Jeremiah Taken to Egypt

1  וַיְהִי֩ (And it came to pass that), כְּכַלּ֨וֹת (when had stopped) יִרְמְיָ֜הוּ (Jeremiah) לְדַבֵּ֣ר (speaking) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֗ם (the people) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) דִּבְרֵי֙ (the words) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֔ם (their God), אֲשֶׁ֧ר (which) שְׁלָח֛וֹ (had sent him) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֖ם (their God) אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם (to them) אֵ֥ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַדְּבָרִ֖ים (the words), הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ס (these). 2  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And spoke) עֲזַרְיָ֤ה (that Azariah) בֶן־ (son) הוֹשַֽׁעְיָה֙ (of Hoshaiah), וְיוֹחָנָ֣ן (and Johanan) בֶּן־ (son) קָרֵ֔חַ (of Kareah), וְכָל־ (and all) הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים (the men), הַזֵּדִ֑ים (arrogant) אֹמְרִ֣ים (saying) אֶֽל־ (to) יִרְמְיָ֗הוּ (Jeremiah), שֶׁ֚קֶר (Falsehood)! אַתָּ֣ה (You) מְדַבֵּ֔ר (are speaking) לֹ֣א (not) שְׁלָחֲךָ֞ (has sent you) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ (our God) לֵאמֹ֔ר (to say), לֹֽא־ (Do not) תָבֹ֥אוּ (go) מִצְרַ֖יִם (to Egypt) לָג֥וּר (to dwell) שָֽׁם׃ (there); 3  כִּ֗י (for) בָּרוּךְ֙ (Baruch) בֶּן־ (son) נֵ֣רִיָּ֔ה (of Neriah) מַסִּ֥ית (has been inciting) אֹתְךָ֖ (you) בָּ֑נוּ (against us) לְמַעַן֩ (in order) תֵּ֨ת (to give) אֹתָ֤נוּ (us) בְיַֽד־ (into the hand) הַכַּשְׂדִּים֙ (of the Chaldeans), לְהָמִ֣ית (to put to death) אֹתָ֔נוּ (us) וּלְהַגְל֥וֹת (or to carry away captive) אֹתָ֖נוּ (us) בָּבֶֽל׃ (to Babylon).

4  וְלֹֽא־ (And not) שָׁמַע֩ (would listen) יוֹחָנָ֨ן (Johanan) בֶּן־ (son) קָרֵ֜חַ (of Kareah), וְכָל־ (and all) שָׂרֵ֧י (the captains) הַחֲיָלִ֛ים (of the forces), וְכָל־ (and all) הָעָ֖ם (the people), בְּק֣וֹל (to the voice) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), לָשֶׁ֖בֶת (to dwell) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah). 5  וַיִּקַּ֞ח (And took) יוֹחָנָ֤ן (Johanan) בֶּן־ (son) קָרֵ֙חַ֙ (of Kareah), וְכָל־ (and all) שָׂרֵ֣י (the captains) הַחֲיָלִ֔ים (of the forces), אֵ֖ת (-) כָּל־ (all) שְׁאֵרִ֣ית (the remnant) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), אֲשֶׁר־ (those who) שָׁ֗בוּ (had returned) מִכָּל־ (from all) הַגּוֹיִם֙ (the nations), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (to which) נִדְּחוּ־ (they had been driven), שָׁ֔ם (there) לָג֖וּר (to dwell) בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah); 6  אֶֽת־ (-) הַ֠גְּבָרִים (the men), וְאֶת־ (and) הַנָּשִׁ֣ים (the women), וְאֶת־ (and) הַטַּף֮ (the sons), וְאֶת־ (and) בְּנ֣וֹת (daughters), הַמֶּלֶךְ֒ (of the king) וְאֵ֣ת (and) כָּל־ (every) הַנֶּ֗פֶשׁ (soul) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (whom) הִנִּ֙יחַ֙ (had left) נְבוּזַרְאֲדָ֣ן (Nebuzaradan) רַב־ (the captain) טַבָּחִ֔ים (of the guards) אֶת־ (with) גְּדַלְיָ֖הוּ (Gedaliah) בֶּן־ (son) אֲחִיקָ֣ם (of Ahikam) בֶּן־ (son) שָׁפָ֑ן (of Shaphan), וְאֵת֙ (and) יִרְמְיָ֣הוּ (Jeremiah) הַנָּבִ֔יא (the prophet), וְאֶת־ (and) בָּר֖וּךְ (Baruch) בֶּן־ (son) נֵרִיָּֽהוּ׃ (of Neriah).

7  וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ (And they came to) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt); כִּ֛י (for) לֹ֥א (not) שָׁמְע֖וּ (did they listen) בְּק֣וֹל (to the voice) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH); וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ (and they came) עַד־ (as far as) תַּחְפַּנְחֵֽס׃ס (Tahpanhes).

8  וַיְהִ֤י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֶֽל־ (to) יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ (Jeremiah) בְּתַחְפַּנְחֵ֖ס (in Tahpanhes), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 9  קַ֣ח (Take) בְּיָדְךָ֞ (in your hand), אֲבָנִ֣ים (stones) גְּדֹל֗וֹת (large) וּטְמַנְתָּ֤ם (and hide them) בַּמֶּ֙לֶט֙ (in the mortar) בַּמַּלְבֵּ֔ן (in the brick), אֲשֶׁ֛ר (which is) בְּפֶ֥תַח (at the entrance to) בֵּית־ (house) פַּרְעֹ֖ה (of Pharaoh) בְּתַחְפַּנְחֵ֑ס (in Tahpanhes), לְעֵינֵ֖י (before the eyes) אֲנָשִׁ֥ים (of the men) יְהוּדִֽים׃ (of the Jews).

10  וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (And say) אֲלֵיהֶ֡ם (to them) כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַר֩ (says) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֜וֹת (Hosts), אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel); הִנְנִ֤י (Behold, I) שֹׁלֵ֙חַ֙ (am sending) וְ֠לָקַחְתִּי (and I will bring) אֶת־ (-) נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֤ר (Nebuchadnezzar) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) בָּבֶל֙ (of Babylon), עַבְדִּ֔י (My servant), וְשַׂמְתִּ֣י (and I will set) כִסְא֔וֹ (his throne) מִמַּ֛עַל (above) לָאֲבָנִ֥ים (the stones) הָאֵ֖לֶּה (these) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) טָמָ֑נְתִּי (I have hidden); וְנָטָ֥ה (and he will spread) אֶת־ (-) שַׁפְרוּרוֹ (his pavilion) עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (over them). 11  וּבָאָה (And he will come), וְהִכָּ֖ה (and he will strike) אֶת־ (-) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), אֲשֶׁ֧ר (those) לַמָּ֣וֶת (for death) לַמָּ֗וֶת (to death); וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר (and those) לַשְּׁבִי֙ (for captivity) לַשֶּׁ֔בִי (to captivity); וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and those) לַחֶ֖רֶב (for the sword) לֶחָֽרֶב׃ (to the sword).

12  וְהִצַּ֣תִּי (And I will kindle) אֵ֗שׁ (a fire) בְּבָתֵּי֙ (in the houses) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (of the gods) מִצְרַ֔יִם (of Egypt); וּשְׂרָפָ֖ם (and he will burn them) וְשָׁבָ֑ם (and carry them away captive); וְעָטָה֩ (and he will wrap himself) אֶת־ (with) אֶ֨רֶץ (the land) מִצְרַ֜יִם (of Egypt), כַּאֲשֶׁר־ (as) יַעְטֶ֤ה (wraps himself) הָֽרֹעֶה֙ (the shepherd) אֶת־ (-) בִּגְד֔וֹ (with his garment); וְיָצָ֥א (and he will go forth) מִשָּׁ֖ם (from there) בְּשָׁלֽוֹם׃ (in peace). 13  וְשִׁבַּ֗ר (And he will break) אֶֽת־ (-) מַצְּבוֹת֙ (the pillars) בֵּ֣ית (of Beth-) שֶׁ֔מֶשׁ (shemesh), אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that are) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt); וְאֶת־ (and) בָּתֵּ֥י (the houses) אֱלֹהֵֽי־ (of the gods) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt) יִשְׂרֹ֥ף (he will burn) בָּאֵֽשׁ׃ס (with fire).
