The name "Gideon" means "hewer" or "one who cuts down," reflecting his role in cutting down the enemies of Israel. Succoth, meaning "booths" or "tents," was a city east of the Jordan River. Historically, this area was significant as a place where Jacob built shelters for his livestock (Genesis 33:17).
