Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribal families of Israel | 1Then the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites came to Eleazar the priest and to Joshua the son of Nun and to the heads of the fathers’ houses of the tribes of the people of Israel. |
at Shiloh in Canaan and said to them, "The LORD commanded through Moses that you give us towns to live in, with pasturelands for our livestock." | 2And they said to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, “The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities to dwell in, along with their pasturelands for our livestock.” |
So, as the LORD had commanded, the Israelites gave the Levites the following towns and pasturelands out of their own inheritance: | 3So by command of the LORD the people of Israel gave to the Levites the following cities and pasturelands out of their inheritance. |
The first lot came out for the Kohathites, according to their clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest were allotted thirteen towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon and Benjamin. | 4The lot came out for the clans of the Kohathites. So those Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest received by lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin, thirteen cities. |
The rest of Kohath's descendants were allotted ten towns from the clans of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan and half of Manasseh. | 5And the rest of the Kohathites received by lot from the clans of the tribe of Ephraim, from the tribe of Dan and the half-tribe of Manasseh, ten cities. |
The descendants of Gershon were allotted thirteen towns from the clans of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan. | 6The Gershonites received by lot from the clans of the tribe of Issachar, from the tribe of Asher, from the tribe of Naphtali, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities. |
The descendants of Merari, according to their clans, received twelve towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad and Zebulun. | 7The Merarites according to their clans received from the tribe of Reuben, the tribe of Gad, and the tribe of Zebulun, twelve cities. |
So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these towns and their pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded through Moses. | 8These cities and their pasturelands the people of Israel gave by lot to the Levites, as the LORD had commanded through Moses. |
From the tribes of Judah and Simeon they allotted the following towns by name | 9Out of the tribe of the people of Judah and the tribe of the people of Simeon they gave the following cities mentioned by name, |
(these towns were assigned to the descendants of Aaron who were from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because the first lot fell to them): | 10which went to the descendants of Aaron, one of the clans of the Kohathites who belonged to the people of Levi; since the lot fell to them first. |
They gave them Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron), with its surrounding pastureland, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the forefather of Anak.) | 11They gave them Kiriath-arba (Arba being the father of Anak), that is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, along with the pasturelands around it. |
But the fields and villages around the city they had given to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession. | 12But the fields of the city and its villages had been given to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as his possession. |
So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron (a city of refuge for one accused of murder), Libnah, | 13And to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron, the city of refuge for the manslayer, with its pasturelands, Libnah with its pasturelands, |

And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave them Gibeon, Geba, | 17then out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its pasturelands, Geba with its pasturelands, |
Anathoth and Almon, together with their pasturelands--four towns. | 18Anathoth with its pasturelands, and Almon with its pasturelands—four cities. |
The total number of towns for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, came to thirteen, together with their pasturelands. | 19The cities of the descendants of Aaron, the priests, were in all thirteen cities with their pasturelands. |
The rest of the Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted towns from the tribe of Ephraim: | 20As to the rest of the Kohathites belonging to the Kohathite clans of the Levites, the cities allotted to them were out of the tribe of Ephraim. |
In the hill country of Ephraim they were given Shechem (a city of refuge for one accused of murder) and Gezer, | 21To them were given Shechem, the city of refuge for the manslayer, with its pasturelands in the hill country of Ephraim, Gezer with its pasturelands, |

So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there. | 43Thus the LORD gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give to their fathers. And they took possession of it, and they settled there. |
The LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the LORD gave all their enemies into their hands. | 44And the LORD gave them rest on every side just as he had sworn to their fathers. Not one of all their enemies had withstood them, for the LORD had given all their enemies into their hands. |
Not one of all the LORD's good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled. | 45Not one word of all the good promises that the LORD had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass. |
