Revenge: Jesus an Example of Forbearing

Revenge, the act of retaliating or seeking retribution for a wrong suffered, is a common human impulse. However, the teachings and life of Jesus Christ provide a profound example of forbearance and forgiveness, challenging believers to rise above the natural inclination for vengeance.

Old Testament Context

The Old Testament law, particularly in the Mosaic Law, includes the principle of "an eye for an eye" (Exodus 21:24), which was intended to limit retribution and ensure justice was proportionate. This principle, known as lex talionis, was a legal standard to prevent excessive punishment and personal vendettas. However, it was often misinterpreted as a mandate for personal revenge.

Jesus' Teachings on Revenge

Jesus Christ, in His Sermon on the Mount, redefined the understanding of justice and personal conduct. In Matthew 5:38-39 , He states, "You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also." Here, Jesus calls His followers to a higher standard of behavior, emphasizing non-retaliation and the power of meekness.

Jesus further instructs in Matthew 5:44 , "But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you." This radical command to love and pray for one's enemies underscores the transformative power of forgiveness and the rejection of revenge.

Jesus' Example of Forbearance

Throughout His life and ministry, Jesus exemplified forbearance in the face of provocation and injustice. One of the most poignant examples is found during His crucifixion. Despite the mockery, physical abuse, and wrongful accusations, Jesus did not retaliate. Instead, He prayed for His persecutors, saying, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" (Luke 23:34). This act of forgiveness, even in the midst of suffering, highlights Jesus' commitment to mercy over vengeance.

Apostolic Teachings on Revenge

The apostles, following Jesus' example, continued to teach against revenge. The Apostle Paul, in Romans 12:17-19 , writes, "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone. Do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but leave room for God’s wrath. For it is written: 'Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.'" Paul emphasizes that vengeance belongs to God, and believers are called to live peaceably and trust in God's justice.

Similarly, the Apostle Peter encourages believers to follow Christ's example, stating in 1 Peter 2:21-23 , "For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His footsteps: 'He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.' When they heaped abuse on Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats, but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly."

Conclusion

The life and teachings of Jesus Christ provide a compelling model of forbearance, urging believers to forsake revenge and embrace forgiveness. By following His example, Christians are called to reflect God's grace and mercy in a world often driven by retribution.
