Teachings of Jesus on Prayer

This statement highlights the necessity of believing in God's power and willingness to answer prayer as a prerequisite for receiving what is asked.

The Name of Jesus

Praying in the name of Jesus is another significant aspect of receiving answers to prayer. Jesus instructs His disciples to pray in His name, which signifies praying with His authority and in alignment with His will. In John 14:13-14 , Jesus promises, "And I will do whatever you ask in My name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it." This assurance indicates that prayers offered in the name of Jesus carry the promise of divine response, provided they align with God's purposes.

The Will of God

While Jesus assures believers of answers to prayer, He also teaches that such answers are contingent upon the will of God. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus Himself models submission to God's will in prayer. In Matthew 26:39 , He prays, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will." This submission to God's will serves as a reminder that while God is eager to answer prayer, His responses are always in accordance with His perfect will and wisdom.

Persistence in Prayer

Jesus also teaches the importance of persistence in prayer. In the parable of the persistent widow (Luke 18:1-8), He illustrates the value of continual prayer and not losing heart. The parable concludes with the assurance that God will bring about justice for His chosen ones who cry out to Him day and night. This teaching encourages believers to remain steadfast in prayer, trusting in God's timing and faithfulness.

Examples of Christ Answering Prayer

Throughout the Gospels, there are numerous examples of Jesus responding to the prayers and requests of individuals. One notable instance is the healing of the centurion's servant in Matthew 8:5-13. The centurion approaches Jesus with faith, and Jesus responds to his request, healing the servant from a distance. Another example is the raising of Lazarus from the dead in John 11:41-44, where Jesus prays to the Father and then commands Lazarus to come forth, demonstrating His authority and power in response to prayer.

These teachings and examples collectively affirm the assurance that Christ gives regarding answers to prayer. They encourage believers to approach God with faith, persistence, and a heart aligned with His will, trusting in His promise to hear and respond to their petitions.
