Joash Repairs the Temple
(2 Kings 12:1–16)

1  בֶּן־ (A son) שֶׁ֤בַע (of seven) שָׁנִים֙ (years) יֹאָ֣שׁ (Joash was) בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ (in his reigning), וְאַרְבָּעִ֣ים (and forty) שָׁנָ֔ה (years) מָלַ֖ךְ (he reigned) בִּֽירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם (in Jerusalem). וְשֵׁ֣ם (And the name) אִמּ֔וֹ (of his mother) צִבְיָ֖ה (was Zibiah) מִבְּאֵ֥ר (of Beer-) שָֽׁבַע׃ (sheba). 2  וַיַּ֧עַשׂ (And did) יוֹאָ֛שׁ (Joash) הַיָּשָׁ֖ר (right) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) כָּל־ (all) יְמֵ֖י (the days) יְהוֹיָדָ֥ע (of Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ (the priest). 3  וַיִּשָּׂא־ (And took) ל֥וֹ (for him) יְהוֹיָדָ֖ע (Jehoiada) נָשִׁ֣ים (wives) שְׁתָּ֑יִם (two), וַיּ֖וֹלֶד (and he begat) בָּנִ֥ים (sons) וּבָנֽוֹת׃ (and daughters).

4  וַיְהִ֖י (And it came to pass) אַחֲרֵיכֵ֑ן (after this that) הָיָה֙ (it was) עִם־ (with) לֵ֣ב (the heart) יוֹאָ֔שׁ (of Joash) לְחַדֵּ֖שׁ (to renew) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH). 5  וַיִּקְבֹּץ֮ (And he gathered) אֶת־ (-) הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים (the priests) וְהַלְוִיִּם֒ (and the Levites) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said) לָהֶ֡ם (to them), צְא֣וּ (Go out) לְעָרֵ֪י (to the cities) יְהוּדָ֟ה (of Judah), וְקִבְצוּ֩ (and gather) מִכָּל־ (from all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל (Israel) כֶּ֜סֶף (silver) לְחַזֵּ֣ק׀ (to repair) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֣ית (the house) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֗ם (of your⁺ God) מִדֵּ֤י (sufficiently) שָׁנָה֙ (year) בְּשָׁנָ֔ה (by year), וְאַתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺) תְּמַהֲר֣וּ (hurry) לַדָּבָ֑ר (to the matter).

וְלֹ֥א (Not) מִֽהֲר֖וּ (hurried) הַֽלְוִיִּֽם׃ (the Levites). 6  וַיִּקְרָ֣א (And called) הַמֶּלֶךְ֮ (the king) לִֽיהוֹיָדָ֣ע (Jehoiada) הָרֹאשׁ֒ (the chief) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) ל֗וֹ (to him), מַדּ֙וּעַ֙ (Why) לֹֽא־ (not) דָרַ֣שְׁתָּ (have you required) עַל־ (of) הַלְוִיִּ֔ם (the Levites) לְהָבִ֞יא (to bring in) מִֽיהוּדָ֣ה (from Judah) וּמִֽירוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (and from) אֶת־ (Jerusalem) מַשְׂאַת֙ (the tribute) מֹשֶׁ֣ה (of Moses) עֶֽבֶד־ (the servant) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) וְהַקָּהָ֖ל (and of the assembly) לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel) לְאֹ֖הֶל (for the Tent) הָעֵדֽוּת׃ (of the Testimony)?

7  כִּ֤י (For) עֲתַלְיָ֙הוּ֙ (of Athaliah) הַמִּרְשַׁ֔עַת (the wicked one) בָּנֶ֥יהָ (the sons) פָרְצ֖וּ (had broken into) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֣ית (the house) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God), וְגַם֙ (and also) כָּל־ (all) קָדְשֵׁ֣י (the holy things) בֵית־ (of the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) עָשׂ֖וּ (they had presented) לַבְּעָלִֽים׃ (to the Baals).

8  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And spoke) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (the king) וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֖וּ (and they made) אֲר֣וֹן (chest) אֶחָ֑ד (one) וַֽיִּתְּנֻ֛הוּ (and set it) בְּשַׁ֥עַר (at the gate) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) חֽוּצָה׃ (outside). 9  וַיִּתְּנוּ־ (And they made) ק֞וֹל (a proclamation) בִּֽיהוּדָ֣ה (throughout Judah) וּבִֽירוּשָׁלִַ֗ם (and Jerusalem) לְהָבִ֤יא (to bring) לַֽיהוָה֙ (to YHWH) מַשְׂאַ֞ת (the tribute) מֹשֶׁ֧ה (of Moses) עֶֽבֶד־ (the servant) הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים (of God) עַל־ (upon) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (in the wilderness). 10  וַיִּשְׂמְח֥וּ (And rejoiced) כָל־ (all) הַשָּׂרִ֖ים (the leaders) וְכָל־ (and all) הָעָ֑ם (the people) וַיָּבִ֛יאוּ (and they brought them in) וַיַּשְׁלִ֥יכוּ (and put them) לָאָר֖וֹן (into the chest), עַד־ (until) לְכַלֵּֽה׃ (it was filled).

11  וַיְהִ֡י (And it came to pass), בְּעֵת֩ (at that time when) יָבִ֨יא (was brought in) אֶת־ (-) הָֽאָר֜וֹן (the chest) אֶל־ (to) פְּקֻדַּ֣ת (official) הַמֶּלֶךְ֮ (of the king) בְּיַ֣ד (by the hand) הַלְוִיִּם֒ (of the Levites) וְכִרְאוֹתָ֞ם (and they saw) כִּי־ (that there was) רַ֣ב (much) הַכֶּ֗סֶף (silver), וּבָ֨א (that came) סוֹפֵ֤ר (a scribe) הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ (of the king) וּפְקִיד֙ (and an officer) כֹּהֵ֣ן (of priest) הָרֹ֔אשׁ (the high), וִיעָ֙רוּ֙ (and emptied) אֶת־ (-) הָ֣אָר֔וֹן (the chest), וְיִשָּׂאֻ֖הוּ (and they took it) וִֽישִׁיבֻ֣הוּ (and returned it) אֶל־ (to) מְקֹמ֑וֹ (its place). כֹּ֤ה (Thus) עָשׂוּ֙ (they did) לְי֣וֹם׀ (day) בְּי֔וֹם (by day) וַיַּֽאַסְפוּ־ (and they gathered) כֶ֖סֶף (silver) לָרֹֽב׃ (in abundance). 12  וַיִּתְּנֵ֨הוּ (And gave it) הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ (the king) וִֽיהוֹיָדָ֗ע (and Jehoiada) אֶל־ (to) עוֹשֵׂה֙ (those doing) מְלֶ֙אכֶת֙ (the work) עֲבוֹדַ֣ת (of the service) בֵּית־ (of the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), וַיִּֽהְי֤וּ (and) שֹׂכְרִים֙ (they hired) חֹצְבִ֣ים (hewers) וְחָרָשִׁ֔ים (and craftsmen) לְחַדֵּ֖שׁ (to renew) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וְ֠גַם (and also) לְחָרָשֵׁ֤י (craftsmen) בַרְזֶל֙ (in iron) וּנְחֹ֔שֶׁת (and bronze) לְחַזֵּ֖ק (to strengthen) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֥ית (the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

13  וַֽיַּעֲשׂוּ֙ (And those working) עֹשֵׂ֣י (labored) הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה (in the work), וַתַּ֧עַל (and went up) אֲרוּכָ֛ה (the restoration) לַמְּלָאכָ֖ה (of the work) בְּיָדָ֑ם (by their hand) וַֽיַּעֲמִ֜ידוּ (and they made stand) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֧ית (the house) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֛ים (of God) עַל־ (according to) מַתְכֻּנְתּ֖וֹ (its measurement), וַֽיְאַמְּצֻֽהוּ׃ (and they strengthened it). 14  וּֽכְכַלּוֹתָ֡ם (And at their completing it) הֵבִ֣יאוּ (they brought) לִפְנֵי֩ (before) הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ (the king) וִֽיהוֹיָדָ֜ע (and Jehoiada) אֶת־ (-) שְׁאָ֣ר (the rest) הַכֶּ֗סֶף (of the silver), וַיַּעֲשֵׂ֨הוּ (and they made from it) כֵלִ֤ים (articles) לְבֵית־ (for the house) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH), כְּלֵ֣י (articles) שָׁרֵ֔ת (of serving) וְהַעֲל֣וֹת (and of offering up), וְכַפּ֔וֹת (and dishes), וּכְלֵ֥י (and vessels) זָהָ֖ב (of gold) וָכָ֑סֶף (and silver).

וַ֠יִּֽהְיוּ (And they) מַעֲלִ֨ים (offered) עֹל֤וֹת (burnt offerings) בְּבֵית־ (in the house) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) תָּמִ֔יד (continually) כֹּ֖ל (all) יְמֵ֥י (the days) יְהוֹיָדָֽע׃פ (of Jehoiada).

Jehoiada’s Death and Burial

15  וַיִּזְקַ֧ן (And grew old) יְהוֹיָדָ֛ע (Jehoiada) וַיִּשְׂבַּ֥ע (and was full) יָמִ֖ים (of days), וַיָּמֹ֑ת (and he died) בֶּן־ (a son) מֵאָ֧ה (of a hundred) וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֛ים (and thirty) שָׁנָ֖ה (years) בְּמוֹתֽוֹ׃ (in his death).

16  וַיִּקְבְּרֻ֥הוּ (And they buried him) בְעִיר־ (in the City) דָּוִ֖יד (of David) עִם־ (among) הַמְּלָכִ֑ים (the kings), כִּֽי־ (because) עָשָׂ֤ה (he had done) טוֹבָה֙ (good) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (in Israel), וְעִ֥ם (and with) הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים (God) וּבֵיתֽוֹ׃ס (and His house).

The Wickedness of Joash

17  וְאַֽחֲרֵ֥י (And after) מוֹת֙ (the death) יְה֣וֹיָדָ֔ע (of Jehoiada) בָּ֚אוּ (came) שָׂרֵ֣י (the leaders) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֖וּ (and bowed down) לַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (to the king). אָ֛ז (Then) שָׁמַ֥ע (listened) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king) אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (to them). 18  וַיַּֽעַזְב֗וּ (And they forsook) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֤ית (the house) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֔ם (of their fathers), וַיַּֽעַבְד֥וּ (and they served) אֶת־ (-) הָאֲשֵׁרִ֖ים (the Asherim) וְאֶת־ (and) הָֽעֲצַבִּ֑ים (the idols). וַֽיְהִי־ (And came) קֶ֗צֶף (wrath) עַל־ (upon) יְהוּדָה֙ (Judah) וִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (and Jerusalem) בְּאַשְׁמָתָ֖ם (on account of their guilt) זֹֽאת׃ (this). 19  וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח (And He sent) בָּהֶם֙ (to them) נְבִאִ֔ים (prophets) לַהֲשִׁיבָ֖ם (to bring them back) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH). וַיָּעִ֥ידוּ (And they testified) בָ֖ם (against them), וְלֹ֥א (not) הֶאֱזִֽינוּ׃ס (they would give an ear).

20  וְר֣וּחַ (And the Spirit) אֱלֹהִ֗ים (of God) לָֽבְשָׁה֙ (came upon) אֶת־ (-) זְכַרְיָה֙ (Zechariah) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹיָדָ֣ע (of Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖ד (and he stood) מֵעַ֣ל (over against) לָעָ֑ם (the people), וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (and he said) לָהֶ֜ם (to them), כֹּ֣ה׀ (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים (God), לָמָה֩ (Why) אַתֶּ֨ם (you⁺) עֹבְרִ֜ים (do transgress) אֶת־ (-) מִצְוֺ֤ת (the commandments) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH), וְלֹ֣א (so that not) תַצְלִ֔יחוּ (you⁺ prosper)? כִּֽי־ (Because) עֲזַבְתֶּ֥ם (you⁺ have forsaken) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), וַיַּֽעֲזֹ֥ב (and He has forsaken) אֶתְכֶֽם׃ (you⁺).

21  וַיִּקְשְׁר֣וּ (And they conspired) עָלָ֔יו (against him) וַיִּרְגְּמֻ֥הוּ (and stoned him) אֶ֖בֶן (with stones) בְּמִצְוַ֣ת (at the command) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (of the king) בַּחֲצַ֖ר (in the court) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

22  וְלֹא־ (And not) זָכַ֞ר (did remember) יוֹאָ֣שׁ (Joash) הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ (the king) הַחֶ֙סֶד֙ (the kindness) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) עָשָׂ֜ה (had done) יְהוֹיָדָ֤ע (Jehoiada) אָבִיו֙ (his father) עִמּ֔וֹ (to him), וַֽיַּהֲרֹ֖ג (and he killed) אֶת־ (-) בְּנ֑וֹ (his son). וּכְמוֹת֣וֹ (And as he died), אָמַ֔ר (he said), יֵ֥רֶא (Look on this) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), וְיִדְרֹֽשׁ׃פ (and require it).

The Death of Joash
(2 Kings 12:17–21)

23  וַיְהִ֣י׀ (And it came to pass) לִתְקוּפַ֣ת (at the coming around) הַשָּׁנָ֗ה (of the year) עָלָ֣ה (that came up) עָלָיו֮ (against him) חֵ֣יל (the army) אֲרָם֒ (of Aram), וַיָּבֹ֗אוּ (and they came) אֶל־ (to) יְהוּדָה֙ (Judah) וִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (and Jerusalem) וַיַּשְׁחִ֛יתוּ (and they destroyed) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) שָׂרֵ֥י (the leaders) הָעָ֖ם (of the people) מֵעָ֑ם (from among the people), וְכָל־ (and all) שְׁלָלָ֥ם (the plunder) שִׁלְּח֖וּ (they sent) לְמֶ֥לֶךְ (to the king) דַּרְמָֽשֶׂק׃ (of Damascus). 24  כִּי֩ (For) בְמִצְעַ֨ר (with a small company) אֲנָשִׁ֜ים (of men) בָּ֣אוּ׀ (came) חֵ֣יל (the army) אֲרָ֗ם (of Aram), וַֽיהוָה֙ (and YHWH) נָתַ֨ן (delivered) בְּיָדָ֥ם (into their hands) חַ֙יִל֙ (a force) לָרֹ֣ב (great) מְאֹ֔ד (exceedingly), כִּ֣י (because) עָֽזְב֔וּ (they had forsaken) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם (of their fathers). וְאֶת־ (And against) יוֹאָ֖שׁ (Joash) עָשׂ֥וּ (they executed) שְׁפָטִֽים׃ (judgment).

25  וּבְלֶכְתָּ֣ם (And in their going) מִמֶּ֗נּוּ (from him)— כִּֽי־ (for) עָזְב֣וּ (they left) אֹתוֹ֮ (him) בְּמַחֲלִיִּים (wounded)— רַבִּים֒ (severely) הִתְקַשְּׁר֨וּ (conspired) עָלָ֜יו (against him) עֲבָדָ֗יו (his own servants) בִּדְמֵי֙ (on account of the blood) בְּנֵי֙ (of the sons) יְהוֹיָדָ֣ע (of Jehoiada) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest), וַיַּֽהַרְגֻ֥הוּ (and they killed him) עַל־ (on) מִטָּת֖וֹ (his bed), וַיָּמֹ֑ת (and he died), וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֙הוּ֙ (and they buried him) בְּעִ֣יר (in the City) דָּוִ֔יד (of David), וְלֹ֥א (not) קְבָרֻ֖הוּ (they did bury him) בְּקִבְר֥וֹת (in the tombs) הַמְּלָכִֽים׃ס (of the kings). 26  וְאֵ֖לֶּה (And these) הַמִּתְקַשְּׁרִ֣ים (are those conspiring) עָלָ֑יו (against him): זָבָ֗ד (ZAbad) בֶּן־ (son) שִׁמְעָת֙ (of Shimeath) הָֽעַמּוֹנִ֔ית (the Ammonitess) וִיה֣וֹזָבָ֔ד (and Jehozabad) בֶּן־ (son) שִׁמְרִ֖ית (of Shimrith) הַמּוֹאָבִֽית׃ (the Moabitess).

27  וּבָנָ֞יו (And his sons) וְרֹב (and the many) הַמַּשָּׂ֣א (oracles) עָלָ֗יו (about him) וִיסוֹד֙ (and the repairing) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God), הִנָּ֣ם (indeed they) כְּתוּבִ֔ים (are written) עַל־ (in) מִדְרַ֖שׁ (the Treatise) סֵ֣פֶר (of the Book) הַמְּלָכִ֑ים (of the Kings). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) אֲמַצְיָ֥הוּ (Amaziah) בְנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).
