Now before the Passover Festival, Jesus realized that his hour had come to leave this world and return to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.1It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
By supper time, the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray him. 2The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus.
Because Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into his control, that he had come from God, and that he was returning to God, 3Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;
therefore he got up from the table, removed his outer robe, and took a towel and fastened it around his waist. 4so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.
Then he poured some water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to dry them with the towel that was tied around his waist.5After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
Then he came to Simon Peter, who asked him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"6He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?"
Jesus answered him, "You don't realize now what I'm doing, but later on you'll understand."7Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand."
Peter told him, "You must never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "Unless I wash you, you cannot be involved with me."8"No," said Peter, "you shall never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me."
Simon Peter told him, "Lord, not just my feet, but my hands and my head as well!"9"Then, Lord," Simon Peter replied, "not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!"
Jesus told him, "Whoever has bathed is entirely clean. He doesn't need to wash himself further, except for his feet. And you men are clean, though not all of you." 10Jesus answered, "Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you."
For he knew who was going to betray him. That's why he said, "Not all of you are clean."11For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
When Jesus had washed their feet and put on his outer robe, he sat down again and told them, "Do you realize what I've done to you? 12When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them.
You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right because that is what I am. 13"You call me 'Teacher' and 'Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am.
So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you must also wash one another's feet. 14Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet.
I've set an example for you, so that you may do as I have done to you. 15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, a servant isn't greater than his master, and a messenger isn't greater than the one who sent him. 16Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
If you understand these things, how blessed you are if you put them into practice! 17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
I'm not talking about all of you. I know the ones I have chosen. But the Scripture must be fulfilled: 'The one who ate bread with me has turned against me.'18"I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill this passage of Scripture: 'He who shared my bread has turned against me.'
I'm telling you this now, before it happens, so that when it does happen, you may believe that I AM. 19"I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am.
Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, the one who receives whomever I send receives me, and the one who receives me receives the one who sent me."20Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me."
After saying this, Jesus was deeply troubled in spirit and declared solemnly, "Truly, I tell all of you emphatically, one of you is going to betray me!" 21After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, "Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me."
The disciples began looking at one another, completely mystified about whom he was speaking. 22His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant.
One of his disciples, the one whom Jesus kept loving, had been sitting very close to him.23One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.
So Simon Peter motioned to this man to ask Jesus about whom he was speaking. 24Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, "Ask him which one he means."
Leaning forward on Jesus' chest, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?"25Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, "Lord, who is it?"
Jesus answered, "He is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread after I have dipped it in the dish." Then he took a piece of bread, dipped it, and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.26Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
After he had taken the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus told him, "Do quickly what you are going to do!" 27As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. So Jesus told him, "What you are about to do, do quickly."
Now no one at the table knew why Jesus said this to him. 28But no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him.
Some thought that, since Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him to buy what they needed for the festival or to give something to the destitute. 29Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the festival, or to give something to the poor.
So Judas took the piece of bread, immediately went outside…and it was night.30As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.
After Judas had gone out, Jesus said, "The Son of Man is now glorified, and God has been glorified by him. 31When he was gone, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified and God is glorified in him.
If God has been glorified by him, God himself also will glorify the Son of Man, and he will do so quickly. 32If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once.
Little children, I'm with you only a little longer. You will look for me, but what I told the Jewish leaders I now tell you, 'Where I'm going, you cannot come.' 33"My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come.
I'm giving you a new commandment…to love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 34"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
This is how everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered him, "I'm going where you cannot follow me now, though you will follow me later on."36Simon Peter asked him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus replied, "Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later."
"Lord, why can't I follow you now?" Peter asked him. "I would lay down my life for you!"37Peter asked, "Lord, why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you."
Jesus answered him, "Would you lay down your life for me? I tell you emphatically, a rooster will not crow until you have denied me three times."38Then Jesus answered, "Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
