Revenge: Instead of Taking, we should Overcome Others by Kindness

Revenge, the act of retaliating against someone for a perceived wrong, is a concept that is addressed multiple times in the Bible. The Scriptures consistently teach that vengeance belongs to God and that believers are called to respond to wrongdoing with kindness and love, rather than seeking personal retribution.

Old Testament Insights

The Old Testament lays the foundation for understanding God's perspective on revenge. In Deuteronomy 32:35, God declares, "Vengeance is Mine; I will repay." This statement underscores the belief that God is the ultimate judge and arbiter of justice. Human attempts at revenge are seen as usurping God's role and often lead to further sin and discord.

Proverbs 20:22 advises, "Do not say, 'I will avenge this evil!' Wait on the LORD, and He will deliver you." This wisdom literature emphasizes patience and trust in God's timing and justice, rather than taking matters into one's own hands.

New Testament Teachings

The New Testament further develops the theme of overcoming evil with good. Jesus Christ, in His Sermon on the Mount, teaches a radical approach to dealing with enemies: "But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5:44). This commandment challenges believers to rise above the natural inclination for revenge and instead respond with love and prayer.

The Apostle Paul echoes this teaching in Romans 12:17-21, where he writes, "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone. Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: 'Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.' On the contrary, 'If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. For in so doing, you will heap burning coals on his head.' Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." This passage not only discourages revenge but also encourages proactive kindness as a means of overcoming evil.

The Example of Christ

Jesus Christ Himself exemplified the principle of overcoming evil with good. Despite being wronged, mocked, and crucified, He did not seek revenge. Instead, He prayed for His persecutors, saying, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" (Luke 23:34). His life and sacrifice serve as the ultimate model for believers, demonstrating that true strength lies in forgiveness and love.

Practical Application

In practical terms, overcoming others by kindness involves a conscious decision to act in love, even when wronged. It requires a heart transformed by the Holy Spirit, enabling believers to extend grace and mercy. This approach not only aligns with biblical teachings but also has the power to transform relationships and communities, reflecting the love of Christ to a watching world.

By choosing kindness over revenge, believers testify to their faith in God's justice and sovereignty, trusting that He will right all wrongs in His perfect timing.
