David answered Gad,
David, the second king of Israel, is responding to Gad, a prophet and seer who served as David's advisor. Gad's role as a prophet is significant, as he conveys God's messages to David, including the options for punishment due to David's sin of conducting a census. This interaction highlights the importance of prophetic guidance in the Old Testament and the close relationship between kings and prophets in Israel's history.

“I am deeply distressed.
David's distress is a result of his realization of sin and the impending consequences. This phrase reflects the weight of responsibility and guilt he feels as a leader who has led his people into sin. It echoes the emotional turmoil seen in other biblical figures who faced the consequences of their actions, such as Jonah or Peter after denying Christ. David's distress is a reminder of the human condition and the need for repentance.

Please, let me fall into the hand of the LORD,
David chooses to trust in God's mercy rather than human judgment. This decision reflects his understanding of God's character as just and merciful. The phrase suggests a deep faith in God's sovereignty and a preference for divine discipline over human retribution. It connects to other scriptures where individuals place their trust in God, such as Psalm 118:8, "It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in humans."

for His mercies are very great;
David acknowledges God's abundant mercy, a recurring theme throughout the Bible. This recognition of divine mercy is foundational to the understanding of God's nature in both the Old and New Testaments. It foreshadows the ultimate expression of God's mercy through Jesus Christ, who embodies grace and forgiveness. The concept of God's mercy is central to the covenant relationship between God and His people.

but do not let me fall into the hands of men.”
David expresses a desire to avoid human judgment, which can be harsh and unforgiving. This reflects a biblical theme of the fallibility and unpredictability of human justice compared to divine justice. The phrase underscores the belief that God's ways are higher than human ways, as seen in Isaiah 55:8-9. It also highlights the potential for human cruelty and the preference for divine intervention, which is seen as more compassionate and just.

Persons / Places / Events
1. David
The King of Israel who, despite his deep faith, made a grave error by ordering a census of Israel, which was against God's will. His response to the consequences of his sin reveals his trust in God's mercy.

2. Gad

3. The LORD

Teaching Points
Trust in God's Mercy
David's choice to fall into the hands of the LORD rather than man underscores the importance of trusting in God's mercy, even when facing consequences for our actions.

The Consequences of Sin
This passage serves as a reminder that sin has consequences, not only for the individual but also for the community. It calls us to consider the broader impact of our actions.

Repentance and Humility
David's response to his sin demonstrates a heart of repentance and humility. We are encouraged to approach God with a similar attitude when we err.

God's Sovereignty and Justice
The passage highlights God's sovereignty in administering justice. It reassures us that His judgments are tempered with mercy.

The Role of Prophets
Gad's role as a messenger of God emphasizes the importance of listening to and heeding godly counsel in our lives.(13) And David said.--Almost identical with Samuel. "Let me fall" looks like an improvement of Samuel, "Let us fall." The word "very" (not in Sam.) is perhaps an accidental repetition from the Hebrew of I am in a great strait.

Let me not fall.--Samuel has a precative form of the same verb ('epp?l?h; here 'epp?l).

David confesses inability to choose. So much only is clear to him, that it is better to be dependent on the compassion of God than of man; and thus, by implication he decides against the second alternative, leaving the rest to God. Famine, sword, and pestilence were each regarded as Divine visitations, but the last especially so, because of the apparent suddenness of its outbreak and the mysterious nature of its operation.

Verse 13. - It is in such answers as these - answers of equal piety and practical wisdom, that the difference is often visible between the man radically bad, and the man good at heart and the child of grace, even when fallen into the deepest depth of sin.
