Elijah Denounces Ahaziah
(1 Kings 22:51–53)

1  וַיִּפְשַׁ֤ע (And rebelled) מוֹאָב֙ (Moab) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (against Israel) אַחֲרֵ֖י (after) מ֥וֹת (the death) אַחְאָֽב׃ (of Ahab).

2  וַיִּפֹּ֨ל (And fell) אֲחַזְיָ֜ה (Ahaziah) בְּעַ֣ד (through) הַשְּׂבָכָ֗ה (the lattice) בַּעֲלִיָּת֛וֹ (of his upper room) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that was) בְּשֹׁמְר֖וֹן (in Samaria), וַיָּ֑חַל (and he was injured). וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח (And he sent) מַלְאָכִ֔ים (messengers) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (and said) אֲלֵהֶם֙ (to them), לְכ֣וּ (Go), דִרְשׁ֗וּ (inquire) בְּבַ֤עַל (of Baal-) זְבוּב֙ (zebub) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the god) עֶקְר֔וֹן (of Ekron) אִם־ (whether) אֶחְיֶ֖ה (I will live) מֵחֳלִ֥י (from injury) זֶֽה׃ס (this).

3  וּמַלְאַ֣ךְ (And the angel) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) דִּבֶּר֙ (said) אֶל־ (to) אֵלִיָּ֣ה (Elijah) הַתִּשְׁבִּ֔י (the Tishbite), ק֣וּם (Arise), עֲלֵ֔ה (go up) לִקְרַ֖את (to meet) מַלְאֲכֵ֣י (the messengers) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (of the king) שֹׁמְר֑וֹן (of Samaria), וְדַבֵּ֣ר (and say) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them), הַֽמִבְּלִ֤י (Because) אֵין־ (there is no) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (in Israel), אַתֶּם֙ (you⁺) הֹֽלְכִ֔ים (are going) לִדְרֹ֕שׁ (to inquire) בְּבַ֥עַל (of Baal-) זְב֖וּב (zebub) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the god) עֶקְרֽוֹן׃ (of Ekron)? 4  וְלָכֵן֙ (And now) כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), הַמִּטָּ֞ה (The bed) אֲשֶׁר־ (to which) עָלִ֥יתָ (you have gone up) שָּׁ֛ם (there), לֹֽא־ (not) תֵרֵ֥ד (you shall come down) מִמֶּ֖נָּה (from it). כִּ֣י (For) מ֣וֹת (dying) תָּמ֑וּת (you will die).

וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ (And departed) אֵלִיָּֽה׃ (Elijah).

5  וַיָּשׁ֥וּבוּ (And returned) הַמַּלְאָכִ֖ים (the messengers) אֵלָ֑יו (to him), וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (and he said) אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (to them), מַה־ (What) זֶּ֥ה (is this)— שַׁבְתֶּֽם׃ (you⁺ have returned)!

6  וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ (And they said) אֵלָ֜יו (to him), אִ֣ישׁ׀ (A man) עָלָ֣ה (came up) לִקְרָאתֵ֗נוּ (to meet us) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and said) אֵלֵינוּ֮ (to us) לְכ֣וּ (Go), שׁוּבוּ֮ (return) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ (the king) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) שָׁלַ֣ח (sent) אֶתְכֶם֒ (you⁺), וְדִבַּרְתֶּ֣ם (and say) אֵלָ֗יו (to him) כֹּ֚ה (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH): הַֽמִבְּלִ֤י (Because) אֵין־ (there is no) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (in Israel), אַתָּ֣ה (you) שֹׁלֵ֔חַ (are sending) לִדְרֹ֕שׁ (to inquire) בְּבַ֥עַל (of Baal-) זְב֖וּב (zebub) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the god) עֶקְר֑וֹן (of Ekron)? לָ֠כֵן (Therefore) הַמִּטָּ֞ה (the bed) אֲשֶׁר־ (to which) עָלִ֥יתָ (you have gone up) שָּׁ֛ם (there), לֹֽא־ (not) תֵרֵ֥ד (you shall come down) מִמֶּ֖נָּה (from it). כִּֽי־ (For) מ֥וֹת (dying) תָּמֽוּת׃ (you will die).

7  וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (And he said) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them), מֶ֚ה (What) מִשְׁפַּ֣ט (was the manner) הָאִ֔ישׁ (of the man) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) עָלָ֖ה (came up) לִקְרַאתְכֶ֑ם (to meet you⁺) וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (and told) אֲלֵיכֶ֔ם (to you⁺) אֶת־ (-) הַדְּבָרִ֖ים (the words) הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ (these)?

8  וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (And they answered) אֵלָ֗יו (to him), אִ֚ישׁ (A man) בַּ֣עַל (owner) שֵׂעָ֔ר (hairy) וְאֵז֥וֹר (and a belt) ע֖וֹר (leather) אָז֣וּר (wearing) בְּמָתְנָ֑יו (around his waist).

וַיֹּאמַ֕ר (And he said), אֵלִיָּ֥ה (Elijah) הַתִּשְׁבִּ֖י (the Tishbite) הֽוּא׃ (it is).

9  וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח (And the king sent) אֵלָ֛יו (to him) שַׂר־ (a captain) חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים (of fifty) וַחֲמִשָּׁ֑יו (and his fifty). וַיַּ֣עַל (And he went up) אֵלָ֗יו (to him), וְהִנֵּה֙ (and there) יֹשֵׁב֙ (he was sitting) עַל־ (on) רֹ֣אשׁ (the top) הָהָ֔ר (of the hill). וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (And he said) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), אִ֚ישׁ (Man) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God), הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ (the king) דִּבֶּ֖ר (has said): רֵֽדָה׃ (Come down).

10  וַיַּעֲנֶ֣ה (And answered) אֵלִיָּ֗הוּ (Elijah) וַיְדַבֵּר֮ (and said) אֶל־ (to) שַׂ֣ר (the captain) הַחֲמִשִּׁים֒ (of the fifty), וְאִם־ (And if) אִ֤ישׁ (a man) אֱלֹהִים֙ (of God) אָ֔נִי (I am), תֵּ֤רֶד (let come down) אֵשׁ֙ (fire) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (the heavens) וְתֹאכַ֥ל (and consume) אֹתְךָ֖ (you), וְאֶת־ (and) חֲמִשֶּׁ֑יךָ (your fifty).

וַתֵּ֤רֶד (And came down) אֵשׁ֙ (fire) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (the heavens) וַתֹּ֥אכַל (and consumed) אֹת֖וֹ (him) וְאֶת־ (and) חֲמִשָּֽׁיו׃ (his fifty).

11  וַיָּ֜שָׁב (And he turned) וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח (and sent) אֵלָ֛יו (to him) שַׂר־ (the captain) חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים (of fifty) אַחֵ֖ר (another) וַחֲמִשָּׁ֑יו (and his fifty). וַיַּ֙עַן֙ (And he answered) וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (and said) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), אִ֚ישׁ (Man) הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God), כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַ֥ר (has said) הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ (the king): מְהֵרָ֥ה (Quickly) רֵֽדָה׃ (come down).

12  וַיַּ֣עַן (And answered) אֵלִיָּה֮ (Elijah) וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (and said) אֲלֵיהֶם֒ (to them), אִם־ (If) אִ֤ישׁ (a man) הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ (of God) אָ֔נִי (I am), תֵּ֤רֶד (let come down) אֵשׁ֙ (fire) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (the heavens) וְתֹאכַ֥ל (and consume) אֹתְךָ֖ (you) וְאֶת־ (and) חֲמִשֶּׁ֑יךָ (and your fifty).

וַתֵּ֤רֶד (And came down) אֵשׁ־ (the fire) אֱלֹהִים֙ (of God) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (the heavens) וַתֹּ֥אכַל (and consumed) אֹת֖וֹ (him) וְאֶת־ (and) חֲמִשָּֽׁיו׃ (his fifty).

13  וַיָּ֗שָׁב (And he turned) וַיִּשְׁלַ֛ח (and sent) שַׂר־ (a captain) חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים (of fifty) שְׁלִשִׁ֖ים (a third) וַחֲמִשָּׁ֑יו (and his fifty). וַיַּ֡עַל (And went up) וַיָּבֹא֩ (and he came) שַׂר־ (the captain) הַחֲמִשִּׁ֨ים (of the fifty) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֜י (third), וַיִּכְרַ֥ע (and fell) עַל־ (on) בִּרְכָּ֣יו׀ (his knees) לְנֶ֣גֶד (before) אֵלִיָּ֗הוּ (Elijah), וַיִּתְחַנֵּ֤ן (and he pleaded) אֵלָיו֙ (with him) וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר (and said) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), אִ֚ישׁ (Man) הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים (of God), תִּֽיקַר־ (let be precious) נָ֣א (please) נַפְשִׁ֗י (my life) וְנֶ֨פֶשׁ (and the life) עֲבָדֶ֥יךָֽ (of your servants)— אֵ֛לֶּה (these) חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים (fifty)— בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ (in your eyes). 14  הִ֠נֵּה (Behold), יָ֤רְדָה (has come down) אֵשׁ֙ (fire) מִן־ (from) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (the heavens) וַ֠תֹּאכַל (and burned up) אֶת־ (-) שְׁנֵ֞י (two) שָׂרֵ֧י (the captains) הַחֲמִשִּׁ֛ים (of the fifty) הָרִאשֹׁנִ֖ים (first) וְאֶת־ (and) חֲמִשֵּׁיהֶ֑ם (and their fifties). וְעַתָּ֕ה (And) תִּיקַ֥ר (let be precious) נַפְשִׁ֖י (my life) בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ס (in your eyes).

15  וַיְדַבֵּ֞ר (And said) מַלְאַ֤ךְ (the angel) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֶל־ (to) אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ (Elijah), רֵ֣ד (Go down) אוֹת֔וֹ (with him); אַל־ (not) תִּירָ֖א (do be afraid) מִפָּנָ֑יו (of him).

וַיָּ֛קָם (And he arose) וַיֵּ֥רֶד (and went down) אוֹת֖וֹ (with him) אֶל־ (to) הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ (the king).

16  וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר (And he said) אֵלָ֜יו (to him), כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) יַ֜עַן (because) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) שָׁלַ֣חְתָּ (you have sent) מַלְאָכִים֮ (messengers) לִדְרֹשׁ֮ (to inquire) בְּבַ֣עַל (of Baal-) זְבוּב֮ (zebub) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the god) עֶקְרוֹן֒ (of Ekron): הַֽמִבְּלִ֤י (Is it because) אֵין־ (there is no) אֱלֹהִים֙ (God) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (in Israel) לִדְרֹ֖שׁ (to inquire) בִּדְבָר֑וֹ (of His word)? לָ֠כֵן (Therefore) הַמִּטָּ֞ה (the bed) אֲשֶׁר־ (to which) עָלִ֥יתָ (you have gone up) שָּׁ֛ם (there), לֹֽא־ (not) תֵרֵ֥ד (you shall come down) מִמֶּ֖נָּה (from it). כִּֽי־ (For) מ֥וֹת (dying) תָּמֽוּת׃ (you will die).

Jehoram Succeeds Ahaziah

17  וַיָּ֜מָת (And he died) כִּדְבַ֥ר (according to the word) יְהוָ֣ה׀ (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) דִּבֶּ֣ר (had spoken) אֵלִיָּ֗הוּ (Elijah). וַיִּמְלֹ֤ךְ (And became king) יְהוֹרָם֙ (Jehoram) תַּחְתָּ֔יו פ (in his place) בִּשְׁנַ֣ת (in the year) שְׁתַּ֔יִם (second) לִיהוֹרָ֥ם (of Joram) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹשָׁפָ֖ט (of Jehoshaphat) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), כִּ֛י (because) לֹֽא־ (no) הָ֥יָה (had) ל֖וֹ (he) בֵּֽן׃ (son).

18  וְיֶ֛תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the acts) אֲחַזְיָ֖הוּ (of Ahaziah) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֑ה (he did), הֲלֽוֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣מָּה (they) כְתוּבִ֗ים (are written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (of Israel)?
