Throughout the biblical narrative, the Jewish people, as God's chosen nation, have faced numerous adversities and afflictions. Scripture records divine denunciations against those who have exacerbated these hardships, highlighting God's protective and covenantal relationship with Israel. The Bible consistently portrays God as a defender of His people, and He pronounces judgment upon those who seek to increase their suffering.
1. Edom's Hostility:The Edomites, descendants of Esau, are frequently condemned for their antagonism towards Israel. The prophet Obadiah delivers a scathing rebuke against Edom for their actions during Jerusalem's downfall.
Obadiah 1:12-13 states, "But you should not gloat in the day of your brother, in the day of his misfortune, nor rejoice over the people of Judah in the day of their destruction, nor boastfully mock in the day of distress. You should not enter the gate of My people in the day of their disaster, nor gloat over their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor seize their wealth in the day of their disaster."
2. Moab and Ammon's Rejoicing:The nations of Moab and Ammon are also criticized for their attitudes towards Israel's suffering.
Ezekiel 25:3-6 records God's words against these nations: "Say to the Ammonites, 'Hear the word of the Lord GOD. This is what the Lord GOD says: Because you said, "Aha!" over My sanctuary when it was desecrated, and over the land of Israel when it was laid waste, and over the house of Judah when they went into exile, therefore I will give you to the people of the East as a possession.'"
3. Philistia's Vengeance:The Philistines, long-time adversaries of Israel, are condemned for their vengeful actions. In
Ezekiel 25:15-17 , God declares, "This is what the Lord GOD says: Because the Philistines acted in vengeance, taking vengeance with malice in their hearts, and seeking to destroy Judah with ancient hostility, therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: I will stretch out My hand against the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethites and destroy the remnant along the coast."
4. Tyre's Opportunism:Tyre is rebuked for its opportunistic behavior during Israel's distress. In
Ezekiel 26:2-3 , the Lord speaks against Tyre: "Son of man, because Tyre has said of Jerusalem, 'Aha! The gateway of the peoples is broken, and it has swung open to me; I will be filled now that she lies in ruins,' therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I am against you, O Tyre, and I will bring many nations against you, as the sea brings up its waves."
5. Babylon's Excessive Cruelty:While Babylon was used as an instrument of judgment against Judah, the Scriptures also denounce Babylon for its excessive cruelty.
Isaiah 47:6 records God's indictment: "I was angry with My people; I profaned My inheritance; I gave them into your hand. You showed them no mercy; even on the aged you laid a very heavy yoke."
These denunciations serve as a reminder of God's justice and His unwavering commitment to His covenant people. The biblical text underscores that while God may use nations to discipline Israel, He holds those same nations accountable for their actions and attitudes towards His chosen people.
