Abram and Lot Part Ways

1 וַיַּעַל֩ (And went up) אַבְרָ֨ם (Abram) מִמִּצְרַ֜יִם (from Egypt), ה֠וּא (he) וְאִשְׁתּ֧וֹ (and his wife) וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) ל֛וֹ (he had)— וְל֥וֹט (and Lot) עִמּ֖וֹ (with him)— הַנֶּֽגְבָּה׃ (to the Negev).

2 וְאַבְרָ֖ם (And Abram) כָּבֵ֣ד (was rich) מְאֹ֑ד (very) בַּמִּקְנֶ֕ה (in the livestock), בַּכֶּ֖סֶף (in the silver), וּבַזָּהָֽב׃ (and in the gold).

3 וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ (And he went) לְמַסָּעָ֔יו (on his journey) מִנֶּ֖גֶב (from the Negev) וְעַד־ (and even) בֵּֽית־ (to Beth-) אֵ֑ל (el), עַד־ (to) הַמָּק֗וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) הָ֨יָה (had been) שָׁ֤ם (-) אָהֳלֹה (his tent) בַּתְּחִלָּ֔ה (at the beginning), בֵּ֥ין (between) בֵּֽית־ (Beth-) אֵ֖ל (el) וּבֵ֥ין (and between) הָעָֽי׃ (Ai),

4 אֶל־ (to) מְקוֹם֙ (the place) הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ (of the altar), אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָ֥שָׂה (he had made) שָׁ֖ם (there) בָּרִאשֹׁנָ֑ה (at the first). וַיִּקְרָ֥א (And called) שָׁ֛ם (there) אַבְרָ֖ם (Abram) בְּשֵׁ֥ם (on the name) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

5 וְגַם־ (And also) לְל֔וֹט (Lot), הַהֹלֵ֖ךְ (who went) אֶת־ (with) אַבְרָ֑ם (Abram), הָיָ֥ה (had) צֹאן־ (a flock) וּבָקָ֖ר (and a herd) וְאֹהָלִֽים׃ (and tents).

6 וְלֹא־ (And not) נָשָׂ֥א (was able to support) אֹתָ֛ם (them) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land), לָשֶׁ֣בֶת (to dwell) יַחְדָּ֑ו (together); כִּֽי־ (for) הָיָ֤ה (were) רְכוּשָׁם֙ (their possessions) רָ֔ב (great) וְלֹ֥א (and not) יָֽכְל֖וּ (they were able) לָשֶׁ֥בֶת (to dwell) יַחְדָּֽו׃ (together).

7 וַֽיְהִי־ (And there was) רִ֗יב (strife) בֵּ֚ין (between) רֹעֵ֣י (the shepherds) מִקְנֵֽה־ (of livestock) אַבְרָ֔ם (of Abram) וּבֵ֖ין (and between) רֹעֵ֣י (the shepherds) מִקְנֵה־ (of livestock). ל֑וֹט (Of Lot). וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִי֙ (And the Canaanite) וְהַפְּרִזִּ֔י (and the Perizzite) אָ֖ז (were then) יֹשֵׁ֥ב (dwelling) בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ (in the land).

8 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אַבְרָ֜ם (Abram) אֶל־ (to) ל֗וֹט (Lot), אַל־ (Not) נָ֨א (please), תְהִ֤י (let there be) מְרִיבָה֙ (strife) בֵּינִ֣י (between me) וּבֵינֶ֔יךָ (and between you), וּבֵ֥ין (and between) רֹעַ֖י (my shepherds) וּבֵ֣ין (and between) רֹעֶ֑יךָ (your shepherds), כִּֽי־ (for) אֲנָשִׁ֥ים (men) אַחִ֖ים (brothers) אֲנָֽחְנוּ׃ (we are).

9 הֲלֹ֤א (Is not) כָל־ (all) הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ (the land) לְפָנֶ֔יךָ (before you)? הִפָּ֥רֶד (Separate), נָ֖א (please), מֵעָלָ֑י (from me). אִם־ (If) הַשְּׂמֹ֣אל (to the left), וְאֵימִ֔נָה (and I will go to the right); וְאִם־ (and if) הַיָּמִ֖ין (to the right), וְאַשְׂמְאִֽילָה׃ (and I will go to the left).

Lot Proceeds toward Sodom

10 וַיִּשָּׂא־ (And lifted up) ל֣וֹט (Lot) אֶת־ (-) עֵינָ֗יו (his eyes), וַיַּרְא֙ (and he saw) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) כִּכַּ֣ר (the plain) הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן (of the Jordan), כִּ֥י (for) כֻלָּ֖הּ (all of it) מַשְׁקֶ֑ה (was well watered) לִפְנֵ֣י׀ (before) שַׁחֵ֣ת (destroyed) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) סְדֹם֙ (Sodom) וְאֶת־ (and) עֲמֹרָ֔ה (Gomorrah)— כְּגַן־ (like the garden) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH), כְּאֶ֣רֶץ (like the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt)— בֹּאֲכָ֖ה (as you go) צֹֽעַר׃ (toward Zoar).

11 וַיִּבְחַר־ (And chose) ל֣וֹ (for himself) ל֗וֹט (Lot) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (all) כִּכַּ֣ר (the plain) הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן (of the Jordan), וַיִּסַּ֥ע (and journeyed) ל֖וֹט (Lot) מִקֶּ֑דֶם (toward the east). וַיִּפָּ֣רְד֔וּ (And they separated) אִ֖ישׁ (a man) מֵעַ֥ל (from) אָחִֽיו׃ (his brother).

12 אַבְרָ֖ם (Abram) יָשַׁ֣ב (dwelt) בְּאֶֽרֶץ־ (in the land) כְּנָ֑עַן (of Canaan), וְל֗וֹט (and Lot) יָשַׁב֙ (dwelt) בְּעָרֵ֣י (in the cities) הַכִּכָּ֔ר (of the plain), וַיֶּאֱהַ֖ל (and he pitched his tent) עַד־ (toward) סְדֹֽם׃ (Sodom).

13 וְאַנְשֵׁ֣י (And the men) סְדֹ֔ם (of Sodom) רָעִ֖ים (were wicked) וְחַטָּאִ֑ים (and sinful) לַיהוָ֖ה (before YHWH) מְאֹֽד׃ (exceedingly).

God Renews the Promise to Abram

14 וַֽיהוָ֞ה (And YHWH) אָמַ֣ר (said) אֶל־ (to) אַבְרָ֗ם (Abram) אַחֲרֵי֙ (after) הִפָּֽרֶד־ (had separated) ל֣וֹט (Lot) מֵֽעִמּ֔וֹ (from him), שָׂ֣א (Lift up) נָ֤א (now) עֵינֶ֙יךָ֙ (your eyes), וּרְאֵ֔ה (and look) מִן־ (from) הַמָּק֖וֹם (the place) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) אַתָּ֣ה (you) שָׁ֑ם (are there) צָפֹ֥נָה (northward), וָנֶ֖גְבָּה (and southward), וָקֵ֥דְמָה (and eastward), וָיָֽמָּה׃ (and westward).

15 כִּ֧י (For) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הָאָ֛רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) אַתָּ֥ה (you) רֹאֶ֖ה (are seeing), לְךָ֣ (to you) אֶתְּנֶ֑נָּה (I give) וּֽלְזַרְעֲךָ֖ (and your seed) עַד־ (unto) עוֹלָֽם׃ (eternity).

16 וְשַׂמְתִּ֥י (And I will make) אֶֽת־ (-) זַרְעֲךָ֖ (your seed) כַּעֲפַ֣ר (as the dust) הָאָ֑רֶץ (of the earth), אֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ (so that) אִם־ (if) יוּכַ֣ל (is able) אִ֗ישׁ (a man) לִמְנוֹת֙ (to number) אֶת־ (-) עֲפַ֣ר (the dust) הָאָ֔רֶץ (of the earth), גַּֽם־ (then also) זַרְעֲךָ֖ (your seed) יִמָּנֶֽה׃ (could be numbered).

17 ק֚וּם (Arise), הִתְהַלֵּ֣ךְ (walk) בָּאָ֔רֶץ (in the land) לְאָרְכָּ֖הּ (through its length) וּלְרָחְבָּ֑הּ (and its width), כִּ֥י (for) לְךָ֖ (to you) אֶתְּנֶֽנָּה׃ (I give it).

18 וַיֶּאֱהַ֣ל (And moved his tent) אַבְרָ֗ם (Abram), וַיָּבֹ֛א (and he went) וַיֵּ֛שֶׁב (and dwelt) בְּאֵלֹנֵ֥י (by the Oaks) מַמְרֵ֖א (of Mamre) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which are) בְּחֶבְר֑וֹן (in Hebron), וַיִּֽבֶן־ (and he built) שָׁ֥ם (there) מִזְבֵּ֖חַ (an altar) לַֽיהוָֽה׃פ (to YHWH).
