Magistrates: should be Faithful to the Sovereign

In the biblical context, magistrates are civil officers or judges who are entrusted with the administration of justice and governance. The role of magistrates is significant in maintaining order and executing the laws of the land. From a scriptural standpoint, magistrates are expected to be faithful to the sovereign authority, which ultimately is God Himself, as well as to the earthly authorities established by Him.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible provides a framework for understanding the role and responsibilities of magistrates. In Romans 13:1-2 , the Apostle Paul writes, "Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. Consequently, whoever resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves." This passage underscores the divine origin of authority and the duty of magistrates to uphold justice as representatives of God's order.

Characteristics of Faithful Magistrates

1. Justice and Righteousness: Magistrates are called to administer justice impartially and righteously. In 2 Chronicles 19:6-7 , Jehoshaphat instructs the judges, "Consider carefully what you do, because you are not judging for man, but for the LORD, who is with you whenever you give a verdict. Now let the fear of the LORD be upon you. Be careful in what you do, for there is no injustice or partiality or bribery with the LORD our God." This highlights the expectation that magistrates should reflect God's justice in their judgments.

2. Wisdom and Discernment: The need for wisdom is paramount for those in positions of authority. Solomon, known for his wisdom, prayed for discernment to govern the people rightly. In 1 Kings 3:9 , he asks, "Give Your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge Your people and to discern between good and evil. For who is able to govern this great people of Yours?" Magistrates should seek divine wisdom to make sound decisions.

3. Integrity and Fear of God: Integrity is a crucial attribute for magistrates. Exodus 18:21 advises, "Furthermore, select capable men from among the people—God-fearing, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain. Appoint them over the people as leaders of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens." This instruction emphasizes the importance of selecting leaders who are honest and fear God, ensuring that their actions align with His will.

Accountability to the Sovereign

Magistrates are accountable to God, the ultimate sovereign, for their actions and decisions. Psalm 82:1-4 portrays God standing in judgment among the "gods" (rulers or judges), reminding them of their responsibility to defend the weak and uphold justice: "How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; uphold the rights of the afflicted and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; save them from the hand of the wicked."

Role in Society

Magistrates play a vital role in society by ensuring that laws are applied fairly and that justice prevails. Their faithfulness to the sovereign is demonstrated through their commitment to uphold the principles of justice, equity, and righteousness as ordained by God. In doing so, they contribute to the peace and stability of the community, reflecting the order and justice of God's kingdom on earth.

Daniel 6:4
Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; for as much as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.
