New American Standard Bible 1995 | International Standard Version |
Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. | 1Now you do not need to have anything written to you about times and dates, brothers, |
For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. | 2for you yourselves know very well that the Day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. |
While they are saying, "Peace and safety!" then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape. | 3When people say, "There is peace and security," destruction will strike them as suddenly as labor pains come to a pregnant woman, and they will not be able to escape. |
But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; | 4However, brothers, you are not in the darkness, in order that the Day of the Lord might surprise you like a thief. |
for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of darkness; | 5For all of you are children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to darkness. |
so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. | 6Therefore, let's not fall asleep like others do, but let's stay awake and be sober. |
For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get drunk at night. | 7For people who go to sleep, go to sleep at night; and people who get drunk, get drunk at night. |
But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation. | 8But since we belong to the day, let's be sober. We must put on the breastplate of faith and love, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. |
For God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, | 9For God has not destined us to receive wrath but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, |
who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. | 10who died for us in order that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. |
Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing. | 11So then, encourage one another and build each other up, as you are doing. |
But we request of you, brethren, that you appreciate those who diligently labor among you, and have charge over you in the Lord and give you instruction, | 12Brothers, we ask you to show your appreciation for those who work among you, set an example for you in the Lord, and instruct you. |
and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Live in peace with one another. | 13Hold them in the highest regard, loving them because of their work. Live in peace with each other. |
We urge you, brethren, admonish the unruly, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with everyone. | 14We urge you, brothers, to admonish those who are idle, cheer up those who are discouraged, and help those who are weak. Be patient with everyone. |
See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. | 15Make sure that no one pays back evil for evil. Instead, always pursue what is good for each other and for everyone else. |
Rejoice always; | 16Always be joyful. |
pray without ceasing; | 17Continually be prayerful. |
in everything give thanks; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. | 18In everything be thankful, because this is God's will for you in the Messiah Jesus. |
Do not quench the Spirit; | 19Do not put out the Spirit's fire. |
do not despise prophetic utterances. | 20Do not despise prophecies. |
But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; | 21Instead, test everything. Hold on to what is good. |
abstain from every form of evil. | 22Keep away from every kind of evil. |
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 23May the God of peace himself make you holy in every way. And may your whole being—spirit, soul, and body—remain blameless when our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, appears. |
Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. | 24The one who calls you is faithful, and he will continue to be faithful. |
Brethren, pray for us. | 25Brothers, pray for us. |
Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss. | 26Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. |
I adjure you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brethren. | 27I order you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. |
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. | 28May the grace of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah, be with you! Amen. |
