.

David did not accompany the army, leaving Joab to direct the campaign. His stay in Jerusalem forms the setting for the events involving Bathsheba recorded in the parallel account.

2Sa 11:2 One evening David got up from his bed and strolled around…
1Ki 1:1-4 Now King David was old and well along in years,…
2Sa 18:3 But the people pleaded, “You must not go out!…

And Joab attacked Rabbah and demolished it.

The fall of Rabbah secured Israel’s victory over Ammon and demonstrated the strength of David’s kingdom under Joab’s military leadership.

2Sa 12:29-31 So David assembled all the troops and went to Rabbah;…
2Ki 14:13 There at Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured…
2Ki 25:10-11 And the whole army of the Chaldeans under…

Then David took the crown from the head of their king.

After Rabbah fell, David took the royal crown of the Ammonite ruler, marking the complete defeat of the city and its kingdom. The crown publicly displayed the transfer of authority from Ammon to Israel.

2Sa 12:30 Then he took the crown from the head of their king.…
Job 19:9 He has stripped me of my honor and removed the crown…
Ezk 21:26 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Remove the turban,…

It was found to weigh a talent of gold and was set with precious stones,

The crown’s enormous weight and costly stones reveal the wealth of the Ammonite monarchy. Its value also reflects the importance of Rabbah as the capital of Ammon.

Exo 28:17-20 And mount on it a setting of gemstones, four rows of stones:…
Ezk 28:13 You were in Eden, the garden of God…
1Ch 29:2-3 Now with all my ability I have made provision…

and it was placed on David’s head.

David’s wearing of the crown represented his victory and his rule over the conquered people. As Israel’s anointed king, he received the authority and resources gained through the Lord’s deliverance in battle.

2Ki 11:12 Then Jehoiada brought out the king’s son,…
Psa 21:3 For You welcomed him with rich blessings;…
Est 2:17 And the king loved Esther more than all the other women…

And David took a great amount of plunder from the city.

The wealth taken from Rabbah added to the resources of David’s kingdom, including materials and treasures later associated with Israel’s national strength and worship.

2Sa 8:12 Edom and Moab, from the Ammonites and Philistines…
1Ch 18:11 King David dedicated these to the LORD.…
Deu 20:14 But the women, children, livestock, and whatever else…

David brought out the people who were there

After capturing Rabbah, David took the surviving Ammonite inhabitants into his control. Conquered populations were commonly placed under the authority of the victorious king and required to serve the new regime.

2Sa 12:31 David brought out the people who were there…
2Ki 25:11 Then Nebuzaradan carried into exile the people…
Jdg 1:28 When Israel became stronger, they pressed the Canaanites…

and put them to work with saws, iron picks, and axes.

The Ammonites were assigned heavy labor involving tools used for building, cutting stone or timber, and other public works. Their service demonstrated Israel’s authority over a people who had long opposed them.

2Ch 2:17-18 Solomon numbered all the foreign men in the land of Israel…
1Ki 5:13-18 Then King Solomon conscripted a labor force…
Jos 9:21-27 They continued, “Let them live, but let them be…

And he did the same to all the Ammonite cities.

David extended this policy throughout Ammonite territory, bringing its cities under Israelite rule and removing their ability to threaten Israel again.

2Sa 11:1 In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war,…
Jer 49:2 Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,…
Ezk 25:5-7 I will make Rabbah a pasture for camels,…

Then David and all his troops returned to Jerusalem.

With the campaign completed, David returned with his army to the capital, where his victories strengthened the security and reach of his kingdom.

2Sa 20:22 Then the woman went to all the people with her wise counsel,…
2Sa 10:14 When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled…
1Ch 19:15 When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled,…

Battles against the Philistines

Some time later,

“Some time later” indicates that, after a period of relative calm, conflict resumed along Israel’s western frontier.

2Sa 5:17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed…
1Ch 14:8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king…

Once again there was a battle with the Philistines,

Israel’s conflict with the Philistines continued during David’s reign. The Philistines remained a powerful coastal people and repeatedly threatened Israel’s security.

and Elhanan son of Jair

Elhanan, whose name means “God is gracious,” was one of David’s mighty warriors. Though little else is recorded about him or his father, his victory shows that God used faithful men beyond the most prominent leaders of Israel.

2Sa 21:19 Once again there was a battle with the Philistines at Gob…
2Sa 21:18 Some time later at Gob, there was another battle…
2Sa 21:20 And there was also a battle at Gath, where there was a man…

1Sa 17:7 The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam,…
1Sa 17:45 But David said to the Philistine, “You come against me…

And there was also a battle at Gath,

Gath remained a major Philistine stronghold and the home of formidable warriors. Israel’s repeated conflicts with the Philistines show the continuing struggle to secure the land God had given them.

1Sa 17:23 And as he was speaking with them, suddenly the champion…

where there was a man of great stature

Among the Philistines was another unusually large warrior, like Goliath of Gath. His presence represented both a military threat and the lingering influence of the giant clans in the region.

Num 13:33 We even saw the Nephilim there—the descendants of Anak…

with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot—twenty-four in all.

His extraordinary physical features distinguished him from other men and likely added to the fear he inspired on the battlefield. Yet his size and appearance did not protect him from Israel’s warriors.

2Sa 21:20 And there was also a battle at Gath, where there was a man…
1Ch 11:23 He also struck down an Egyptian, a huge man five cubits tall.…
2Sa 23:20-21 And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a man of valor…

He too was descended from Rapha,

He belonged to the line of giants associated with the Rephaim. His defeat demonstrated again that Israel’s victories did not depend on the strength or stature of its enemies.

2Sa 21:18 Some time later at Gob, there was another battle…
2Sa 21:19 Once again there was a battle with the Philistines at Gob…

and when he taunted Israel,

The Philistine’s defiance was directed against Israel and its God, provoking a response from David’s household. His challenge reflected the continuing hostility between Israel and the Philistine giants.

1Sa 17:10 Then the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel…
1Sa 17:26 David asked the men who were standing with him,……
1Sa 17:36 Your servant has killed lions and bears;…

Jonathan the son of David’s brother Shimei

So these descendants of Rapha in Gath

These giants belonged to a remnant of the Rephaim living in Gath, a leading Philistine city long associated with formidable warriors, including Goliath. Their presence reflects the continuing threat posed by Philistia during David’s reign.

fell at the hands of David and his servants.

David’s forces overcame these enemies through the courage and skill of his leading warriors. Their defeat completed a decisive series of victories over the Philistine giants and demonstrated the security God gave Israel under David’s rule.

2Sa 21:22 So these four descendants of Rapha in Gath fell…
