Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, was the eleventh king of the northern kingdom of Israel. His reign is chronicled in the biblical narrative found in
2 Kings 13:1-9. Jehoahaz ascended to the throne in the twenty-third year of Joash, king of Judah, and he reigned for seventeen years in Samaria.
Reign and Religious PracticesJehoahaz's reign was marked by a continuation of the idolatrous practices initiated by Jeroboam I, the first king of the divided northern kingdom. The biblical account in
2 Kings 13:2 states, "He did evil in the sight of the LORD and followed the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit, and he did not turn away from them." This persistent idolatry provoked the anger of the LORD, leading to significant consequences for Jehoahaz and his kingdom.
Oppression by AramDuring Jehoahaz's reign, Israel faced severe oppression from Hazael, king of Aram, and his son Ben-Hadad. The Arameans inflicted heavy losses on Israel, reducing its military strength significantly. The biblical text in
2 Kings 13:7 records, "Nothing was left of the army of Jehoahaz except fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had destroyed them and made them like the dust at threshing."
Supplication and DeliveranceDespite his idolatrous practices, Jehoahaz sought the LORD's favor during this time of distress.
2 Kings 13:4 notes, "Then Jehoahaz sought the favor of the LORD, and the LORD listened to him, for He saw the oppression of Israel, how the king of Aram had oppressed them." In response to Jehoahaz's supplication, the LORD provided a deliverer for Israel, allowing them to escape from the hand of the Arameans and dwell in their homes as before.
Legacy and DeathJehoahaz's reign, though marked by military weakness and idolatry, also demonstrated the LORD's mercy in response to genuine supplication. His death is recorded in
2 Kings 13:9, "And Jehoahaz rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria. And his son Jehoash reigned in his place." Jehoahaz's legacy is a testament to the enduring consequences of idolatry and the LORD's willingness to deliver His people when they turn to Him in earnest prayer.
Jehoahaz's reign serves as a reminder of the importance of faithfulness to the LORD and the dangers of leading a nation into idolatry. His account is a part of the larger narrative of the kings of Israel, illustrating the cyclical nature of sin, judgment, supplication, and deliverance that characterized the history of the northern kingdom.
