Birth and Early LifeJesus, known as the Christ, is central to Christian theology and history. His birth is recorded in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, which provide genealogies tracing His lineage to King David, fulfilling Old Testament prophecies (
Matthew 1:1-17;
Luke 3:23-38). The angel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive by the Holy Spirit, and she gave birth to Jesus in Bethlehem (
Luke 1:26-35; 2:4-7). This event fulfilled the prophecy of
Micah 5:2, which foretold the Messiah's birth in Bethlehem.
The visit of the Magi, guided by a star, and the subsequent flight to Egypt to escape King Herod's massacre of infants, are significant events in His early life (
Matthew 2:1-16). After Herod's death, Jesus' family returned to Nazareth, where He grew up (
Matthew 2:19-23).
MinistryJesus began His public ministry around the age of thirty, following His baptism by John the Baptist in the Jordan River (
Luke 3:21-23). This event marked the beginning of His ministry, as the Holy Spirit descended upon Him, and a voice from heaven declared, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased" (
Luke 3:22).
His ministry lasted approximately three years, during which He preached the Kingdom of God, performed miracles, and taught with authority. Jesus' teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), emphasized love, forgiveness, and righteousness. He performed numerous miracles, including healing the sick, raising the dead, and feeding thousands (
Matthew 14:13-21;
John 11:1-44).
Jesus also selected twelve apostles to follow Him closely and to be His witnesses (
Mark 3:13-19). His ministry often challenged the religious leaders of the time, leading to increasing tension and opposition.
Death and ResurrectionThe culmination of Jesus' earthly ministry was His crucifixion, a pivotal event in Christian theology. Betrayed by Judas Iscariot, one of His apostles, Jesus was arrested, tried, and sentenced to death by crucifixion under the Roman governor Pontius Pilate (
Matthew 26:47-27:26). His death is seen as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies, such as
Isaiah 53, which describe the suffering servant.
Jesus' crucifixion took place at Golgotha, where He was mocked and crucified between two criminals (
Matthew 27:33-44). His death is central to the Christian understanding of atonement, as He bore the sins of humanity (
1 Peter 2:24).
On the third day after His death, Jesus rose from the dead, an event celebrated as the Resurrection (
Matthew 28:1-10). The Resurrection is foundational to Christian faith, as it demonstrates Jesus' victory over sin and death. He appeared to His disciples and many others over a period of forty days, providing them with final teachings and commissioning them to spread the Gospel (
Acts 1:3-8).
Ascension and Ongoing InfluenceJesus' ascension into heaven occurred forty days after His resurrection. He was taken up before the eyes of His disciples, who were promised the coming of the Holy Spirit to empower them for their mission (
Acts 1:9-11). The ascension signifies Jesus' exaltation and His ongoing intercessory role at the right hand of the Father (
Hebrews 7:25).
The impact of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection continues to shape Christian doctrine and practice. His teachings and the message of salvation through faith in Him are central to the New Testament writings and the mission of the Church. Jesus is recognized as the Messiah, the Son of God, and the Savior of the world, whose return is anticipated by believers (
Revelation 22:12-13).
