New King James Version | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
“You shall not see your brother’s ox or his sheep going astray, and hide yourself from them; you shall certainly bring them back to your brother. | 1If you see your brother's ox or sheep straying, you must not ignore it; make sure you return it to your brother. |
And if your brother is not near you, or if you do not know him, then you shall bring it to your own house, and it shall remain with you until your brother seeks it; then you shall restore it to him. | 2If your brother does not live near you or you don't know him, you are to bring the animal to your home to remain with you until your brother comes looking for it; then you can return it to him. |
You shall do the same with his donkey, and so shall you do with his garment; with any lost thing of your brother’s, which he has lost and you have found, you shall do likewise; you must not hide yourself. | 3Do the same for his donkey, his garment, or anything your brother has lost and you have found. You must not ignore it. |
“You shall not see your brother’s donkey or his ox fall down along the road, and hide yourself from them; you shall surely help him lift them up again. | 4If you see your brother's donkey or ox fallen down on the road, you must not ignore it; you must help him lift it up." |
“A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the LORD your God. | 5A woman is not to wear male clothing, and a man is not to put on a woman's garment, for everyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD your God." |
“If a bird’s nest happens to be before you along the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, with the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young; | 6If you come across a bird's nest with chicks or eggs, either in a tree or on the ground along the road, and the mother is sitting on the chicks or eggs, you must not take the mother along with the young. |
you shall surely let the mother go, and take the young for yourself, that it may be well with you and that you may prolong your days. | 7You may take the young for yourself, but be sure to let the mother go free, so that you may prosper and live long. |
“When you build a new house, then you shall make a parapet for your roof, that you may not bring guilt of bloodshed on your household if anyone falls from it. | 8If you build a new house, make a railing around your roof, so that you don't bring bloodguilt on your house if someone falls from it. |
“You shall not sow your vineyard with different kinds of seed, lest the yield of the seed which you have sown and the fruit of your vineyard be defiled. | 9Do not plant your vineyard with two types of seed; otherwise, the entire harvest, both the crop you plant and the produce of the vineyard, will be defiled. |
“You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together. | 10Do not plow with an ox and a donkey together. |
“You shall not wear a garment of different sorts, such as wool and linen mixed together. | 11Do not wear clothes made of both wool and linen. |
“You shall make tassels on the four corners of the clothing with which you cover yourself. | 12Make tassels on the four corners of the outer garment you wear." |
“If any man takes a wife, and goes in to her, and detests her, | 13If a man marries a woman, has sexual relations with her, and comes to hate her, |
and charges her with shameful conduct, and brings a bad name on her, and says, ‘I took this woman, and when I came to her I found she was not a virgin,’ | 14and accuses her of shameful conduct, and gives her a bad name, saying, 'I married this woman and was intimate with her, but I didn't find any evidence of her virginity,' |
then the father and mother of the young woman shall take and bring out the evidence of the young woman’s virginity to the elders of the city at the gate. | 15the young woman's father and mother will take the evidence of her virginity and bring it to the city elders at the gate. |
And the young woman’s father shall say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man as wife, and he detests her. | 16The young woman's father will say to the elders, 'I gave my daughter to this man as a wife, but he hates her. |
Now he has charged her with shameful conduct, saying, “I found your daughter was not a virgin,” and yet these are the evidences of my daughter’s virginity.’ And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city. | 17He has accused her of shameful conduct, saying: "I didn't find any evidence of your daughter's virginity," but here is the evidence of my daughter's virginity.' They will spread out the cloth before the city elders. |
Then the elders of that city shall take that man and punish him; | 18Then the elders of that city will take the man and punish him. |
and they shall fine him one hundred shekels of silver and give them to the father of the young woman, because he has brought a bad name on a virgin of Israel. And she shall be his wife; he cannot divorce her all his days. | 19They will also fine him 100 silver shekels and give them to the young woman's father, because that man gave an Israelite virgin a bad name. She will remain his wife; he cannot divorce her as long as he lives. |
“But if the thing is true, and evidences of virginity are not found for the young woman, | 20But if this accusation is true and no evidence of the young woman's virginity is found, |
then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done a disgraceful thing in Israel, to play the harlot in her father’s house. So you shall put away the evil from among you. | 21they will bring the woman to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city will stone her to death. For she has committed an outrage in Israel by being promiscuous in her father's house. You must purge the evil from you." |
“If a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then both of them shall die—the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; so you shall put away the evil from Israel. | 22If a man is discovered having sexual relations with another man's wife, both the man who had sex with the woman and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel. |
“If a young woman who is a virgin is betrothed to a husband, and a man finds her in the city and lies with her, | 23If there is a young woman who is a virgin engaged to a man, and another man encounters her in the city and has sex with her, |
then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry out in the city, and the man because he humbled his neighbor’s wife; so you shall put away the evil from among you. | 24you must take the two of them out to the gate of that city and stone them to death--the young woman because she did not cry out in the city and the man because he has violated his neighbor's fiancee. You must purge the evil from you. |
“But if a man finds a betrothed young woman in the countryside, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die. | 25But if the man encounters an engaged woman in the open country, and he seizes and rapes her, only the man who raped her must die. |
But you shall do nothing to the young woman; there is in the young woman no sin deserving of death, for just as when a man rises against his neighbor and kills him, even so is this matter. | 26Do nothing to the young woman, because she is not guilty of an offense deserving death. This case is just like one in which a man attacks his neighbor and murders him. |
For he found her in the countryside, and the betrothed young woman cried out, but there was no one to save her. | 27When he found her in the field, the engaged woman cried out, but there was no one to rescue her. |
“If a man finds a young woman who is a virgin, who is not betrothed, and he seizes her and lies with her, and they are found out, | 28If a man encounters a young woman, a virgin who is not engaged, takes hold of her and rapes her, and they are discovered, |
then the man who lay with her shall give to the young woman’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife because he has humbled her; he shall not be permitted to divorce her all his days. | 29the man who raped her must give the young woman's father 50 silver shekels, and she must become his wife because he violated her. He cannot divorce her as long as he lives." |
“A man shall not take his father’s wife, nor uncover his father’s bed. | 30A man is not to marry his father's wife; he must not violate his father's marriage bed." |
