The Ascension of Christ: from Mount Olivet

The Ascension of Christ is a pivotal event in Christian theology, marking the conclusion of Jesus Christ's earthly ministry and His return to the Father in heaven. This event is recorded in the New Testament, primarily in the books of Luke and Acts, and holds significant theological implications for the understanding of Christ's divine nature, His ongoing priestly ministry, and the promise of His return.

Biblical Account

The Ascension took place on the Mount of Olives, also known as Mount Olivet, a ridge located east of Jerusalem. According to the Gospel of Luke, Jesus led His disciples out to Bethany, on the slopes of the Mount of Olives, where He blessed them before being taken up into heaven. Luke 24:50-51 states, "When Jesus had led them out as far as Bethany, He lifted up His hands and blessed them. While He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven."

The book of Acts provides a more detailed account of the Ascension. Acts 1:9-11 describes the event: "After He had said this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud hid Him from their sight. They were looking intently into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 'Men of Galilee,' they said, 'why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.'"

Theological Significance

The Ascension signifies the exaltation of Jesus Christ, affirming His divine authority and kingship. It marks the completion of His redemptive work on earth and His enthronement at the right hand of God the Father. This event fulfills the prophecy found in Psalm 110:1 , "The LORD said to my Lord: 'Sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.'"

The Ascension also inaugurates Christ's high priestly ministry in heaven, where He intercedes on behalf of believers. Hebrews 4:14-16 emphasizes this role: "Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who was tempted in every way that we are, yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."

Promise of Return

The Ascension also carries the promise of Christ's return. The angelic message in Acts 1:11 assures the disciples that Jesus will come back in the same manner as He ascended. This promise is a cornerstone of Christian eschatology, providing hope and anticipation for the second coming of Christ, when He will establish His eternal kingdom.

Impact on the Early Church

The Ascension had a profound impact on the early Christian community. It marked the transition from Jesus' physical presence to the era of the Holy Spirit, who was promised to empower the disciples for their mission. Acts 1:8 records Jesus' promise: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

The Ascension, therefore, is not only a historical event but also a theological cornerstone that underscores the continuity of Christ's work through the Church, empowered by the Holy Spirit, until His promised return.
