Holman Christian Standard BibleNew International Version
As He was going out of the temple complex, one of His disciples said to Him, "Teacher, look! What massive stones! What impressive buildings!" 1As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!"
Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here on another that will not be thrown down!" 2"Do you see all these great buildings?" replied Jesus. "Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down."
While He was sitting on the Mount of Olives across from the temple complex, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately, "3As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John and Andrew asked him privately,
Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign when all these things are about to take place?" 4"Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are all about to be fulfilled?"
Then Jesus began by telling them: "Watch out that no one deceives you. 5Jesus said to them: "Watch out that no one deceives you.
Many will come in My name, saying, I am He,' and they will deceive many. 6Many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am he,' and will deceive many.
When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, don't be alarmed; these things must take place, but the end is not yet. 7When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.
For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains. 8Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains.
"But you, be on your guard! They will hand you over to sanhedrins, and you will be flogged in the synagogues. You will stand before governors and kings because of Me, as a witness to them.9"You must be on your guard. You will be handed over to the local councils and flogged in the synagogues. On account of me you will stand before governors and kings as witnesses to them.
And the good news must first be proclaimed to all nations. 10And the gospel must first be preached to all nations.
So when they arrest you and hand you over, don't worry beforehand what you will say. On the contrary, whatever is given to you in that hour--say it. For it isn't you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. 11Whenever you are arrested and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.
Then brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise up against parents and put them to death. 12"Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.
And you will be hated by everyone because of My name. But the one who endures to the end will be delivered. 13Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
"When you see the abomination that causes desolation standing where it should not" (let the reader understand), "then those in Judea must flee to the mountains! 14"When you see 'the abomination that causes desolation' standing where it does not belong--let the reader understand--then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.
A man on the housetop must not come down or go in to get anything out of his house.15Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out.
And a man in the field must not go back to get his clothes.16Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak.
Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days! 17How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers!
Pray it won't happen in winter. 18Pray that this will not take place in winter,
For those will be days of tribulation, the kind that hasn't been from the beginning of the world, which God created, until now and never will be again!19because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until now--and never to be equaled again.
Unless the Lord limited those days, no one would survive. But He limited those days because of the elect, whom He chose. 20"If the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them.
"Then if anyone tells you, Look, here is the Messiah! Look--there!' do not believe it!21At that time if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Messiah!' or, 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it.
For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and will perform signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 22For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.
And you must watch! I have told you everything in advance. 23So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.
"But in those days, after that tribulation: The sun will be darkened, and the moon will not shed its light; 24"But in those days, following that distress, "'the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will be falling from the sky, and the celestial powers will be shaken. 25the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.'
Then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.26"At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.
He will send out the angels and gather His elect from the four winds, from the end of the earth to the end of the sky. 27And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.
"Learn this parable from the fig tree: As soon as its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near.28"Now learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near.
In the same way, when you see these things happening, know that He is near--at the door! 29Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it is near, right at the door.
I assure you: This generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place. 30Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away. 31Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
"Now concerning that day or hour no one knows--neither the angels in heaven nor the Son--except the Father.32"But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
Watch! Be alert! For you don't know when the time is coming. 33Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.
It is like a man on a journey, who left his house, gave authority to his slaves, gave each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to be alert. 34It's like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.
Therefore be alert, since you don't know when the master of the house is coming--whether in the evening or at midnight or at the crowing of the rooster or early in the morning. 35"Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back--whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn.
Otherwise, he might come suddenly and find you sleeping.36If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping.
And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be alert!" 37What I say to you, I say to everyone: 'Watch!'"
