| 1“You shall not see your brother’s ox or his sheep going astray, and hide yourself from them; you shall certainly bring them back to your brother. | 1When you see your neighbor's ox or sheep going astray, do not ignore it; you must return it without fail to your neighbor. |
| 2And if your brother is not near you, or if you do not know him, then you shall bring it to your own house, and it shall remain with you until your brother seeks it; then you shall restore it to him. | 2If the owner does not live near you or you do not know who the owner is, then you must corral the animal at your house and let it stay with you until the owner looks for it; then you must return it to him. |
| 3You shall do the same with his donkey, and so shall you do with his garment; with any lost thing of your brother’s, which he has lost and you have found, you shall do likewise; you must not hide yourself. | 3You shall do the same to his donkey, his clothes, or anything else your neighbor has lost and you have found; you must not refuse to get involved. |
| 4“You shall not see your brother’s donkey or his ox fall down along the road, and hide yourself from them; you shall surely help him lift them up again. | 4When you see your neighbor's donkey or ox fallen along the road, do not ignore it; instead, you must be sure to help him get the animal on its feet again. |
| 5“A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman’s garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the LORD your God. | 5A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor should a man dress up in women's clothing, for anyone who does this is offensive to the LORD your God. |
| 6“If a bird’s nest happens to be before you along the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, with the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young; | 6If you happen to notice a bird's nest along the road, whether in a tree or on the ground, and there are chicks or eggs with the mother bird sitting on them, you must not take the mother from the young. |
| 7you shall surely let the mother go, and take the young for yourself, that it may be well with you and that you may prolong your days. | 7You must be sure to let the mother go, but you may take the young for yourself. Do this so that it may go well with you and you may have a long life. |
| 8“When you build a new house, then you shall make a parapet for your roof, that you may not bring guilt of bloodshed on your household if anyone falls from it. | 8If you build a new house, you must construct a guard rail around your roof to avoid being culpable in the event someone should fall from it. |
| 9“You shall not sow your vineyard with different kinds of seed, lest the yield of the seed which you have sown and the fruit of your vineyard be defiled. | 9You must not plant your vineyard with two kinds of seed; otherwise the entire yield, both of the seed you plant and the produce of the vineyard, will be defiled. |
| 10“You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together. | 10You must not plow with an ox and a donkey harnessed together. |
| 11“You shall not wear a garment of different sorts, such as wool and linen mixed together. | 11You must not wear clothing made with wool and linen meshed together. |
| 12“You shall make tassels on the four corners of the clothing with which you cover yourself. | 12You shall make yourselves tassels for the four corners of the clothing you wear. |
| 13“If any man takes a wife, and goes in to her, and detests her, | 13Suppose a man marries a woman, has sexual relations with her, and then rejects her, |
| 14and charges her with shameful conduct, and brings a bad name on her, and says, ‘I took this woman, and when I came to her I found she was not a virgin,’ | 14accusing her of impropriety and defaming her reputation by saying, "I married this woman but when I had sexual relations with her I discovered she was not a virgin!" |
| 15then the father and mother of the young woman shall take and bring out the evidence of the young woman’s virginity to the elders of the city at the gate. | 15Then the father and mother of the young woman must produce the evidence of virginity for the elders of the city at the gate. |
| 16And the young woman’s father shall say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man as wife, and he detests her. | 16The young woman's father must say to the elders, "I gave my daughter to this man and he has rejected her. |
| 17Now he has charged her with shameful conduct, saying, “I found your daughter was not a virgin,” and yet these are the evidences of my daughter’s virginity.’ And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city. | 17Moreover, he has raised accusations of impropriety by saying, 'I discovered your daughter was not a virgin,' but this is the evidence of my daughter's virginity!" The cloth must then be spread out before the city's elders. |
| 18Then the elders of that city shall take that man and punish him; | 18The elders of that city must then seize the man and punish him. |
| 19and they shall fine him one hundred shekels of silver and give them to the father of the young woman, because he has brought a bad name on a virgin of Israel. And she shall be his wife; he cannot divorce her all his days. | 19They will fine him one hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman's father, for the man who made the accusation ruined the reputation of an Israelite virgin. She will then become his wife and he may never divorce her as long as he lives. |
| 20“But if the thing is true, and evidences of virginity are not found for the young woman, | 20But if the accusation is true and the young woman was not a virgin, |
| 21then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done a disgraceful thing in Israel, to play the harlot in her father’s house. So you shall put away the evil from among you. | 21the men of her city must bring the young woman to the door of her father's house and stone her to death, for she has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by behaving like a prostitute while living in her father's house. In this way you will purge evil from among you. |
| 22“If a man is found lying with a woman married to a husband, then both of them shall die—the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; so you shall put away the evil from Israel. | 22If a man is caught having sexual relations with a married woman both the man who had relations with the woman and the woman herself must die; in this way you will purge evil from Israel. |
| 23“If a young woman who is a virgin is betrothed to a husband, and a man finds her in the city and lies with her, | 23If a virgin is engaged to a man and another man meets her in the city and has sexual relations with her, |
| 24then you shall bring them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall stone them to death with stones, the young woman because she did not cry out in the city, and the man because he humbled his neighbor’s wife; so you shall put away the evil from among you. | 24you must bring the two of them to the gate of that city and stone them to death, the young woman because she did not cry out though in the city and the man because he violated his neighbor's fiancee; in this way you will purge evil from among you. |
| 25“But if a man finds a betrothed young woman in the countryside, and the man forces her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall die. | 25But if the man came across the engaged woman in the field and overpowered her and raped her, then only the rapist must die. |
| 26But you shall do nothing to the young woman; there is in the young woman no sin deserving of death, for just as when a man rises against his neighbor and kills him, even so is this matter. | 26You must not do anything to the young woman--she has done nothing deserving of death. This case is the same as when someone attacks another person and murders him, |
| 27For he found her in the countryside, and the betrothed young woman cried out, but there was no one to save her. | 27for the man met her in the field and the engaged woman cried out, but there was no one to rescue her. |
| 28“If a man finds a young woman who is a virgin, who is not betrothed, and he seizes her and lies with her, and they are found out, | 28Suppose a man comes across a virgin who is not engaged and overpowers and rapes her and they are discovered. |
| 29then the man who lay with her shall give to the young woman’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife because he has humbled her; he shall not be permitted to divorce her all his days. | 29The man who has raped her must pay her father fifty shekels of silver and she must become his wife because he has violated her; he may never divorce her as long as he lives. |
| 30“A man shall not take his father’s wife, nor uncover his father’s bed. | 30A man may not marry his father's former wife and in this way dishonor his father. |
