Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, | 1Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness |
where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry. | 2for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He became hungry. |
The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread." | 3And the devil said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread." |
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone.'" | 4And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE.'" |
The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. | 5And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. |
And he said to him, "I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. | 6And the devil said to Him, "I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. |
If you worship me, it will all be yours." | 7"Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours." |
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'" | 8Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD AND SERVE HIM ONLY.'" |
The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down from here. | 9And he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here; |
For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully; | 10for it is written, 'HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU TO GUARD YOU,' |
they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" | 11and, 'ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'" |
Jesus answered, "It is said: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" | 12And Jesus answered and said to him, "It is said, 'YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.'" |
When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time. | 13When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time. |
Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. | 14And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district. |
He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. | 15And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all. |
He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, | 16And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. |
and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: | 17And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, |
"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, | 18"THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED, |
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." | 19TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD." |
Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. | 20And He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. |
He began by saying to them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." | 21And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." |
All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. "Isn't this Joseph's son?" they asked. | 22And all were speaking well of Him, and wondering at the gracious words which were falling from His lips; and they were saying, "Is this not Joseph's son?" |
Jesus said to them, "Surely you will quote this proverb to me: 'Physician, heal yourself!' And you will tell me, 'Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.'" | 23And He said to them, "No doubt you will quote this proverb to Me, 'Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we heard was done at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.'" |
"Truly I tell you," he continued, "no prophet is accepted in his hometown. | 24And He said, "Truly I say to you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown. |
I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. | 25"But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land; |
Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. | 26and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. |
And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed--only Naaman the Syrian." | 27"And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian." |
All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. | 28And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things; |
They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. | 29and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff. |
But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way. | 30But passing through their midst, He went His way. |
Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. | 31And He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and He was teaching them on the Sabbath; |
They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority. | 32and they were amazed at His teaching, for His message was with authority. |
In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, | 33In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, |
"Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!" | 34"Let us alone! What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are-- the Holy One of God!" |
"Be quiet!" Jesus said sternly. "Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him. | 35But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet and come out of him!" And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the people, he came out of him without doing him any harm. |
All the people were amazed and said to each other, "What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!" | 36And amazement came upon them all, and they began talking with one another saying, "What is this message? For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits and they come out." |
And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area. | 37And the report about Him was spreading into every locality in the surrounding district. |
Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. | 38Then He got up and left the synagogue, and entered Simon's home. Now Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Him to help her. |
So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them. | 39And standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she immediately got up and waited on them. |
At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. | 40While the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and laying His hands on each one of them, He was healing them. |
Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, "You are the Son of God!" But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah. | 41Demons also were coming out of many, shouting, "You are the Son of God!" But rebuking them, He would not allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ. |
At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. | 42When day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place; and the crowds were searching for Him, and came to Him and tried to keep Him from going away from them. |
But he said, "I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent." | 43But He said to them, "I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose." |
And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea. | 44So He kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea. |
