John 19
Literal Emphasis Translation Par ▾
1Then Pilate therefore took Jesus and flogged (scourged) [Him]. 2And the soldiers having twisted together a garland (crown) from out of thorns, put it upon his head, and threw around Him a purple (reddish-purple) robe (outer garment), 3And they came up to Him and said, Hail, King of the Jews! And they gave Him blows with the palm. 4And Pilate went outside again and says to them, Behold, I bring Him outside to you, so that you might know that I find no cause in Him. 5Therefore Jesus went outside wearing the thorny garland (crown) and the purple robe (outer garment); and he says to them, Behold the Man! 6When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out saying, Crucify! Crucify! Pilate says to them, Take Him yourselves and crucify [Him]; for I find no cause in Him. 7The Jews answered him, We have a law and according to the law, He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God.

8When Pilate therefore heard this word, he was the more afraid (fearful). 9And he went again into the praetorium and says to Jesus, From where are You? However Jesus did not give him an answer. 10Pilate therefore says to Him, Will You not speak to me? Do you not know that I have the authority to release You and I have the authority to crucify You? 11Jesus answered him, You would not have authority against Me if it were not given to you from above. Because of this, the one having delivered Me up to you has greater sin. 12From out of this Pilate sought to release Him, however the Jews cried out, saying, If you release this [Man], you are not a friend of Caesar. Everyone making himself a king speaks against Caesar.

13Therefore Pilate having heard these words brought Jesus outside and sat down upon the judgment seat at (unto) a place called The [Stone] Pavement; however, in Hebrew (Aramaic) Gabbatha: 14And it was the day of preparation of the Passover; the hour was about the sixth. And he says to the Jews, Behold your King! 15They cried out, then, Away with Him!, Away with Him! Crucify Him! Pilate says to them, Will I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king, except Caesar.

16Then therefore he delivered Him to them, so that He might be crucified. They took then Jesus.

17And bearing His own cross, He went out unto the [place] called the Place of the Skull (latin-Calvariae-Skull like Calvary) which in Hebrew (Aramaic) is called Golgotha; 18Where they crucified Him and two others with Him, [one] on this side and [one] on that side and Jesus in the middle. 19And Pilate also wrote a title and put it upon the cross. And it was written, Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. 20This title therefore many of the Jews read, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew (Aramaic), in Latin, in Greek. 21The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, Do not write, The King of the Jews, but that He said, I am King of the Jews. 22Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written.

23The soldiers then, when they crucified Jesus took His outer garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic (latin-tunicam-coat, under-garment worn next to the skin). However the tunic was seamless, woven through the whole from out of the top. 24They said therefore to one another, let us not tear it up, but let us cast lots for it, whose it will be; so that the Scripture might be fulfilled that said, They divided My outer garments among them, and upon My clothing they cast a lot. For the soldiers therefore did these things. 25And had been standing close beside the cross, His mother and the sister of His mother, Mary the wife of Clopas and Mary Magdalene. 26Jesus therefore having seen His mother and the disciple standing by whom He loved, says to His mother, Woman, behold, your son. 27Then He says to the disciple, Behold your mother. And from that there hour the disciple took her unto his own [home].

28After this, Jesus knowing that all things now had been accomplished (finished, fulfilled, consummated), so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He says, I thirst. 29A vessel had been set there full of vinegar (oxos- sour wine, latin-aceto-vinegar thus acetic acid which is the main ingredient in vinegar- acetic acid is produced by the fermentation of ethanol by acetic acid bacteria, common drink of Roman soldiers, given as a cheap painkiller to people condemned to crucifixion); a sponge then filled with sour wine (vinegar), having put on a stalk of hyssop (used by Hebrews in ritual sprinklings), they brought it to His mouth. 30When therefore Jesus took the sour wine (vinegar), He said, It has been finished; and having bowed His head, He yielded (delivered) up His spirit.

31Therefore the Jews, because it was the Preparation, so that the bodies might not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath- for that there day was a great Sabbath- asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and they might be taken away. 32The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first and of the other having been crucified with Him; 33However having come upon Jesus, when they saw He was already dead, they did not break His legs. 34But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear and at once (directly) blood and water came out. 35And the one having seen has borne witness, and his testimony is true, and he knows that he is speaking the truth, so that you might also believe. 36For these things happened so that the Scripture might be fulfilled, Not one bone of Him will be broken. 37And again another Scripture says, They will look unto the One they have pierced.

38And after these things, Joseph from Arimathaea- being a disciple of Jesus, however concealed through the fear of the Jews- asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: Pilate gave permission. He came then and took away His body. ounces). 39And Nicodemus also, the one having come to Him by night at the first, came, bearing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred litras (about 75lbs., a Roman pound/litra was about 12 ounces). 40They took therefore the body of Jesus and bound it in linen clothes with the spices (perfumes), just as it is a custom among the Jews to prepare for burial. 41And there was in the place where He was crucified a garden and in the garden a new tomb in which no one was yet laid. 42There therefore on account of the Preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was near, they laid Jesus.
