Then Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through.1He entered Jericho and was passing through.
And there was a man named Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector, who was very wealthy.2And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich.
He was trying to see who Jesus was, but could not see over the crowd because he was small in stature.3And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature.
So he ran on ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see Him, since Jesus was about to pass that way.4So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was about to pass that way.
When Jesus came to that place, He looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, hurry down, for I must stay at your house today.”5And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.”
So Zacchaeus hurried down and welcomed Him joyfully.6So he hurried and came down and received him joyfully.
And all who saw this began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinful man!”7And when they saw it, they all grumbled, “He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”
But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, half of my possessions I give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone, I will repay it fourfold.”8And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.”
Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham.9And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham.
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
While the people were listening to this, Jesus proceeded to tell them a parable, because He was near Jerusalem and they thought the kingdom of God would appear imminently.11As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.
So He said, “A man of noble birth went to a distant country to lay claim to his kingship and then return.12He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return.
Beforehand, he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Conduct business with this until I return,’ he said.13Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’
But his subjects hated him and sent a delegation after him to say, ‘We do not want this man to rule over us.’14But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’
When he returned from procuring his kingship, he summoned the servants to whom he had given the money, to find out what each one had earned.15When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business.
The first servant came forward and said, ‘Master, your mina has produced ten more minas.’16The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’
His master replied, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very small matter, you shall have authority over ten cities.’17And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’
The second servant came and said, ‘Master, your mina has made five minas.’18And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’
And to this one he said, ‘You shall have authority over five cities.’19And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’
Then another servant came and said, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I have laid away in a piece of cloth.20Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief;
For I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man. You withdraw what you did not deposit and reap what you did not sow.’21for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’
His master replied, ‘You wicked servant, I will judge you by your own words. So you knew that I am a harsh man, withdrawing what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?22He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?
Why then did you not deposit my money in the bank, and upon my return I could have collected it with interest?’23Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’
Then he told those standing by, ‘Take the mina from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.’24And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’
‘Master,’ they said, ‘he already has ten!’25And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’
He replied, ‘I tell you that everyone who has will be given more; but the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.26‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
And these enemies of mine who were unwilling for me to rule over them, bring them here and slay them in front of me.’ ”27But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’”
After Jesus had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.28And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
As He approached Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, He sent out two of His disciples,29When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples,
saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.30saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here.
If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying it?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ”31If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’”
So those who were sent went out and found it just as Jesus had told them.32So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them.
As they were untying the colt, its owners asked, “Why are you untying the colt?”33And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
“The Lord needs it,” they answered.34And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”
Then they led the colt to Jesus, threw their cloaks over it, and put Jesus on it.35And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it.
As He rode along, the people spread their cloaks on the road.36And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road.
And as He approached the descent from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of disciples began to praise God joyfully in a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen:37As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen,
“Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”38saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
But some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke Your disciples!”39And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.”
“I tell you,” He answered, “if they remain silent, the very stones will cry out.”40He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
As Jesus approached Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it41And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it,
and said, “If only you had known on this day what would bring you peace! But now it is hidden from your eyes.42saying, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
For the days will come upon you when your enemies will barricade you and surround you and hem you in on every side.43For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side
They will level you to the ground—you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God.”44and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”
Then Jesus entered the temple courts and began to drive out those who were selling there.45And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold,
He declared to them, “It is written: ‘My house will be a house of prayer.’ But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’ ”46saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.”
Jesus was teaching at the temple every day, but the chief priests, scribes, and leaders of the people were intent on killing Him.47And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him,
Yet they could not find a way to do so, because all the people hung on His words.48but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hanging on his words.
