New American Standard Bible 1995 | New International Version |
A Prayer of Moses, the man of God. Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations. | 1A prayer of Moses the man of God. Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. |
Before the mountains were born Or You gave birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God. | 2Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. |
You turn man back into dust And say, "Return, O children of men." | 3You turn people back to dust, saying, "Return to dust, you mortals." |
For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it passes by, Or as a watch in the night. | 4A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night. |
You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep; In the morning they are like grass which sprouts anew. | 5Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death-- they are like the new grass of the morning: |
In the morning it flourishes and sprouts anew; Toward evening it fades and withers away. | 6In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered. |
For we have been consumed by Your anger And by Your wrath we have been dismayed. | 7We are consumed by your anger and terrified by your indignation. |
You have placed our iniquities before You, Our secret sins in the light of Your presence. | 8You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. |
For all our days have declined in Your fury; We have finished our years like a sigh. | 9All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. |
As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years, Or if due to strength, eighty years, Yet their pride is but labor and sorrow; For soon it is gone and we fly away. | 10Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. |
Who understands the power of Your anger And Your fury, according to the fear that is due You? | 11If only we knew the power of your anger! Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due. |
So teach us to number our days, That we may present to You a heart of wisdom. | 12Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. |
Do return, O LORD; how long will it be? And be sorry for Your servants. | 13Relent, LORD! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants. |
O satisfy us in the morning with Your lovingkindness, That we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. | 14Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. |
Make us glad according to the days You have afflicted us, And the years we have seen evil. | 15Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. |
Let Your work appear to Your servants And Your majesty to their children. | 16May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. |
Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us; And confirm for us the work of our hands; Yes, confirm the work of our hands. | 17May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us-- yes, establish the work of our hands. |
