Berean Study Bible A Message to CushA solemn oracle is directed toward Cush, a powerful land marked by the constant sound of insects along its waterways and marshes. The warning comes during a period when Cush and Egypt faced the expanding threat of Assyria. Isa 20:3-5 Then the LORD said, “Just as My servant Isaiah has gone… along the rivers of Cush, Cush lay south of Egypt in the region of modern Sudan and Ethiopia, centered around the upper Nile and its tributaries. In Isaiah’s day, Cushite rulers exercised influence over Egypt and participated in the political struggles of the ancient Near East. God’s message reaches even this distant and formidable nation. 2Ki 19:9 Now Sennacherib had been warned about Tirhakah king of Cush:… which sends couriers by sea, Cush, often associated with the region of modern-day Sudan and Ethiopia, maintained communication and trade routes along the Nile and surrounding waters, reflecting its regional reach and organization. Its location south of Egypt gave it access to important waterways that connected distant peoples and kingdoms. Ezk 30:9 On that day messengers will go out from Me in ships… in papyrus vessels on the waters. Lightweight boats made from papyrus reeds were well suited to the Nile and its tributaries. Their use identifies the river-centered setting of Cush and the practical means by which its envoys traveled quickly. Exo 2:3 But when she could no longer hide him… Go, swift messengers, The couriers are dispatched with an urgent announcement from the Lord. Though Cush was distant from Judah, it stood within God’s authority and would receive notice of His purposes. Est 8:10 Mordecai wrote in the name of King Xerxes… to a people tall and smooth-skinned, The people of Cush were recognized by their distinctive appearance and imposing stature. They were familiar to surrounding nations through trade, diplomacy, and military contact. Jer 13:23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots?… to a people widely feared, Cush had a reputation for strength and military capability. Its distance, resources, and association with powerful southern kingdoms contributed to the fear it inspired among other peoples. Hab 1:7 They are dreaded and feared; from themselves… to a powerful nation of strange speech, Their language marked them as a foreign people to Judah. Yet their cultural distance did not place them beyond God’s knowledge or rule. Deu 28:49 The LORD will bring a nation from afar… whose land is divided by rivers. Cush was a land shaped by the Nile and its tributaries, whose waters supported travel, agriculture, and settlement. The description emphasizes both the fertility and strategic character of the region. Nam 3:8 Are you better than Thebes, stationed by the Nile… All you people of the world and dwellers of the earth, The announcement reaches beyond Judah and Cush to every nation. God’s coming action will affect the whole world and cannot be treated as a local conflict. Psa 49:1-2 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.… when a banner is raised on the mountains, you will see it; A banner displayed on high ground served as a public military signal, calling attention to the movement of armies and the approach of decisive events. The sign will be visible to all. Isa 13:2 Raise a banner on a barren hilltop; call aloud to them.… when a ram’s horn sounds, you will hear it. The horn announces an urgent summons, often connected with battle or judgment. God’s intervention will be as unmistakable as a signal seen from afar and heard across the land. Zec 9:14 The Lord GOD will sound the ram’s horn and advance… For this is what the LORD has told me: Isaiah reports a direct revelation from the LORD, grounding the message in God’s own authority rather than human judgment. 1Ki 22:14 As surely as the LORD lives, I will speak… “I will quietly look on from My dwelling place, God will remain in heaven, watching the nations and allowing their plans to proceed until His appointed time for action. Psa 102:19-20 For He looked down from the heights of His sanctuary;… like shimmering heat in the sunshine, His presence is steady and powerful, though His restraint may appear silent to those awaiting judgment. Psa 19:4-6 their voice has gone out into all the earth,… like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.” As dew rests over a field at harvest, God’s purpose is present and certain while events ripen toward their outcome. Mic 5:7 Then the remnant of Jacob will be like dew from the LORD,… For before the harvest, God’s judgment will come before Cush’s plans reach their intended success. The nation’s growing influence will be interrupted at the moment it appears ready to bear lasting fruit. Mat 13:30 Let both grow together until the harvest.… when the blossom is gone Its early promise will have passed, and its ambitions will seem established. What appeared strong and favorable will prove temporary before the Lord’s intervention. Job 14:2 Like a flower, he comes forth, then withers away… and the flower becomes a ripening grape, The image portrays a kingdom nearing maturity, with its power and expectations developing toward completion. Yet the process will not be allowed to finish. Gen 40:10 and on the vine were three branches. As it budded… He will cut off the shoots with a pruning knife The Lord will act decisively against the nation’s advancing strength, removing what has grown and preventing further expansion. Jhn 15:2 He cuts off every branch in Me that bears no fruit,… and remove and discard the branches. Its leadership, military power, and political designs will be stripped away. The judgment will leave its proud enterprise broken before it can achieve its purpose. Jhn 15:6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch… They will all be left to the mountain birds of prey, and to the beasts of the land. God’s judgment will leave the defeated exposed and unburied, a grave dishonor in the ancient world. The birds and beasts portray the completeness of the destruction: no human power will remain to recover the dead or restore the land. Ezk 39:4-5 On the mountains of Israel you will fall… The birds will feed on them in summer, The devastation will be prolonged through the summer, when the remains of the fallen lie openly across the land. What might ordinarily be a season of abundance becomes a picture of judgment and ruin. Jer 19:7 And in this place I will ruin the plans of Judah… and all the wild animals in winter. The judgment will continue into winter, showing that it is neither brief nor partial. The land will remain desolate through every season, bearing witness to the certainty and severity of God’s decree. Ezk 32:4 I will abandon you on the land and hurl you… At that time gifts will be brought to the LORD of Hosts— The feared nation addressed in the chapter will bring tribute to the God who rules over every people and power. Psa 72:10-11 May the kings of Tarshish and distant shores bring tribute;… from a people tall and smooth-skinned, The description identifies the Cushites, a prominent people living south of Egypt. Jer 13:23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots?… from a people widely feared, Their military strength and distant influence had made them formidable among surrounding nations. Deu 2:25 This very day I will begin to put the dread and fear… from a powerful nation of strange speech, Though separated from Judah by language and culture, they will acknowledge the LORD’s authority. Deu 28:49 The LORD will bring a nation from afar… whose land is divided by rivers— Cush was associated with the Nile and its tributaries, a region marked by great waterways. Zep 3:10 From beyond the rivers of Cush My worshipers,… to Mount Zion, the place of the Name of the LORD of Hosts. Their gifts will be brought to Jerusalem, where the LORD had placed His name, showing that even distant nations will submit to Him. Psa 132:13-14 For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
