One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.1Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret;
He saw at the water's edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.2and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets.
He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.3And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat.
When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch."4When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, "Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch."
Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets."5Simon answered and said, "Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets."
When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.6When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break;
So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.7so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink.
When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!"8But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus' feet, saying, "Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!"
For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken,9For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken;
and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will fish for people."10and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men."
So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.11When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.
While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean."12While He was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man covered with leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and implored Him, saying, "Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean."
Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!" And immediately the leprosy left him.13And He stretched out His hand and touched him, saying, "I am willing; be cleansed." And immediately the leprosy left him.
Then Jesus ordered him, "Don't tell anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them."14And He ordered him to tell no one, "But go and show yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing, just as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."
Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses.15But the news about Him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses.
But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.16But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.
One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.17One day He was teaching; and there were some Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was present for Him to perform healing.
Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus.18And some men were carrying on a bed a man who was paralyzed; and they were trying to bring him in and to set him down in front of Him.
When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.19But not finding any way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down through the tiles with his stretcher, into the middle of the crowd, in front of Jesus.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said, "Friend, your sins are forgiven."20Seeing their faith, He said, "Friend, your sins are forgiven you."
The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, "Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?"21The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, "Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?"
Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, "Why are you thinking these things in your hearts?22But Jesus, aware of their reasonings, answered and said to them, "Why are you reasoning in your hearts?
Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'?23"Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins have been forgiven you,' or to say, 'Get up and walk '?
But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." So he said to the paralyzed man, "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home."24"But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,"-- He said to the paralytic-- "I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home."
Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God.25Immediately he got up before them, and picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God.
Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, "We have seen remarkable things today."26They were all struck with astonishment and began glorifying God; and they were filled with fear, saying, "We have seen remarkable things today."
After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. "Follow me," Jesus said to him,27After that He went out and noticed a tax collector named Levi sitting in the tax booth, and He said to him, "Follow Me."
and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.28And he left everything behind, and got up and began to follow Him.
Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors and others were eating with them.29And Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a great crowd of tax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them.
But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?"30The Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling at His disciples, saying, "Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?"
Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.31And Jesus answered and said to them, "It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick.
I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."32"I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance."
They said to him, "John's disciples often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking."33And they said to Him, "The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do the same, but Yours eat and drink."
Jesus answered, "Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?34And Jesus said to them, "You cannot make the attendants of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them, can you?
But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast."35"But the days will come; and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days."
He told them this parable: "No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old.36And He was also telling them a parable: "No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old.
And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined.37"And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined.
No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins.38"But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.
And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, 'The old is better.'"39"And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, 'The old is good enough.'"
