The Soldiers Mock Jesus
(Matthew 27:27–31; Mark 15:16–20; Luke 22:63–65)

1Then Pilate order'd Jesus to be scourged. 2and the soldiers having made a crown of thorns, they put it on his head, and threw a purple robe about him. 3hail king of the Jews! said they, and struck him on the cheeks. 4Pilate therefore went out again, and said to them, observe, I bring him out to you, to acquaint you that I find no fault in him. 5so Jesus marched out wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe, and Pilate said to them, here's the man. 6as soon as the chief priests and officers saw him, they cried out, "crucify him, crucify him." Pilate said to them, take him yourselves, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him. 7the Jews answered him, we have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he pretended to be the son of God.

8Pilate upon hearing that, was still more apprehensive. 9and went again into the Pretorium, and said to Jesus, who was your father? but Jesus gave him no answer. 10then said Pilate to him, won't you give me an answer? don't you know that it is in my power to crucify you, or to release you? 11Jesus answered, you could not have any power over me, except you deriv'd it from above: therefore they who delivered me into your hands are the most culpable. 12upon this, Pilate propos'd to release him: but the Jews cried out, if you let this man go, you are not Cesar's friend: he that sets up for king, opposes Cesar.

13Pilate therefore hearing them talk at this rate, order'd Jesus to be brought forth, and then sat down in a place of Mosaic work on his tribunal, in Syriac call'd Gabbatha. 14it was then about the sixth hour of the day before the sabbath of the passover: and he said to the Jews, behold your king. 15but they cried out, away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate said to them, shall I crucify your king? the chief priests answered, we have no king but Cesar.

The Crucifixion
(Matthew 27:32–44; Mark 15:21–32; Luke 23:26–43)

16upon which he delivered him up to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took Jesus and led him away.

17and he bearing his cross, marched out to a place called the skull, which is in the Syriac, Golgotha: where they crucified him, 18and two others with him, one on each side, and Jesus in the middle. 19and Pilate caused an inscription to be put over the cross, in these words, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. 20now this inscription was read by many of the Jews: for Jesus was crucified nigh the city: and it was written in Syriac, Greek, and Latin. 21thereupon the chief priests of the Jews went to Pilate, saying, don't write, "The king of the Jews;" but that he said, I am king of the Jews. 22Pilate answered, what I have writ, I have writ.

23The soldiers, after they had crucified Jesus, took his garments (and made four parts, to every soldier a part) and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. 24they said therefore among themselves, let us not rent it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: so that the scripture was fulfilled, which said, "they parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots." this was what the soldiers actually did. 25In the mean time the mother of Jesus, and her sister Mary, the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene, were standing by the cross. 26when Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing by, he said to his mother, woman, behold thy son. 27then he said to the disciple, behold thy mother, and from that time the disciple took her to his own home.

The Death of Jesus
(Matthew 27:45–56; Mark 15:33–41; Luke 23:44–49)

28after this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be be fulfilled, said, I thirst. 29now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon a stick of hyssop, and held it to his mouth. 30when Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, it is finished: and bowing his head, he expir'd.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

31Now for fear the bodies should remain upon the cross on the sabbath-day, for it was then the eve of the pascal-sabbath, a day of high solemnity, the Jews desired Pilate that their legs might be broke, and that they might be taken away. 32accordingly the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him. 33then they came to Jesus, and finding that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34but one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and immediately blood and water issued out. 35he that relates this, was an eye-witness of it, and his relation is true: and he is so assured, what he says is true, that you may rely upon it. 36for these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, "a bone of him shall not be broken." 37and again the scripture saith elsewhere, "they shall look on him whom they pierced."

The Burial of Jesus
(Matthew 27:57–61; Mark 15:42–47; Luke 23:50–56)

38after this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but for fear of the Jews a conceal'd one, pray'd Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave: so he went and took the body of Jesus. 39Nicodemus, who formerly went to Jesus by night, came likewise and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. 40they took therefore the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, according to the manner of burial among the Jews. 41now near the place where he was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, in which no body had ever yet been laid. 42as this sepulchre was nigh at hand, they laid Jesus therein, because the time of the preparation of the Jews was expiring.
