On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.1But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.2And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.3but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling clothes.4While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing;
So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground. “Why are you looking for the living among the dead? ” asked the men.5and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living One among the dead?
“He is not here, but he has risen! Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee,6"He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee,
saying, ‘It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day’? ”7saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again."
And they remembered his words.8And they remembered His words,
Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven and to all the rest.9and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them were telling the apostles these things.10Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles.
But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe the women.11But these words appeared to them as nonsense, and they would not believe them.
Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths. So he went away, amazed at what had happened.12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings only; and he went away to his home, marveling at what had happened.
Now that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.13And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.
Together they were discussing everything that had taken place.14And they were talking with each other about all these things which had taken place.
And while they were discussing and arguing, Jesus himself came near and began to walk along with them.15While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them.
But they were prevented from recognizing him.16But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.
Then he asked them, “What is this dispute that you’re having with each other as you are walking? ” And they stopped walking and looked discouraged.17And He said to them, "What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?" And they stood still, looking sad.
The one named Cleopas answered him, “Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things that happened there in these days? ”18One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, "Are You the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?"
“What things? ” he asked them. So they said to him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people,19And He said to them, "What things?" And they said to Him, "The things about Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people,
and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him.20and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to the sentence of death, and crucified Him.
But we were hoping that he was the one who was about to redeem Israel. Besides all this, it’s the third day since these things happened.21"But we were hoping that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened.
Moreover, some women from our group astounded us. They arrived early at the tomb,22"But also some women among us amazed us. When they were at the tomb early in the morning,
and when they didn’t find his body, they came and reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive.23and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive.
Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”24"Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also had said; but Him they did not see."
He said to them, “How foolish and slow you are to believe all that the prophets have spoken!25And He said to them, "O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!
Wasn’t it necessary for the Messiah to suffer these things and enter into his glory? ”26"Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?"
Then beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted for them the things concerning himself in all the Scriptures.27Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
They came near the village where they were going, and he gave the impression that he was going farther.28And they approached the village where they were going, and He acted as though He were going farther.
But they urged him, “Stay with us, because it’s almost evening, and now the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.29But they urged Him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is getting toward evening, and the day is now nearly over." So He went in to stay with them.
It was as he reclined at the table with them that he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.30When He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it, and breaking it, He began giving it to them.
Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight.31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight.
They said to each other, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us while he was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us? ”32They said to one another, "Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?"
That very hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven and those with them gathered together,33And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found gathered together the eleven and those who were with them,
who said, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon! ”34saying, "The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon."
Then they began to describe what had happened on the road and how he was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.35They began to relate their experiences on the road and how He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.
As they were saying these things, he himself stood in their midst. He said to them, “Peace to you! ”36While they were telling these things, He Himself stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be to you."
But they were startled and terrified and thought they were seeing a ghost.37But they were startled and frightened and thought that they were seeing a spirit.
“Why are you troubled? ” he asked them. “And why do doubts arise in your hearts?38And He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts?
Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself! Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.”39"See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have."
Having said this, he showed them his hands and feet.40And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.
But while they still were amazed and in disbelief because of their joy, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat? ”41While they still could not believe it because of their joy and amazement, He said to them, "Have you anything here to eat?"
So they gave him a piece of a broiled fish,42They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish;
and he took it and ate in their presence.43and He took it and ate it before them.
He told them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you --that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”44Now He said to them, "These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled."
Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.45Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,
He also said to them, “This is what is written: The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day,46and He said to them, "Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day,
and repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.47and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
You are witnesses of these things.48"You are witnesses of these things.
And look, I am sending you what my Father promised. As for you, stay in the city until you are empowered from on high.”49"And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."
Then he led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them.50And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them.
And while he was blessing them, he left them and was carried up into heaven.51While He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.
After worshiping him, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.52And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
And they were continually in the temple praising God.53and were continually in the temple praising God.
