"Do not let your hearts be distressed. You believe in God; believe also in me. | 1 “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. |
There are many dwelling places in my Father's house. Otherwise, I would have told you, because I am going away to make ready a place for you. | 2 There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? |
And if I go and make ready a place for you, I will come again and take you to be with me, so that where I am you may be too. | 3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. |
And you know the way where I am going." | 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” |
Thomas said, "Lord, we don't know where you are going. How can we know the way?" | 5“No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?” |
Jesus replied, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. | 6Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. |
If you have known me, you will know my Father too. And from now on you do know him and have seen him." | 7 If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!” |
Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be content." | 8Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” |
Jesus replied, "Have I been with you for so long, and you have not known me, Philip? The person who has seen me has seen the Father! How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? | 9Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you? |
Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you, I do not speak on my own initiative, but the Father residing in me performs his miraculous deeds. | 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. |
Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me, but if you do not believe me, believe because of the miraculous deeds themselves. | 11 Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. Or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do. |
I tell you the solemn truth, the person who believes in me will perform the miraculous deeds that I am doing, and will perform greater deeds than these, because I am going to the Father. | 12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. |
And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. | 13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. |
If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. | 14 Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it! Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit |
"If you love me, you will obey my commandments. | 15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. |
Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever-- | 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. |
the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he resides with you and will be in you. | 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. |
"I will not abandon you as orphans, I will come to you. | 18 No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you. |
In a little while the world will not see me any longer, but you will see me; because I live, you will live too. | 19 Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you also will live. |
You will know at that time that I am in my Father and you are in me and I am in you. | 20 When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. |
The person who has my commandments and obeys them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will reveal myself to him." | 21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.” |
"Lord," Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, "what has happened that you are going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?" | 22Judas (not Judas Iscariot, but the other disciple with that name) said to him, “Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us and not to the world at large?” |
Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up residence with him. | 23Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. |
The person who does not love me does not obey my words. And the word you hear is not mine, but the Father's who sent me. | 24 Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. |
"I have spoken these things while staying with you. | 25 I am telling you these things now while I am still with you. |
But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and will cause you to remember everything I said to you. | 26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you. |
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; I do not give it to you as the world does. Do not let your hearts be distressed or lacking in courage. | 27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. |
You heard me say to you, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am. | 28 Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, who is greater than I am. |
I have told you now before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe. | 29 I have told you these things before they happen so that when they do happen, you will believe. |
I will not speak with you much longer, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no power over me, | 30 “I don’t have much more time to talk to you, because the ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me, |
but I am doing just what the Father commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Get up, let us go from here." | 31 but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father. Come, let’s be going. |
