| 1One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels. | 1Now it happened that He was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath; and His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating the grain. |
| 2Some of the Pharisees asked, "Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?" | 2But some of the Pharisees said, "Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?" |
| 3Jesus answered them, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? | 3And Jesus answering them said, "Have you not even read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, |
| 4He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions." | 4how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the consecrated bread which is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?" |
| 5Then Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." | 5And He was saying to them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." |
| 6On another Sabbath he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. | 6On another Sabbath He entered the synagogue and was teaching; and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. |
| 7The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath. | 7The scribes and the Pharisees were watching Him closely to see if He healed on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse Him. |
| 8But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, "Get up and stand in front of everyone." | 9Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?" | 9And Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?" |
| 10He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand was completely restored. | 10After looking around at them all, He said to him, "Stretch out your hand!" And he did so; and his hand was restored. |
| 11But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus. | 11But they themselves were filled with rage, and discussed together what they might do to Jesus. |

| 17He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon, | 17Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place; and there was a large crowd of His disciples, and a great throng of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the coastal region of Tyre and Sidon, |
| 18who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, | 18who had come to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were being cured. |
| 19and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all. | 19And all the people were trying to touch Him, for power was coming from Him and healing them all. |
| 20Looking at his disciples, he said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. | 20And turning His gaze toward His disciples, He began to say, "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. |

| 23"Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets. | 23"Be glad in that day and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For in the same way their fathers used to treat the prophets. |
| 24"But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. | 24"But woe to you who are rich, for you are receiving your comfort in full. |

| 35But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. | 35"But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men. |

| 41"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? | 41"Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? |
| 42How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,' when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye. | 42"Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye. |
| 43"No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. | 43"For there is no good tree which produces bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree which produces good fruit. |
| 44Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. | 44"For each tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. |
| 45A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. | 49But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete." | 49"But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great." |
