Amaziah Reigns in Judah
(2 Kings 14:1–7)

1  בֶּן־ (A son) עֶשְׂרִ֨ים (of twenty) וְחָמֵ֤שׁ (and five) שָׁנָה֙ (years) מָלַ֣ךְ (he became king) אֲמַצְיָ֔הוּ (Amaziah was), וְעֶשְׂרִ֣ים (and twenty) וָתֵ֙שַׁע֙ (and nine) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother) יְהוֹעַדָּ֖ן (was Jehoaddan) מִירוּשָׁלָֽיִם׃ (of Jerusalem). 2  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And he did) הַיָּשָׁ֖ר (right) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), רַ֕ק (but) לֹ֖א (not) בְּלֵבָ֥ב (with a heart) שָׁלֵֽם׃ (perfect).

3  וַיְהִ֕י (And it came to pass), כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר (when) חָזְקָ֥ה (was strong) הַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה (the kingdom) עָלָ֑יו (for him), וַֽיַּהֲרֹג֙ (that he killed) אֶת־ (-) עֲבָדָ֔יו (his servants) הַמַּכִּ֖ים (who had struck) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (the king) אָבִֽיו׃ (his father). 4  וְאֶת־ (And) בְּנֵיהֶ֖ם (their sons) לֹ֣א (not) הֵמִ֑ית (he did kill), כִּ֣י (but did) כַכָּת֣וּב (as it is written) בַּתּוֹרָ֡ה (in the Law), בְּסֵ֣פֶר (in the Book) מֹשֶׁה֩ (of Moses), אֲשֶׁר־ (where) צִוָּ֨ה (commanded) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying): לֹא־ (Not) יָמ֨וּתוּ (shall be put to death) אָב֤וֹת (fathers) עַל־ (for) בָּנִים֙ (their sons), וּבָנִים֙ (and sons) לֹא־ (not) יָמ֣וּתוּ (shall be put to death) עַל־ (for) אָב֔וֹת (their fathers), כִּ֛י (but) אִ֥ישׁ (each man) בְּחֶטְא֖וֹ (for his own sin) יָמֽוּתוּ׃פ (shall die).

Amaziah’s Victories

5  וַיִּקְבֹּ֤ץ (And gathered together) אֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ (Amaziah) אֶת־ (-) יְהוּדָ֔ה (Judah) וַיַּֽעֲמִידֵ֣ם (and he appointed them) לְבֵית־ (according to the house) אָב֗וֹת (of the fathers) לְשָׂרֵ֤י (captains) הָאֲלָפִים֙ (of the thousands) וּלְשָׂרֵ֣י (and captains) הַמֵּא֔וֹת (of the hundreds) לְכָל־ (throughout all) יְהוּדָ֖ה (Judah) וּבִנְיָמִ֑ן (and Benjamin). וַֽיִּפְקְדֵ֗ם (And he numbered them) לְמִבֶּ֨ן (from) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (twenty) שָׁנָה֙ (years) וָמַ֔עְלָה (and above), וַיִּמְצָאֵ֗ם (and found them to be) שְׁלֹשׁ־ (three) מֵא֨וֹת (hundred) אֶ֤לֶף (thousand) בָּחוּר֙ (chosen ones) יוֹצֵ֣א (going forth) צָבָ֔א (to the host), אֹחֵ֖ז (holding) רֹ֥מַח (spear) וְצִנָּֽה׃ (and shield).

6  וַיִּשְׂכֹּ֣ר (And He hired) מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (from Israel) מֵ֥אָה (a hundred) אֶ֛לֶף (thousand) גִּבּ֥וֹר (mighty men) חָ֖יִל (of valor) בְּמֵאָ֥ה (for a hundred) כִכַּר־ (talents) כָּֽסֶף׃ (of silver). 7  וְאִ֣ישׁ (And a man) הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים (of God) בָּ֤א (came) אֵלָיו֙ (to him), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), הַמֶּ֕לֶךְ (O king), אַל־ (not) יָבֹ֥א (do let go) עִמְּךָ֖ (with you) צְבָ֣א (the host) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), כִּ֣י (for) אֵ֤ין (is not) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) עִם־ (with) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) כֹּ֖ל (or any) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) אֶפְרָֽיִם׃ (of Ephraim). 8  כִּ֚י (But) אִם־ (if) בֹּ֣א (are going) אַתָּ֔ה (you), עֲשֵׂ֖ה (do it)— חֲזַ֣ק (be strong) לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה (in the battle); יַכְשִֽׁילְךָ֤ (shall make you fall) הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ (God) לִפְנֵ֣י (before) אוֹיֵ֔ב (the enemy), כִּ֥י (for) יֶשׁ־ (is) כֹּ֛חַ (power) בֵּאלֹהִ֖ים (unto God) לַעְז֥וֹר (to help) וּלְהַכְשִֽׁיל׃ (and to cause to stumble).

9  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ (Amaziah) לְאִ֣ישׁ (to the man) הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God), וּמַֽה־ (And what) לַּעֲשׂוֹת֙ (to do) לִמְאַ֣ת (about hundred) הַכִּכָּ֔ר (the talents) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) נָתַ֖תִּי (I have given) לִגְד֣וּד (to the troops) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel)?

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And answered) אִ֣ישׁ (the man) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God), יֵ֚שׁ (Is able) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (YHWH) לָ֥תֶת (to give) לְךָ֖ (to you) הַרְבֵּ֥ה (more) מִזֶּֽה׃ (than this).

10  וַיַּבְדִּילֵ֣ם (And separated) אֲמַצְיָ֗הוּ (Amaziah) לְהַגְּדוּד֙ (the troops) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) בָּ֤א (had come) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) מֵֽאֶפְרַ֔יִם (from Ephraim) לָלֶ֖כֶת (to go back) לִמְקוֹמָ֑ם (to their own place). וַיִּ֨חַר (And was kindled) אַפָּ֤ם (their anger) מְאֹד֙ (greatly) בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה (against Judah), וַיָּשׁ֥וּבוּ (and they returned) לִמְקוֹמָ֖ם (to their place) בָּחֳרִי־ (in the heat) אָֽף׃פ (of anger).

11  וַאֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ (And Amaziah) הִתְחַזַּ֔ק (strengthened himself) וַיִּנְהַג֙ (and led forth) אֶת־ (-) עַמּ֔וֹ (his people), וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ (and he went) גֵּ֣יא (to the Valley) הַמֶּ֑לַח (of Salt) וַיַּ֥ךְ (and he struck down) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵי־ (of the sons) שֵׂעִ֖יר (of Seir) עֲשֶׂ֥רֶת (ten) אֲלָפִֽים׃ (thousand), 12  וַעֲשֶׂ֨רֶת (and ten) אֲלָפִ֜ים (thousand) חַיִּ֗ים (alive) שָׁבוּ֙ (took captive) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), וַיְבִיא֖וּם (and they brought them) לְרֹ֣אשׁ (to the top) הַסָּ֑לַע (of the rock), וַיַּשְׁלִיכ֛וּם (and they cast them down) מֵֽרֹאשׁ־ (from the top) הַסֶּ֖לַע (of the rock), וְכֻלָּ֥ם (and all of them) נִבְקָֽעוּ׃ס (were dashed to pieces).

13  וּבְנֵ֣י (And the sons) הַגְּד֗וּד (of the troop) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) הֵשִׁ֤יב (has sent back) אֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ (Amaziah) מִלֶּ֤כֶת (so that they would not go) עִמּוֹ֙ (with him) לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה (to the battle), וַֽיִּפְשְׁטוּ֙ (and they raided) בְּעָרֵ֣י (the cities) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) מִשֹּׁמְר֖וֹן (from Samaria) וְעַד־ (and to) בֵּ֣ית (Beth-) חוֹר֑וֹן (horon), וַיַּכּ֤וּ (and they struck down) מֵהֶם֙ (in them) שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת (three) אֲלָפִ֔ים (thousand) וַיָּבֹ֖זּוּ (and they plundered) בִּזָּ֥ה (spoil) רַבָּֽה׃ס (much).

Amaziah Rebuked for Idolatry

14  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass), אַחֲרֵ֨י (after) ב֤וֹא (came) אֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ (Amaziah) מֵֽהַכּ֣וֹת (from the striking) אֶת־ (-) אֲדוֹמִ֔ים (of the Edomites), וַיָּבֵ֗א (that he brought) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהֵי֙ (the gods) בְּנֵ֣י (of the sons) שֵׂעִ֔יר (of Seir) וַיַּֽעֲמִידֵ֥ם (and set them up as) ל֖וֹ (his) לֵאלֹהִ֑ים (gods), וְלִפְנֵיהֶ֥ם (and before them) יִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֖ה (he bowed down), וְלָהֶ֥ם (and to them) יְקַטֵּֽר׃ (he burned incense). 15  וַיִּֽחַר־ (And burned) אַ֥ף (the anger) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) בַּאֲמַצְיָ֑הוּ (against Amaziah), וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח (and He sent) אֵלָיו֙ (to him) נָבִ֔יא (a prophet), וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said) ל֗וֹ (to him), לָ֤מָּה (Why) דָרַ֙שְׁתָּ֙ (have you sought) אֶת־ (-) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the gods) הָעָ֔ם (of the people), אֲשֶׁ֛ר (which) לֹא־ (not) הִצִּ֥ילוּ (could deliver) אֶת־ (-) עַמָּ֖ם (their own people) מִיָּדֶֽךָ׃ (from your hand)?

16  וַיְהִ֣י׀ (And it came to pass), בְּדַבְּר֣וֹ (in his speaking) אֵלָ֗יו (to him) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (that he said) לוֹ֙ (to him), הַלְיוֹעֵ֤ץ (To counsel) לַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (the king) נְתַנּ֔וּךָ (have we appointed you)? חֲדַל־ (Cease) לְךָ֖ (you)! לָ֣מָּה (Why) יַכּ֑וּךָ (should they strike you down)?

וַיֶּחְדַּ֣ל (And ceased) הַנָּבִ֗יא (the prophet) וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and said), יָדַ֗עְתִּי (I know) כִּֽי־ (that) יָעַ֤ץ (has counseled) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) לְהַשְׁחִיתֶ֔ךָ (to destroy you) כִּֽי־ (because) עָשִׂ֣יתָ (you have done) זֹּ֔את (this) וְלֹ֥א (and not) שָׁמַ֖עְתָּ (have heeded) לַעֲצָתִֽי׃פ (my counsel).

Jehoash Defeats Amaziah
(2 Kings 14:8–14)

17  וַיִּוָּעַ֗ץ (And took counsel) אֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ (Amaziah) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) וַ֠יִּשְׁלַח (and sent) אֶל־ (to) יוֹאָ֨שׁ (Joash) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹאָחָ֧ז (of Jehoahaz), בֶּן־ (son) יֵה֛וּא (of Jehu), מֶ֥לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), לְךָ (Come), נִתְרָאֶ֥ה (let us look one another) פָנִֽים׃ (in the face).

18  וַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח (And sent) יוֹאָ֣שׁ (Joash) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel) אֶל־ (to) אֲמַצְיָ֣הוּ (Amaziah) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָה֮ (of Judah), לֵאמֹר֒ (saying), הַח֜וֹחַ (The thistle) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) בַּלְּבָנ֗וֹן (in Lebanon) שָׁ֠לַח (sent) אֶל־ (to) הָאֶ֜רֶז (the cedar) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that was) בַּלְּבָנוֹן֙ (in Lebanon), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), תְּנָֽה־ (Give) אֶת־ (-) בִּתְּךָ֥ (your daughter) לִבְנִ֖י (to my son) לְאִשָּׁ֑ה (as wife). וַֽתַּעֲבֹ֞ר (And passed by) חַיַּ֤ת (a beast) הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (wild) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) בַּלְּבָנ֔וֹן (in Lebanon), וַתִּרְמֹ֖ס (and trampled) אֶת־ (-) הַחֽוֹחַ׃ (the thistle). 19  אָמַ֗רְתָּ (You say), הִנֵּ֤ה (Behold), הִכִּ֙יתָ֙ (you have struck down) אֶת־ (-) אֱד֔וֹם (Edom)! וּנְשָׂאֲךָ֥ (And has lifted you) לִבְּךָ֖ (your heart) לְהַכְבִּ֑יד (to boast). עַתָּה֙ (Now) שְׁבָ֣ה (dwell) בְּבֵיתֶ֔ךָ (in your house); לָ֤מָּה (why) תִתְגָּרֶה֙ (should you stir up) בְּרָעָ֔ה (trouble), וְנָ֣פַלְתָּ֔ (that you should fall)— אַתָּ֖ה (you) וִיהוּדָ֥ה (and Judah) עִמָּֽךְ׃ (with you).

20  וְלֹא־ (Not) שָׁמַ֣ע (would listen) אֲמַצְיָ֔הוּ (Amaziah), כִּ֤י (for) מֵהָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ (from God) הִ֔יא (it was) לְמַ֖עַן (that), תִּתָּ֣ם (He might give them) בְּיָ֑ד (into the hand) כִּ֣י (because) דָֽרְשׁ֔וּ (they sought) אֵ֖ת (-) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the gods) אֱדֽוֹם׃ (of Edom). 21  וַיַּ֨עַל (And went out) יוֹאָ֤שׁ (Joash) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), וַיִּתְרָא֣וּ (and they looked one another) פָנִ֔ים (in the faces)— ה֖וּא (he) וַאֲמַצְיָ֣הוּ (and Amaziah) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah)— בְּבֵ֥ית (at Beth-) שֶׁ֖מֶשׁ (shemesh), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which is) לִיהוּדָֽה׃ (unto Judah). 22  וַיִּנָּ֥גֶף (And was defeated) יְהוּדָ֖ה (Judah) לִפְנֵ֣י (by) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ (and fled) אִ֥ישׁ (each man) לְאֹהָלָֽיו׃ (to his tent).

23  וְאֵת֩ (And) אֲמַצְיָ֨הוּ (Amaziah) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָ֜ה (of Judah), בֶּן־ (son) יוֹאָ֣שׁ (of Joash), בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹאָחָ֗ז (of Jehoahaz), תָּפַ֛שׂ (captured) יוֹאָ֥שׁ (Joash) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בְּבֵ֣ית (in Beth-) שָׁ֑מֶשׁ (shemesh).

וַיְבִיאֵ֙הוּ֙ (And he brought him) יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (to Jerusalem) וַיִּפְרֹ֞ץ (and broke down) בְּחוֹמַ֣ת (the wall) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (of Jerusalem), מִשַּׁ֤עַר (from the Gate) אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ (of Ephraim) עַד־ (to) שַׁ֣עַר (Gate) הַפּוֹנֶ֔ה (of the Corner)— אַרְבַּ֥ע (four) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred) אַמָּֽה׃ (cubits)— 24  וְכָֽל־ (and all) הַזָּהָ֣ב (the gold) וְהַכֶּ֡סֶף (and the silver), וְאֵ֣ת (and) כָּל־ (all) הַ֠כֵּלִים (the articles) הַנִּמְצְאִ֨ים (that were found) בְּבֵית־ (in the house) הָאֱלֹהִ֜ים (of God) עִם־ (with) עֹבֵ֣ד (Obed-) אֱד֗וֹם (edom), וְאֶת־ (and) אֹצְרוֹת֙ (the treasures) בֵּ֣ית (of house) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the king), וְאֵ֖ת (and) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) הַתַּֽעֲרֻב֑וֹת (of the hostages). וַיָּ֖שָׁב (And he returned) שֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃פ (to Samaria).

The Death of Amaziah
(2 Kings 14:17–20)

25  וַיְחִ֨י (And lived) אֲמַצְיָ֤הוּ (Amaziah) בֶן־ (son) יוֹאָשׁ֙ (of Joash) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah) אַחֲרֵ֣י (after) מ֔וֹת (the death) יוֹאָ֥שׁ (of Joash) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹאָחָ֖ז (of Jehoahaz) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel) חֲמֵ֥שׁ (five) עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה (and ten) שָׁנָֽה׃ (years). 26  וְיֶ֙תֶר֙ (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֣י (of the acts) אֲמַצְיָ֔הוּ (of Amaziah), הָרִאשֹׁנִ֖ים (from the first) וְהָאַחֲרוֹנִ֑ים (and to the last), הֲלֹא֙ (are not) הִנָּ֣ם (indeed) כְּתוּבִ֔ים (they written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֥פֶר (the Book) מַלְכֵי־ (of the Kings) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) וְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (and Israel)?

27  וּמֵעֵ֗ת (And after the time) אֲשֶׁר־ (that), סָ֤ר (turned away) אֲמַצְיָ֙הוּ֙ (Amaziah) מֵאַחֲרֵ֣י (from following) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH). וַיִּקְשְׁר֨וּ (And they made) עָלָ֥יו (against him) קֶ֛שֶׁר (a conspiracy) בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (in Jerusalem), וַיָּ֣נָס (and he fled) לָכִ֑ישָׁה (to Lachish). וַיִּשְׁלְח֤וּ (And they sent) אַחֲרָיו֙ (after him) לָכִ֔ישָׁה (to Lachish) וַיְמִיתֻ֖הוּ (and they killed him) שָֽׁם׃ (there). 28  וַיִּשָּׂאֻ֖הוּ (And they brought him) עַל־ (on) הַסּוּסִ֑ים (the horses) וַֽיִּקְבְּר֥וּ (and buried) אֹת֛וֹ (him) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֖יו (his fathers) בְּעִ֥יר (in the City) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah).
