Revenge: Forbidden by Our Lord

Revenge, the act of retaliating or seeking retribution for a wrong suffered, is a concept addressed directly by the teachings of Jesus Christ and throughout the New Testament. The Christian doctrine, as derived from the Scriptures, emphasizes forgiveness, love, and leaving judgment to God, rather than pursuing personal vengeance.

Teachings of Jesus

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus explicitly forbids revenge, urging His followers to adopt a posture of non-retaliation and love towards their enemies. In Matthew 5:38-39 , Jesus states, "You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also." This teaching overturns the Old Testament principle of lex talionis, or the law of retaliation, which was intended to limit vengeance and ensure justice. Jesus calls His followers to a higher standard of conduct, one that reflects the grace and mercy of God.

Further, in Matthew 5:43-44 , Jesus commands, "You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." This radical love and forgiveness are central to the Christian ethic, demonstrating the transformative power of the Gospel.

Apostolic Teachings

The apostles echo Jesus' teachings on revenge, reinforcing the call to leave vengeance to God. In Romans 12:17-19 , the Apostle Paul writes, "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone. Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: 'Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.'" Paul emphasizes that God is the ultimate judge and avenger, and believers are to trust in His justice rather than taking matters into their own hands.

Similarly, in 1 Peter 3:9 , the Apostle Peter instructs, "Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing." This teaching aligns with the broader New Testament message that Christians are called to be a blessing to others, even in the face of wrongdoing.

Old Testament Context

While the Old Testament contains instances of God-sanctioned justice and retribution, it also lays the groundwork for the New Testament's teachings on revenge. Leviticus 19:18 commands, "Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against any of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD." This commandment underscores the continuity of God's desire for His people to practice love and forgiveness.

Practical Implications

The prohibition of revenge has profound implications for Christian conduct. Believers are called to embody the love and forgiveness of Christ in their interactions with others, trusting in God's ultimate justice. This teaching challenges Christians to rise above the natural inclination for retribution and to reflect the character of Christ in all circumstances.
