In biblical terms, the concept of a "compact" often refers to an agreement, covenant, or binding promise between parties. This idea is deeply rooted in the biblical narrative, where covenants play a central role in the relationship between God and humanity, as well as among individuals and nations.

Covenants in the Bible

The Bible is replete with examples of covenants, which can be understood as divine compacts. These covenants are foundational to the biblical account, illustrating God's promises and expectations for His people. One of the earliest and most significant covenants is the one God made with Noah after the flood. In Genesis 9:11 , God declares, "I establish My covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth."

Another pivotal compact is the Abrahamic Covenant, where God promises Abraham that he will be the father of a great nation. Genesis 17:2 states, "I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and I will multiply you exceedingly." This covenant is marked by the sign of circumcision and is foundational to the identity of the Israelites as God's chosen people.

The Mosaic Covenant, given at Mount Sinai, is another critical compact. It includes the Ten Commandments and the laws that would govern the Israelites. In Exodus 19:5 , God says, "Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, you will be My treasured possession out of all the nations—for the whole earth is Mine."

New Covenant

The New Testament introduces the concept of the New Covenant, a compact established through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This covenant is foretold in the Old Testament, as seen in Jeremiah 31:31 : "Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah." The New Covenant is characterized by the internalization of God's law and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, as described in Hebrews 8:10 : "This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord. I will put My laws in their minds and inscribe them on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people."

Human Compacts

In addition to divine covenants, the Bible also records human compacts, agreements made between individuals or groups. One example is the covenant between David and Jonathan, which is a model of friendship and loyalty. In 1 Samuel 18:3 , it is written, "Then Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself."

Another example is the treaty between Solomon and Hiram, king of Tyre, which facilitated the building of the Temple. In 1 Kings 5:12 , it states, "So the LORD gave Solomon wisdom, as He had promised him. And there was peace between Hiram and Solomon, and the two of them made a treaty."

Theological Significance

The concept of a compact in the Bible underscores the importance of faithfulness, trust, and commitment. Covenants are not merely legal agreements but are deeply relational, involving promises and responsibilities. They reflect God's unchanging nature and His desire for a relationship with humanity. The biblical narrative demonstrates that while humans often fail to uphold their end of the compact, God remains faithful to His promises, ultimately fulfilling them through Jesus Christ.

COMPACT; COMPACTED

kom-pakt', kom-pakt'-ed (chabhar, "to be joined"; sumbibazo, "to raise up together"): "Compact" appears as translation of chabhar in Psalm 122:3, "Jerus. a city that is compact together" (well built, its breaches restored, walls complete, and separate from all around it); and "compacted" (sumbibazo) occurs in the King James Version Ephesians 4:16, "fitly joined together and compacted," the Revised Version (British and American) "fitly framed and knit together." In the Revised Version (British and American) "compacted" is also the translation of sunistemi, "to set together" (2 Peter 3:5), "an earth compacted out of water and amidst (margin, through) water," which suggests the idea of water as the primary material (compare Genesis 1:2).
