The safety of such as trust in God4. A prayer for the godly, and against the wicked But those who turn aside to crooked ways This phrase speaks to the deliberate choice of some to deviate from the path of righteousness. The Hebrew word for "turn aside" is "natah," which implies a willful bending or turning away. In the context of ancient Israel, this could refer to those who abandon the covenantal laws and practices established by God. The "crooked ways" symbolize paths of moral and spiritual deviation, often associated with idolatry and injustice. Historically, Israel faced numerous temptations to adopt the practices of surrounding nations, which often led them away from God's commandments. the LORD will banish with the evildoers Peace be upon Israel But peace.--Better, as an innovation on the customary form, peace be in Israel. (See Note on Psalm 122:6, and comp. Psalm 128:6.) Verse 5. - As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways. The word translated "crooked ways" occurs only here and in Judges 5:6. It means properly "by-paths," deviations from the straight path of right. The Lord shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity. God shall give them no better portion than he assigns to the open evildoers, since their heart is not really whole with him. But peace shall be upon Israel; rather, but peace be upon Israel. The psalmist winds up with a prayer, not a prophecy.
